I don't think it was validation at all. It was to get their message out to the entire world. By putting your name on the chart, you're getting people to look you up and see your message. The validation comes as a cherry on top.

Courts won't care. Private company, no contract between the parties. At best he could try filing a deceptive advertising complaint with the FTC, but as he isn't actually their customer it probably won't have much weight. The most effective course of action would be a social media crusade naming and shaming the company or pressuring Billboard to cut ties with them if they don't change.

That's why years later I went to music production school to learn how to do all of the things so that I could build a music production company and hopefully label that can stick a giant middle finger to the mainstream music industry! The “data collection company” doesn’t really work for Billboard (even if they are getting paid by Billboard). They are working for the record companies, distribution companies, etc. Independent artists are a threat to that business model.

As a International DJ or 30 years, I have watched ghost writers leak information on artists making the charts and never made a track ever! It's all pay for play. I stepped back from the music industry after being canceled in 2018. Fck it! The industry is disgusting, shady, and abusive! Good on you for exposing just one of the dark sides of the industry.
I’m 7 minutes in and this is interesting, but I want to know which data collection agency you were in contact with. I report physical sales to billboard independently every album and initially I had to give them access to the website’s backend, which I did. They’ve never asked about publishing or anything of that nature. They did count the physical sales though, which were in the thousands. I’m sure I can help.
I walked away from the music industry in the early 90s, I saw the hypocrisy and corruption. I have not bought an album since, and would only listen on free streams or radio. Until today. You would think that the TH-cam numbers would be telling as to what ballpark you are distributing to BUT better yet would be income tax receipts, how many blank CD's your printer goes through for each album, and how much postage you are purchasing through your postage machine. That’s correct, my friend. As an independent label, I can verify this. Most labels are owned by the big 3: Sony, Warner, Universal, and they make up >80% of streaming. Whether you like it or not, most of your money when paying for Spotify or Apple Music goes directly to them.
Dude, I’ve been a musician and in music forever. The fact is, the entire industry is rigged and has been since the 1950s. It’s a money machine that benefits the record companies and the record companies alone. The artists themselves receive pennies on the dollar. The charts have all been rigged since the early days of music. Just look how the industry buys into the radio stations or at least did before streaming hit. I’m sure they have bought into the streaming services also. The Grammys, Billboard music awards, all of that stuff is a popularity contest meant to promote up-and-coming artists and make them look bigger in order to draw more people to buy more downloads, watch more videos and gas up the industry machine. Why do you think people like Michael Jackson, Prince, George Michael and how many others were trying to sue themselves out of the contract that they signed when they were kids that essentially took everything from them and made them slaves to the industry. While making record companies billions and trillions of dollars. People like you are a gremlin to the machine. Threatening to bring it down and expose just how unfairly they’ve been treating and paying the people making the music that drives their machine. Before the Internet and TH-cam and other ways that artist could promote themselves, there was no other recourse but to sign a contract that essentially signed your music and life away. Making artists indebted to those record companies for the life of their contracts, which unfortunately sometimes extend their entire careers. Keep doing what you’re doing, as other independent artists are doing the same… let’s bring down the machine and make the music industry fair for those who are creating. I don't think it was validation at all. It was to get their message out to the entire world. By putting your name on the chart, you're getting people to look you up and see your message. The validation comes as a cherry on top.

At best he could try filing a deceptive advertising complaint with the FTC, but as he isn't actually their customer it probably won't have much weight. The most effective course of action would be a social media crusade naming and shaming the company or pressuring Billboard to cut ties with them if they don't change.

The “data collection company” doesn’t really work for Billboard (even if they are getting paid by Billboard). They are working for the record companies, distribution companies, etc. Independent artists are a threat to that business model.

As a International DJ or 30 years, I have watched ghost writers leak information on artists making the charts and never made a track ever! It's all pay for play. I stepped back from the music industry after being canceled in 2018. Fck it! The industry is disgusting, shady, and abusive! Good on you for exposing just one of the dark sides of the industry.
I’m 7 minutes in and this is interesting, but I want to know which data collection agency you were in contact with. I report physical sales to billboard independently every album and initially I had to give them access to the website’s backend, which I did. They’ve never asked about publishing or anything of that nature. They did count the physical sales though, which were in the thousands. I’m sure I can help.

I walked away from the music industry in the early 90s, I saw the hypocrisy and corruption. I have not bought an album since, and would only listen on free streams or radio. Until today. You would think that the TH-cam numbers would be telling as to what ballpark you are distributing to BUT better yet would be income tax receipts, how many blank CD's your printer goes through for each album, and how much postage you are purchasing through your postage machine. I've never listened to Tom MacDonald, but I watched this entire video, and I am furious. It really sounds like an elite circle of people that won't participate unless they get cut in to the profits. Because you are independent no one is getting a piece of the pie, it makes rage on the inside. And this is why tons of independent artists never make it, because they don't have a parasite of a record label sucking their wallets dry.

That’s correct, my friend. As an independent label, I can verify this. Most labels are owned by the big 3: Sony, Warner, Universal, and they make up >80% of streaming. Whether you like it or not, most of your money when paying for Spotify or Apple Music goes directly to them.

Dude, I’ve been a musician and in music forever. The fact is, the entire industry is rigged and has been since the 1950s. It’s a money machine that benefits the record companies and the record companies alone. The artists themselves receive pennies on the dollar. The charts have all been rigged since the early days of music. Just look how the industry buys into the radio stations or at least did before streaming hit. I’m sure they have bought into the streaming services also. The Grammys, Billboard music awards, all of that stuff is a popularity contest meant to promote up-and-coming artists and make them look bigger in order to draw more people to buy more downloads, watch more videos and gas up the industry machine. Why do you think people like Michael Jackson, Prince, George Michael and how many others were trying to sue themselves out of the contract that they signed when they were kids that essentially took everything from them and made them slaves to the industry. While making record companies billions and trillions of dollars.
People like you are a gremlin to the machine. Threatening to bring it down and expose just how unfairly they’ve been treating and paying the people making the music that drives their machine. Before the Internet and TH-cam and other ways that artist could promote themselves, there was no other recourse but to sign a contract that essentially signed your music and life away. Making artists indebted to those record companies for the life of their contracts, which unfortunately sometimes extend their entire careers.

I agree with you, but to be fair to the music industry, most artists that they work with don't pan out. They take losses on those, lots of them. They rip off more successful artists to cover costs. However er, they make entirely too much money at the expense of these artists. Tom can be a real threat to that. I'm with him.
