    Thanks for making this video, Mike. After watching this I had the confidence to pour a 600ft^2 slab 6" thick at 7" slump with superplasticizer added. The morning before, we'd poured the same floorplan at a different site, at 6" slump with super plasticiser... amazing the difference in ease of working the mix with the 7" slump vs. the 6" slump on the same floorplan. Both have cured out just fine, no blemishes. Did it in February during a freak nice week with no freezing diurnal weather, daytime temps in the upper 50s, lower 60's. We used a 24" grid of #3 fiberglass rebar, no fiber in the mix (although I considered using it). We also used hot water in the mix at the plant, and as needed at the site more was added. We were able to power pan and power float the slab about 3 hours later. So far, so good!

    I've drove mixer trucks for about a dozen or so years and have poured many a floors. And while I've never been on the full on business end, I've been in the trenches enough times to understand and to know what you've got will be absolutely fabulous.

    You are absolutely correct. People who make negative comments (armchair engineers) usually have no clue or assume the worst. Water reducers are great products with many different products and characteristics. We stopped doing flatwork over a year ago, not being able to keep up with walls. We generally pour walls at about 5.5 or 6 inch slump. Using a pump this does a great job. We don't normally use super but occasionally its needed. Great job on your floors.

  • @Ginyasha-

    Beautiful floor! You guys do the best vibra screeding I've ever seen. My crew and I have learned a ton from your videos. We lay out floors similarly with kick screeding when it's sloped or under 2000 sq. Ft. Otherwise we use our vibra tho we still can't get the floors quite as flat as kick screeding.
    We also like to put super plasticizer in our mud. We pour at around a 7" during the summer and the only time we don't like it is when it's windy. We have a very dry, hot, and windy climate here in central Washington and sometimes with the plasticizer, it seems that the top will go off way faster than the bottom when it's baking in the sun. Thanks for all the videos, Mike!

    Mike, I have poured vertical walls ICF for years and always pour 8"-8 1/2" slump and found almost no bugholes or ravel when I've stripped foam. Eliminated vibratory in concrete meets IRC and ASTM 318. Great products produce great work by making it easier on people.

    From what I understand, cement mix is an unusual material in that it exhibits both thixotropic (self-leveling: high slump) and "plastic" (like clay or lime mortar: low slump) which ordinarily are opposite characteristics. Adding water makes it more thixotropic but ruins the ultimate strength. A very dry mix is plastic and stronger but obviously a mother-bear to work. Apparently this water reducer basically does the same thing as adding detergent to water by lowering the surface tension, or the attractions between the constituent ingredients. But it doesn't interrupt the hardening process. Pretty exciting stuff.

    Fantastic job. I wish our residential customers made more use of HRWR or even MRWR for pouring floors. Easier to pull, less shrinkage, higher strength and ultimately faster turn around time for our Ready Mix trucks. We don’t do as many “Open Slabs” like that in Ontario, most floors are poured through the basement window. Still even pouring by wheelbarrow through a window would be much better with these modern superplasticizers.

    What you refer to as a bulkhead I believe is called a walkout. The area where eventually a drain will go and stairs will be poured and finished leading outside of the basement.

    Hi Mike quick questions. Does this method only work for slabs that are perfectly level? For example if you had a slab that has a 2% crossfall, would having such a high slump mean that it would self level again after screeding and you'd lose the fall? Equally would using the vibrating screed also level out the crossfall you're trying to get? Thanks for all the tips!!

    i found the Adva product to be unpredictable only in the sense that the same amount of water added affected the final slump in different ways.... EXP950 is another grace product and i have found it to be more reliable..All of these products are mid and high range reducers, the difference being the dosage.. other factors that affected the process were temperature, and time on the truck...EXP can be used as a plasticizer or everyday mid range water reducers.. personally i liked the combination of a high range EXP dosage with a 1/2 dose of D-17, a sucrose based set retarder, (for long hauls) on a hot day...concrete was sleepy til it got on site, then very little water got me the slump i needed without really affecting set time

    Not a contractor, just looking to pour a pad for a small shed (10'x10'), that's how I ended up here. Just curious, is the water reducer just a surface tension reducer? Kind of like using a little dish soap in herbicides? A suffocate? I won't be using any, just wondering.

    • @hyperbaricaxom1763
      @hyperbaricaxom1763 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally different than a surface tension reducer, tho the end effects do have 'some' similarities. There are mid-range water reducers (MRWR) and high range water reducers (HRWR)(also known as superplasticizers), as this was. They create a chemical reaction with the cement powder in the mix to greatly increase the slump (flow/'liquidity') of the 'whole' mix, while maintaining a low water/cement ratio (which is vital for concrete strength). But it's not a surfactant.

  • @Connerscementfinishing
    @Connerscementfinishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    We have super p here. I never use it it’s to wet for me. Most my pours have falls to it so I can’t use it. I used to use a midrange reducer but by the time it would get to me it was spent already. And for some reason I can’t get them to give me more percentages of midrange. 1% is all they’ll give me. I’d rather run 2-3% mid range than add 30-40 gallons But I gotta get in on the ground.

      No, low water/cement ratio is the correct term. When you use water reducer instead of adding water it means you still achieve a low water to cement ratio for strong concrete. It's not talking about the actual "wet" slump your pouring.

    It is usually a nice creamy mud and a good driver can chute it further ( quick blast) so you don't have to rake your ass off.

    not sure how luke and darren can have that big of a pouch if pouring concrete everyday maybe since you are using this water reducer stuff it has made it too easy on them and not giving them a proper workout? also you mentioned since you do this for a living you think im gonna pour junk concrete ? i cant believe a guy that been in bussiness this long would say that do you know how many incompentant contractors there are, back when i poured concrete we never heard of water reducer i would be scared to use it anyways

    Interesting subject. I don't do concrete at all, but have a recently retired contractor friend who did that work for 50 years. He claims to be some kind of concrete scientist, and always says it has to be low slump. I also noticed he always had problems retaining employees - maybe that's part of the reason why?

    It this a job where they have Mix design approved, or it’s just a private job where you are in control to make the decision ??

    I may have missed this information, but I'm going to raise my hand and ask, what is the slump on the mix before the superplasticizer is added to make the 8 inch slump?

    • @SootyMangabey.
      @SootyMangabey. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends on the type and amount added..usually a 4 inch slump.

      @@SootyMangabey. Thanks, however there is a definitive answer that if I have a concrete mix of "x" slump will yield a concrete mix with "y" superplasticizer will give me an eight inch slump. No guesses please. I can do that all on my own.

      @@mrvv8337 if you want an exact answer specify the number of yards the type of mix how much cement is in the mix and the type of superplasticiser used, and Is it being added on site or from the plant.

      @@mrvv8337 Not true, what your saying is only representative of concrete in the batch process. Due to temperature, drive time, thermic rate and plant added chemicals the amount of plasticizer added on site to bring it to "8" could very drastically change. A standard concrete mix would have a 1 to 4 water to cement ratio and the designed slump would be 80mm or 3" but if it took 45min to get to site and it was a 30 (95) degree day water loss would be much higher. If you get to site and just add SP theres a chance the SP won't be as reactive as SP needs water to be reactive. Soooo its not a definitive answer.
