Hope you enjoyed this fascinating story! At one point while describing the ship ‘Majestic’ we accidentally slipped a photo of a later vessel in. The ship Violet served in was a twin-funnelled white star liners of the same name from the late 1800s.

This women survived tuberculosis ,ww1 presumably ww2, Olympics collision, the sinking of the titanic ,the sinking of the britanic , and then still served on board ship well into the 50s then retired and learned how to drive and she wasn't bittered ,she was a delight, this women was a bad ass ,just imagine getting to talk to someone like that ,so miraculous

Used to work alongside her great Nephew while I was serving in the military. He told some wonderful stories about her, sounded like a wonderful lass.

@More_Row is it really so unbelievable that someone had descendants? If Violet's 6 siblings who made it to adulthood had 4 kids each, and each of those kids had only 2 children each (conservative estimates), then that leaves Violet with 48 great-nieces and nephews.
When they called Titanic unsinkable, they weren't talking about the liner they were talking about the Titan Violet Jessup.

Last year I visited her grave on April 14th, as it's an hour away from where I live, an amazing woman who deserves to be remembered.

I was listening to your video on Britannic's sinking last night and when you mentioned there that Violet had survived incidents on all three Olympic-class ships I thought "Wow, he should do a video on her!"

Violet's story is Oscar-bait, surely, I'm genuinely amazed there isn't a major biopic about her, or even a miniseries. Two of the most famous shipwrecks, WW1, some of the most beautiful and scary sceneries on planet earth - Argentina and the oceans. There's even a will-they/won't romance element as Violet was in love with a marine engineer who sailed on tramp steamers. There's even her biography to base a film off. All the ingredients are there. What a role that would be for whoever plays her. She was a complex, intriguing yet wholesome person. This video was very enjoyable though, beautifully told and visualized.

I saw a video once about Violet, that she during the sinking somehow got a hold of a baby and cared for it all the way onto the Carpathia. The story went that while she was sitting down on the deck a woman looking wild and frantic approached and said "that's my baby!" and proceeded to take the baby out of Violet's hands and ran off. She never actually found out who's baby it was or if that was the mother at all. However, years and years later she got a strange phone call that the caller asked if her name was Violet Jessup and when she said yes, the voice on the other line said that they were the baby she saved and hung up.
My mom and I went to a Titanic attraction where they hand you cards with the names of people on board the Titanic, and then, at the end, they reveal whether your person lived or died.
My mom got Violet Jessop, and immediately I said "Oh, you survived!" She was less than pleased!

There are only 2,200 people on the Titanic, if 10 thousand people went to see this exhibit, then statistically, at least 5 people got the card for Violet Jessop.
I was just reading about Violet Jessop a couple of days ago. It's too bad that James Cameron didn't use her character in the movie Titanic. Her character was in SOS Titanic, but as a hostess, not Stewardess. She was played by Australian actress Made Ryan.
Molly Brown didn't even get more than a mention. Not only that, but Cameron went out of his way to make the crew seem arrogant, overconfident, panicked, and cowardly.
It was a movie, not a documentary...
Thought it was Amanda Ryan in 'Britanic'.

She has a very quick scene in James Camerons movie when Thomas Andrews hands her a life belt, and says to put it on to set a good example fot the other passengers. 😮

While you must admire her tenacity, you still have to question Violet’s choices. After one catastrophe-- you do admire her for getting onto another ship--- after the actual sinking -- you question her choices -- after the third sinking you question her sanity. Very amazing story of an amazing survivor. THANK YOU for your informative videos.
She straddled the fine line between courage and insanity.
You could argue the same thing about firefighters. Constantly throwing themselves into the literal and metaphorical fire.
Surely she knew the Britannic was a target for the utterly unscrupulous Germans. However she was a nurse; she lived to serve, also she was a sailor, in service of her country, doing what she knew how to do best. People don't question similar actions when they are taken by a male soldier or sailor
You do what you have to and make a living… especially challenging for a woman in the early 20th century. Lots of people took whatever jobs they could. No less true of the men down in the boiler rooms of all steamships in peril on the sea.

