Bowie did sing backup on the song -- just listen to the backing vocals on the chorus, which couldn't be mistaken as belonging to anybody other than Bowie -- but he didn't play instruments on the song. The band themselves played the instruments: lead vocalist Ian Hunter on piano, Mick Ralphs on guitar, Verden Allen on organ, Overend Watts on bass, and Buffin on drums.
Though written by Bowie, Ian Hunter brought his own delivery and personality and seems all the improv vocals at the end. Ian Hunter (and Mott) is a legend in the UK in his own right.

You hear Bowie in this piece the same as you hear McCartney in Peter & Gordon or Bad Finger, and Dylan in The Byrds or CSN&Y, and and and. The guys who can write - and understand they can't carry the whole pop music world on their own shoulders - generally do a lot of development work with other artists. Cross pollination is kind of an important thing.
Bowie gave the band a choice. They could have this song or “Suffragette City” They chose this one and Bowie kept Suffragette and had a good sized hit with that one. Worked out for everyone involved.

So rather than be insulted Bowie wrote All The Young Dudes which did what it was supposed to do… give Mott a hit single and revived their career. And The other song Mott passed on? Bowie recorded it himself and had a hit record with that one too… Suffragette City. Bowie also recorded All The Young Dudes and sang it in concert right up until his last tour.

They’re actually singing “Man, I need a tv, when I got T.Rex” because that was the only way back in the day to see Marc Bolan doing his thing on pop programmes such as ‘Top Of The Pops’ - so it’s an affirmation for having a television to see them, not that he doesn’t need one, because he can listen to their music instead - he needs to see Bolan in all of his Glam splendour! 😉
Absolutely! His Ian Hunter solo album is in my top 5 list and I have listened to it thousands of times. It’s also a great album to blast out when driving!

After Mott the Hoople broke up, Ian Hunter went solo and recruited former Bowie/Spiders from Mars guitarist, Mick Ronson. Together they created some great, incredible rockers. Ian Hunter's music is criminally underrated.
As is Mick Ronson on guitar, he and Ian had a nice collaboration going for awhile. To see Mick at his ripping best, See Bowie's concert with the Spiders from Mars on the Ziggy Stardust tour, search for Moonage Daydream and Width of a Circle, Mick if off the chain on both tunes, gives me goose bumps still. I met Ian Hunter in the elevator of Daddy’s apartment building in 1975-76 while visiting in Milwaukee. The local promoter lived a few floors up. Daddy was frightened that I “knew” such an “unsavory character” at 17 years but Ian was charmed by Daddy’s little girl… 🤣the promoter razzed my dad about for at least a year.
You can see this performed live at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley on 20th April 1992. Remaining Queen members, Ian Hunter, Bowie, the brilliant Mick Ronson, Joe Elliot and Phill Colins. Great performance.

There was not enough time and money to see all the great bands of the era. Stunning stuff in retrospect. I managed to get a gig working concert security in the late 70s early 80s locally. Got Paid to see some great, great bands!

I have loved Mott The Hoople since 1972. They were so different. Then I got to see them live in 1973 when they opened for Robin Trower. They were just great. Both MTH & Robin Trower had to kill it cause Aerosmith opened the night. I had never heard of them and they were so good. All three were great. Mott Th Hoople is a visual experience as well. Bass player Overend Watts wore huge platform shoes with tight pants. Ariel Bender who joined in 74 also on lead guitar was a favorite and had a look of his own. Of course Ian Hunter on guitar and vocals big hair and big shades on. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Queen opened for Mott on their (Queen’s) first American tour -74. One of the best concerts i ever saw. Mott’s “I’m a Cadillac / El Camino Dolo Roso” segues beautifully into “I Wish I Was Your Mother” on the album. It would be way cool if you could do that on your show. “Mott” 1973 is solid gold.
My first concert in 1973 was Queen opening for Mott The Hoople @ King Georges Hall, Blackburn UK. Always remember Freddie Mercury looked so thin wearing a black & white skin tight leotard.

Ian Hunter was the lead singer. The Ian Hunter band had great hits. “Just Another Night” “ Where Do We Go From Here” “Cleveland Rocks”. But “Irene Wilde” Is a great triumphant ballad for all budding Musicians. Try it.
4:55 the 2000s huh? See to me this song has always sounded like a collaboration between Bowie and the Beatles. The chorus is especially very Beatlesesque to me, and the verses are very much in line with a lot of Bowie's other work. Which is probably why I love it so much. Getting Bowie and the Beatles at the same time from one song is pretty sweet lol.
Check out Mott the Hoople's Ready For Love that was the original recording. It was written by their guitarist who later played that instrument for Bad Company and brought his song with him. It became an early hit for them.

