Yes you are right, and in fact, the giant trench in the planet was there only a few years into the empire’s reign, all the first order had to do was outfit it with the tech. That’s how they saved time and still had enough resources left to make the mega-class Star destroyer
I believe Starkiller Base should’ve just been crippled in TFA and remain as a looming threat for the remainder of the trilogy while not being capable of using its laser. Like a mobile capitol planet for the First Order. Don’t care what anyone says, Starkiller Base and the First Order are pretty cool, at least in TFA.

Star Wars resistance fixes the new republic by giving us someone who grew up in the new republic react to it being gone and it makes it sad like with clone wars tv show and order 66 but doesn’t really fix the force awakens
