Aw, man - I love that beard. I believe it's called "The Civil War Samurai" Thank you sir, in seriousness for the elegant addition of quotations and references.
So much truth is presented in this speech in a way I've not heard it before. Unfortunately it's still not taken seriously enough by the businesses and corporations that should be involved in ensuring security is a priority due to the way they practice business. Budget and quarterly profits are more important than the ideas discussed, yet the decisions made are likely to have a domino effect on everything else. Policy is just an idea that can easily be followed, what about actual logic when implementing technology into a system or network. Very few organizations actually invest in cyber security, yet these decisions effect everyone...
It is hard not to agree with the basic ideas, Dan Geer puts forward, especially the thing about letting the source code follow the licence. However, this will undoubtedly mean that common software, to companies, etc. will improve significantly, BUT goverment(s) and their agencies will continue to use closed source. The objective MUST be to prevent software to be a battleground for state/other conflicts. To be a "security person" also includes being against misuse of software and skills - with all the political issues that follows, so think where you vote next time...
Of course you can't answer questions.. Guess they didn't prepare them before hand, eh? How many words did he utter that weren't on the script he was reading from? 5? 6?
One of the best keynotes I have ever scene in person. Re-watching still gives me goose bumps. Color me a "fan boy".
What an eloquent and intellectual speech. Masterpiece of a true Cyber Samurai !
Still one of the most brilliant speeches I've ever heard.
