So Bowie wrote this song and the reference to the Beatles and the Stones was Bowie's reflection on the mainstream rock music scene on behalf of the alienated fans of the glam rock movement that he basically originated.

Around the time David Bowie wrote this song he was writing some of the best rock and roll tunes of the 20th century. His "The Life and Times of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" album was, for many years, THE R & R album by which all others were measured at my house. Keep up the good work, Biz.

Story goes, Mott the Hoople was about to throw in the towel, when David Bowie gave them this song to record. The rest is history.

David Bowie who wrote the song is talking about his brother when he says "My brothers back at home, with his Beatles and his Stones". His brother was in and out of mental hospitals, and at the time of this song, he was home again and listening to his old music rather then the new stuff.

Beatles had a hit song called "Revolution", but the war was going on and there was a lot of revolutionary talk from the youth as well. Great Bowie song though.

This is one of those songs that, when you listen to them, the lyrics really bring you up short. Fabulous Ian Hunter and the boys. The group’s name is from the 1966 novel by American Willard Manus.

Ahaha, Biz honestly I watch other reactors for the music...I watch you purely for the smart and hilarious commentaries. Pure entertainment. Oh, and I've always loved this song because of the "rapp" vocal style. It was so fresh in it's time.

People did love the Beatles and the Stones but in their day they were the mainstream of British pop so being purely into them would be seen as totally unadventurous.

It's been a while that I have heard this song. I have not heard this group though and I'm relieved to understand now that the lyrics are "carry the news" and not "carry their nudes". Jebus. I always thought those (my ears picking up words) lyrics were a bit off. -Amber

Yes, that re: the Beatles and the Stones singing the revolution stuff. .............Church for the young and restless. Nailed it.
Here's something about Boogaloo. Boogaloo--the word sounds so sus today--was a kind of R&B/Soul/Latin music on the East Coast. But on the West Coast in the 1960s and 1970s there was funky Oakland Boogaloo dancing style going on. If you're interested in that kind of history there's a good article on wikipedia that names all the greats of the genre.
BTW, TH-cams STILL not sending me alerts to your posts. Hopefully no one else is having that problem. 😡

Biz: Since this was off the fifth album, by a band that made 7 great ones, whose live shows were the stuff of legend cuz the audience would get so into it that they'd riot, at one point being banned from the Royal Albert Hall (causing all rock concerts to be banned for years), and they got labeled a straightforward rock and roll band, even though compositionally they went everywhere (!!!), including classical, punk before there was punk, prog, country, and so many soulful anthems, belted out 100 percent emotionally by a guy in shades who shredded his voice in the studio once and their producer demanded he KEEP that performance and not to TOUCH the bad notes, then, Yeah, I want you to do more. Take a deep dive back into their first and second album. Start with Rock And Roll Queen, or Thunderbuck Ram, or the voice shredder take itself, I Can Feel. Thank you, Biz.
