Mayerling has always been an extremely beautiful ballet due to Kenneth Macmillan's interpretation and Liszt 's music. This is amazing, however still nothing will ever beat the Royal Ballet 's version filmed at the ROH in 1994 with dancers including Irek Muckhamedov as Crown Prince Rudolf, Viviana Durante as Mary Vetsera, Leslie Collier as Countess Larisch , Darcey Bussell as Mitzi Caspar, Nicola Trannah as Empress Elisabeth and Jane Burn as Princess Stephanie. I have seen many versions including the Royal Ballet 's version since 94 and although close, not one will ever overshadow the magic found in the 94 version both the choreography and the dancers themselves are unsurpassed.
I totally agree with you. The performances of the entire cast are formidable- Hard to forget. I have that version recorded on VHS and unfortunately I can not get it on DVD. They are insurmountable. I have also searched the internet to get the music of the ballet and I do not find it I think it is not recorded for sale.
