Composed in 1949, the work entitled 'Romanian dance' in English is a brief, modal, pedagogical piece in A minor playable by young piano students; dedicated to François-Martine Jolivet, the composer's daughter from his first marriage.
It is divided into two contrasting sections; firstly a quiet, peaceful, contemplative, and pastoral scene, followed by a frantic, lively, and gradually accelerating latter that slowly then rapidly elevates in dynamic. A climax then leads the work to conclude in F-sharp minor (though the key signature is actually not prescribed). The dance is, indeed, mostly without accidentals.
Along with sketches for his Hopi Snake Dance, the manuscript of the work is held by the Schøyen Collection in Oslo; having been auctioned in the 2010s under the authorisation of the estate of the composer by Alde.
