  • In this video we compare and contrast three very successful mixed reef tanks. There are many ways to be successful in this hobby and these three have gone about setting up and maintaining their tanks in very different ways.
    To see more about each tank individually, take a look at some of the earlier videos.

    Love the video. I'm also using the Aquaforest Probiotic method. It has worked very very well for me. I love the flexibility of Aquaforest's products. They make all different types of products for different styles of tanks. With all of the success I've had with the Probiotic line, I'll be converting all of my tanks over to their products.

    Great video and good point about how a different sized tank might not work. I'd also add a different maturity level in your tank also means copying someone's 10 year old reef won't necessarily work if you want to model your brand new tank after it. I've taken different points from different tanks and discussions and through trial and error have found what works good for me. Not the quickest way, but I am happy with the overall quality of my tank and how much maintenance it requires. No point copying someones 50% water changes weekly if you have no means or time to do it 3 months later.

    Amazing in-depth explanation Nathan. Thank you very much for bringing it to us. You pretty much summed up everything that a reefer needs to be successful. I personally like Rico’s tank just because he has achieved great success within a very short span of time and yet without water changes so thts commendable, having said that Nathan’s tank is on the same platform. Will’s tank is new so too early to say anything. I do a mixture of everything from the 3 tanks you show cased...i use Aquaforest A,B,F and E to add micro elements, use Kalkwasser to maintain my CA and Alk, Magnesium is dosed once a month using Randy’s 2 part receipe and SRO skimmer with Cheato in my sump. I also run Carbon and GFO in reactors 24/7....so in all I can say my system is a mixture of all these 3 tanks....lol....thank you for bringing this over..

  • @PhongLe-rl5vg
    @PhongLe-rl5vg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    i think the aqua forest system is a very nice system. I ran my system using Red Sea coral plus but I am gradually adding AF reef salt to my system before adding the probiotics. What i learn from my LFS is that probiotic salt will strip your system of nutrients and all your corals, even sps will suffer and bleach out. so if you decide to go with probiotic salt from AF, slowly add it to your system.

  • @bradsimpson8724
    @bradsimpson8724 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm new to salt, but I never liked the results I got from no water changes or the drip method of automatic water changes. I am a huge believer in 25% twice weekly(I'm just planning my first venture into salt, so the costs of salt mix might change my mind on that). I also seriously LOVE feeding my fish, so it tends to be a heavier, more frequent feeding schedule, and I'm pretty sure that's related to my water change philosophy.
    Anyway, as a soon-to-be reefer with an interest in a mixed LPS/SPS reef tank with plans for a tank similar to these three in volume, I appreciate some more successful reefers to check out and steal ideas from.

    tanks solely lit by T5's look dull and too artificial, not sure why anyone would want a T5 setup considering how advanced LED's are today. Also, there's just too many variables in the equation to assert that corals color up better under T5's vs LED's. I personally have bought corals grown under T5's solely and after having been under a kessil A360 for some time they've colored up so much brighter and more vibrant, in some cases developed a totally different look. Surprising to hear you like the gyre pumps particularly you mention the maintenance on them which I've found to be a major chore compared to something like a vortech, having said that I do like the wide flow area they produce and they do move a lot of water but again I hate taking them apart for cleaning.

    • @Bronx19
      @Bronx19 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LED rave party looks far more fake than T5. LED is advanced in every way unimportant to growing coral. Sunrise, clouds, storms, colour control, all gimmicks.
      Stick a strip of royal blue on your T5 and its over for LED.

    • @Desmo1
      @Desmo1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You sound like you're stuck in 2010, Ecotech and AI do a very good job these days with the dated disco ball effect as well as Kessil...nobody is really talking about that anymore unless you have an older fixture or a cheaper brand with inferior optics/lenses. Also, there's a plethora of videos on here with amazing looking tanks solely grown with LED that also experience great growth rates and awesome color so it's undeniable how effective and fully capable these modern LED fixtures are nowadays.

    • @Bronx19
      @Bronx19 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Na, 2017. XR30 G4. Ryan @ BRS, "Fairly obvious disco ball effect". th-cam.com/video/UA3ZVdPDDH0/w-d-xo.html

    • @Desmo1
      @Desmo1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You clearly didn't watch the whole video, he said to most reefers this shimmer sometimes referred to as disco ball effect will not be noticeable to most reefers but to a few it MAY be noticeable. He also went on to say that T5's aren't natural looking because of the lack of shimmer which the sun naturally provides in reefs. The disco effect is minimal on higher quality LED's but if you wanna be anal about it then stick with the unnatural look of T5's. However, there's no denying that LED's are fully capable of making a tank look outstanding as well as grow coral with great growth rates without the hassle of replacing bulbs or the ugly giant dated fixtures you need to illuminate a large tank. LED's are becoming the standard if not already and that gap will only continue to grow.