The backing vocals also featured Mick Ralphs, Buffin (Dale Griffin) and Stan Tippins. All could reach high notes on harmonies which is why it sounds so rich alongside Bowie

Mott was around long before they had a hit with this song. Saw them tour for this album in Chicago. Opening act was Aerosmith, followed by the New York Dolls. Mott put out some kick ass rockers as well
@@aerynsunx All of it! We drove from Des Moines for the show and we were a bit shocked by the open sale and use of all kinds of drugs in the giant men’s room. In the middle of Aerosmith’s set, a small riot broke out in the middle of the auditorium! It was wild. We also weren’t prepared for the large number of cross dressers that showed up for the New York Dolls. Still, all 3 bands kicked ass, and Mott was truly the superior and rightful headline act. They had a big group of fans at the school I attended
The singer of Mott the Hoople. Ian Hunter, released a fantastic pure Rock n Roll solo album in 1981, called "Short Back 'n' Sides". The big hit single was "Central Park 'n' West" which is great. Also fun - and weird - is "Lisa Loves Rock 'n' Roll".

Bowie wrote the song for Mott the Hoople, which was a group he admired and which were on the verge of breaking up. He hoped to provide them with a hit to garner some momentum, and then Bowie would go on to record his own version a year or two later, which was also a hit.
This would play at every party in the 70s and everyone joined in it became a must at all music playing events. I miss those great times and im sad that this Generation will never experiance such great times.
They played the heck out of this song back in the day....for good reason. It was totally different from anything out then or before then. The only solo is in the intro. It's still revolutionary.
The patter at the end, where the lead singer is talking over the outro saying things like, "You, in the glasses" and all that came about when Bowie said the outro without some kind of patter felt repetitive and like it was leaving too much space. The night before, the band had played a song in a club in LA and there was a heckler at the back, so the singer had taunted the heckler's friends into bringing the heckler down to the front row, whereupon the singer poured a beer on the heckler's head. His patter at the end of the song is just him reciting what he told the heckler during that episode.
I hadn't known that. In my mind it was the singer trying to pick up someone in the audience. A guy, actually, because of the line "I wanted to do this for years."

Ian Hunter sings the lead, and you can hear Bowie doing background vocals in the chorus. There's a great live version of this, it was a big hit. Also, the guitar player in this band Mick Ralphs, went on to form the band, Bad Company, with Paul Rogers on vocals.

Saw Mott a few times. 1st time Queen was the opening act. Loved them. Mick Ralph's went on to form Bad Company. Bowie gave that song to Mott. Golden Age of Rock n Roll you might like. So many!

This might be a good spot to mention another hypnotic piece from that era (released 1972), "The Four Horsemen" by Aphrodite's Child. The only thing close to a hit from their progressive rock masterpiece "666" double lp, the cut has another hypnotic and catchy ground for the soloist to soar over. One of my all time favorite guitar solos is the reason you want this on your list though.

It is true, I was alive back then and as Mott The Hoople were a band from Hereford, I remember reading about them in the local papers.
He first offered them Suffragette City and they said no, we want Dudes instead.

I saw Ian Hunter open for J Geils about four years ago. He and his band sounded great, especially when they played this.

I met Ian Hunter in the elevator of Daddy’s apartment building in 1975-76 while visiting in Milwaukee. The local promoter lived a few floors up. Daddy was frightened that I “knew” such an “unsavory character” at 17 years but Ian was charmed by Daddy’s little girl… 🤣the promoter razzed my dad about for at least a year.

There was not enough time and money to see all the great bands of the era. Stunning stuff in retrospect. I managed to get a gig working concert security in the late 70s early 80s locally. Got Paid to see some great, great bands!

Friggin' great song! Almost an anthem of our youth.
I have loved Mott The Hoople since 1972. They were so different. Then I got to see them live in 1973 when they opened for Robin Trower. They were just great. Both MTH & Robin Trower had to kill it cause Aerosmith opened the night. I had never heard of them and they were so good. All three were great. Mott Th Hoople is a visual experience as well. Bass player Overend Watts wore huge platform shoes with tight pants. Ariel Bender who joined in 74 also on lead guitar was a favorite and had a look of his own. Of course Ian Hunter on guitar and vocals big hair and big shades on. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I saw them at the Palladium in Hollywood, on second bill for Leslie West and Mountain. it was an amazing show

Queen opened for Mott on their (Queen’s) first American tour -74. One of the best concerts i ever saw. Mott’s “I’m a Cadillac / El Camino Dolo Roso” segues beautifully into “I Wish I Was Your Mother” on the album. It would be way cool if you could do that on your show. “Mott” 1973 is solid gold.
My first concert in 1973 was Queen opening for Mott The Hoople @ King Georges Hall, Blackburn UK.

YES!! Glad someone recognised their early stuff. RnR Queen, written by the talented Mick Ralphs for their debut album. Stones (allegedly) ripped it off for 'Bitch' on their Sticky Fingers album a few years later!
Ian Hunter was the lead singer. The Ian Hunter band had great hits. “Just Another Night” “ Where Do We Go From Here” “Cleveland Rocks”. But “Irene Wilde” Is a great triumphant ballad for all budding Musicians. Try it.