Violet’s story has always been so remarkable to me. The odds of being on all three sister ships when they sank or had accidents is just so incredibly rare. Made for great stories in her later years I bet!

I remember that in one of my voyages with a line ship we past out of Kea island and the captain make an announcement that we are passing over Britanic wreck. It was the first time i was hearing for that ship. After that i was curious and look to know her story... it was then that i find out about Olympic and Titanic!!! I'm from Greece and i just want to say to you that you are doing great job. Sorry for my English!!!

We are all the same, most of us just are fortunate enough that we are not tested to the breaking point, the way Ms. Jessop was. But when you look for example to Ukraine, you'll see young people excel, go above and beyond, show initiative, tenacity and resolve, just as in the stories of WW1 and 2 for example.
Heart warming episode Mike, they should have made the ships out of Jessopism.
She's as legendary as the shipwrecks she survived and the most fascinating thing is she countined to serve on ships even afterwards, a true hero

For those who'd like to learn more about Violet there was a book published about her in 1997 titled "Titanic Survivor", it's the complete memoirs of Violet Jessop, annotated by famed ocean liner historian John Maxtone-Graham and published by Sheridan House. A fascinating story, to say the least!
As far as the Olympic-Hawke collision both sides blamed the other, naturally. However I've read that years later the Royal Navy admitted Hawke's steering gear malfunctioned which led to the collision. At any rate collisions in busy harbors weren't unusual at the time and of course that was the type of damage that Titanic was designed to withstand, Olympic's experience showed the design worked as anticipated.
Imagine, years later, being told "thank you for saving me."
Before this video, I had always heard that she had hit her head on the propellers of the Britannic and I was so confused as to how they didn’t slice right through her skull but her hitting her head on the bottom of her lifeboat makes so much more sense!

Violet Jessop was the ultimate survivor. I'm somewhat surprised, given how she was present at the disasters involving all three of White Star's biggest ships and the level of superstition that has historically been associated with ships and the sea, that she wasn't labeled a "Jonah" (one who brings disaster on ships merely by being aboard) and paid off to retire from anything to do with ships after the loss of the Britannic.
5:18 I think you made a little mistake there. If she was assigned to RMS Majestic before Olympic's maiden voyage, then I believe it was the RMS Majestic of 1889, not the RMS Majestic (former SS Bismarck) of 1914 which you have shown a picture of

At 5:11 thats a wrong ship on that picture. It´s RMS Majestic (1922) (originaly SS Bismarck (1914)) but there should be a picture of different ship- RMS Majestic (1989).
But thats only a minor mistake. Otherwise this channel is very profesional and i really love it! :)
G’day Mike, I was aware of Violet but didn’t have much detail on her amazing brushes with death.
Thanks to your excerpts from her book, I got a much better picture of her as a person of real dedication, modesty and empathy.
Had it been possible, Violet should have bought a lottery ticket. I’m sure she would have won first up as she truly had the luck of the Irish!

This is fantastic! And I love this new series. Might I recommend Irene “Renee” Harris, who got injured on the Titanic BEFORE it hit the iceberg and went on to become Broadway’s first female producer? I have a first edition of A Night to Remember signed by both her and Walter Lord, and she circled herself in the photograph of her lifeboat being rescued. I got the book for 10 cents in a library book sale, although it had clearly been donated for the sale and never actually shelved as a library book.
She sounds great. Violet was clearly a popular name at that time. My grandmother, Violet Troke, was born in 1905. She too, was a fighter.

Another great episode, Mike! I love the idea of a series about passengers and crew - JJ Astor, Archie Butt and Margaret Brown are well-documented, but no one talks much about Harry Widener, Major Peuchen, Mrs Ryerson or Dr Mclaughlin. I'm always happy to see your excellent work!
Thank you for covering Violet's story, it had to be told. I read somewhere that she thought the propeller had struck her as she came up and that as a result she had a fractured skull which went untreated for several days.

