Its interesting to me how he starts with a colorful background wash thats abstract... he then outlines the portrait only to fill in and obscure the original wash completely. What is the purpose of the first wash? He calls it spontaneous realism and I think has said that the colors are not pre selected... he works from black and white images, i'm guessing to not influence his color choices. Beautiful work and though he works with speed, his skill and choices are done with ease that is deceptive. I appreciate that he posts his process with images of his tools and technique. Cheers!

Hay pasos que no filma porque quiere dar la impresión que es un virtuoso que todo le sale bien improvisado. Parte cuidadosa de la "mística" del "artista". Desde escoger la imagen (de la que claro no es autor), proyectar y delinearla, escoger de antemano los colores con una pintura preparatoria, el modelado, y la expresión. No es creativo, pero es un competente ilustrador.

When all the paintings turn out roughly the same because of the "technique". Like Francis Bacon, Lucien Feud at al, especially over a number of years, then it becomes clear that there is "technique over substance" and therefore very shallow art! Glorified cartoons.

Bacon and Freud created the images and gestated a style original, and filled with emotion, bravery and smarts. This journeyman didn't have the person in his studio, didn't take the pictures, didn't work to create a style. Sorry, bad comparison.

@@thonyth1188 - I appreciate the merit in your comment, especially about having personal contact with the subject etc. , and, moreover, having sufficiently deep empathy with it - whatever that is - to impel the expression in a particular way, but I still believe that after decades of painting as a consequence of those particular "feelings" a distinct change should occur otherwise it reflects upon the artist's inability to grow emotionally let alone Spiritually. Originality of "Vision" and powerful emotional content in (painting) expression doesn't necessarily guarantee merit........I still stand by my claim about the majority of so-called acclaimed contemporary painters. (Painting on large canvases also seems to imply importance - Japanese collectors are notorious for pricing their potential purchases as investment by the square foot. :-) )

The novelty soon wears off when one realises that all the portraits are the same; from the front, mouth closed. Yawn yawn yawn. Rich buyers no doubt love it!

If someone with no interest in or understanding of art imagined an artist, an " expressionist" style, chose images, organised a preview, a show, a studio space and some dungarees and then videoed it. It would be this nonsense because, in fact, all of this content is the product of such a someone. Probably Mr Voka, an imaginary name.