4:55 the 2000s huh? See to me this song has always sounded like a collaboration between Bowie and the Beatles. The chorus is especially very Beatlesesque to me, and the verses are very much in line with a lot of Bowie's other work. Which is probably why I love it so much. Getting Bowie and the Beatles at the same time from one song is pretty sweet lol.

Check out Mott the Hoople's Ready For Love that was the original recording. It was written by their guitarist who later played that instrument for Bad Company and brought his song with him. It became an early hit for them.

As a teen in the 70s the poetic lyric, "is that concrete all around or in my head", was a great metaphor of angst.
The stealing clothes from Marks and Sparks line makes me smile as you won’t know, I guess, that it refers to Marks and Spencer’s. A UK high st chain of shops.
Marks & Spencer also have really great foods, the cakes are excellent.

Bowie’s fingerprints are unmistakable. And Ian Hunter really sets the bar high for other frontmen. He may not have been the original frontman, but he definitely reinvented the role in such a way that many have imitated him since. Next, please make this Memphis girl happy and react to “All the Way from Memphis.”

I'm sure someone's already said this, but not only did Bowie produce it, write it, he also does those incredible backing vocals.
The backing vocals also featured Mick Ralphs, Buffin (Dale Griffin) and Stan Tippins. All could reach high notes on harmonies which is why it sounds so rich alongside Bowie

This helps underscore the variety of music back then. It was literally all over the place so we never got bored …until disco that is.

@@aerynsunx All of it! We drove from Des Moines for the show and we were a bit shocked by the open sale and use of all kinds of drugs in the giant men’s room. In the middle of Aerosmith’s set, a small riot broke out in the middle of the auditorium! It was wild. We also weren’t prepared for the large number of cross dressers that showed up for the New York Dolls. Still, all 3 bands kicked ass, and Mott was truly the superior and rightful headline act. They had a big group of fans at the school I attended

The singer of Mott the Hoople. Ian Hunter, released a fantastic pure Rock n Roll solo album in 1981, called "Short Back 'n' Sides". The big hit single was "Central Park 'n' West" which is great. Also fun - and weird - is "Lisa Loves Rock 'n' Roll".

Bowie wrote the song for Mott the Hoople, which was a group he admired and which were on the verge of breaking up. He hoped to provide them with a hit to garner some momentum, and then Bowie would go on to record his own version a year or two later, which was also a hit.
This would play at every party in the 70s and everyone joined in it became a must at all music playing events. I miss those great times and im sad that this Generation will never experiance such great times.

You simply HAD to be there at 14/15 to appreciate the beauty of this song. Also from Mott...."Roll Away The Stone"......Amazing music.
The patter at the end, where the lead singer is talking over the outro saying things like, "You, in the glasses" and all that came about when Bowie said the outro without some kind of patter felt repetitive and like it was leaving too much space. The night before, the band had played a song in a club in LA and there was a heckler at the back, so the singer had taunted the heckler's friends into bringing the heckler down to the front row, whereupon the singer poured a beer on the heckler's head. His patter at the end of the song is just him reciting what he told the heckler during that episode.
I hadn't known that. In my mind it was the singer trying to pick up someone in the audience. A guy, actually, because of the line "I wanted to do this for years."

If you're ever ready to check out some amazing glam rock pieces with a touch of camp - try Mott's "Marionette" and "Violence. Then check out some early Alice Cooper (when they were a band). Start with "Under My Wheels" maybe.

David Bowie wrote the song and gave it to the band because they were going to break up. I could be wrong, but I believe he produced it for them as well. Ian Hunter sings the lead, and you can hear Bowie doing background vocals in the chorus. There's a great live version of this, it was a big hit. Also, the guitar player in this band Mick Ralphs, went on to form the band, Bad Company, with Paul Rogers on vocals.

As soon as I hear his voice here it brings me back to being a teenager and listening to Mott the hoopla in my friend's room while we smoked under the bed. I'm 66 now so it's good to hear these songs again.
Saw Mott a few times. 1st time Queen was the opening act. Loved them. Mick Ralph's went on to form Bad Company. Bowie gave that song to Mott. Golden Age of Rock n Roll you might like. So many!

Thanks for doing this one, was hoping for you to look at the lyrics though. More glam: Gary Glitter's "Rock & Roll, Part 2"; and watch the film "The Velvet Goldmine." (At least look at the trailer.) More Mott: "All The Way From Memphis"; "Roll Away The Stones." Also check out Ian Hunter's post-Mott solo work: "Cleveland Rocks"; "Just Another Night."
This might be a good spot to mention another hypnotic piece from that era (released 1972), "The Four Horsemen" by Aphrodite's Child. The only thing close to a hit from their progressive rock masterpiece "666" double lp, the cut has another hypnotic and catchy ground for the soloist to soar over. One of my all time favorite guitar solos is the reason you want this on your list though.

Mott the Hoople is arguably one of the most underrated bands of all time. Plenty of "hidden" hits on their LP's.