My mind has been blown as too how many times death has come for her and shes like "Nope!". Especially at the fact she was on all THREE of the White Star Line's iconic ships. She avoided a 24 foot spinning prop! Thats unfathomable!

In 1914 Violet Jessop was on another one of Harland & Wolff's ships, the SS Rohilla. The ship was also a total loss after running onto Whitby Rock, Yorkshire. She was rescued on the lifeboats first run to the wrecked ship. She described the Rohilla worse than her Titanic experience x

As a history buff, and a Yank who truly loves stories like this, I would have dearly loved to have met and talked to her. Alas, she died when I was 4. I absolutely LOVED this episode! Violet Jessop has always intrigued me, and I'm so glad to learn more about her, and admire her tenacity and courage.
Since your doing a video series on Titanic’s survivors and victims, there is three that I would highly recommend. The first is chief baker, Charles Joughin, who became a friendly hero by assembling his chefs during the sinking to help provide warm bread for each lifeboat, saved the lives of several children, threw deck chairs overboard so people could use them as rafts, and helped anyone he possibly could. He also survived by making sure that little whiskey went down with the ship. The second is Trimmer Hemming, who braved the concourse of the flooding Titanic to retrieve lanterns for the lifeboats, and helped lost passengers to the deck. The third is the ultimate hero aboard the Titanic, First Officer William Murdoch, who was responsible for saving the most lives that night. He may have been in charge of the ship at the time the iceberg struck, but he was competent officer who, thanks to his actions on the Starboard side of the ship, was responsible for saving a vast majority of the survivors that night before he sadly drowned with the ship.
I'm so glad you made a video on Violet's life, her story has been one of my favourites to research in terms of the Titanic and her memoir is pretty fantastic

Mike, how could Violette serve on RMS Majestic before being on Titanic and Olympic’s maiden voyages ? The ex-Bismarck came to the White Star Line only some years after WWI …🤔 could she even travel in Time ?
I think he meant the "old" Majestic (1889, sister ship of RMS Teutonic), but muddled up the pictures in editing. The old Majestic was retired and sold for scrap in early 1914, shortly before the war. Name was subsequently re-used for S.S. Bismarck.
Wasn't there another older ship named Majestic (not the one in the picture)? The 1889 one? That 1889 Majestic was a two-funneled ship and was much older than Olympic.

I was raised in a church going family, but never was really religious as an adult. I've known about Violet's story because I'm a Maritime history buff and it's an incredible story. That being said, I've come to believe that she was an angel sent by the Almighty as an example of sheer will, courage, determination and the ability to help heal people.

All jokes aside, though. This woman was a badass, and I truly hope that call she got at the end was real. It would be wonderful to know that the baby she rescued called her all those years later to let her know she was alive and well.

I remember reading about Violet Jessop when I came across her name while learning about HMHS Britannic. It was there I learnt she was on RMS Titanic also. I was thinking, what rotten luck to be on two ships, both being sister ships, on the days they were consumed by the sea. Then I also learnt that she was even on RMS Olympic during her incident with the HMS Hawke. I was blown away finding out she was on all 3 Olympic Class ships. I was thinking that it must've been so amazing working on all 3 ships but also how unlucky she must've been to be onboard them during Olympics collision and Titanic's and Britannic's final moments.
This was an amazing video! I learnt even more about Violet Jessop on how determined she was. From the beginning, she didn't have an easy life and it was close to be cut short. It's inspiring that she didn't give up after these terrible experiences. She instead kept going. I was thinking that maybe they should make a film about Miss Unsinkable as her story is inspiring though I think this video has done amazing job at telling her story. Again, this was amazing video!

Why there's the picture of RMS Majestic (1930s) during the 1900s, on the vid. It's quite anachronistic. But all in all, the video is very good explaining Violet's story and life.
