    I can’t wait for “I NEED U”. This song is really special for us armys because BTS got their first music show win with it. Of course the haters bashed them, saying it was unfair or rigged. For BTS, their journey of actual success started with “I NEED U” which is from their first popular album, “The Most Beautiful Moment In Life”. The song talks about their struggles with depression and anxiety. It’s an absolute masterpiece from the first listen that makes you think hard about how artistic the boys are.

      @@ehehehe- I feel like the songwriting got more lyrically complex in this era, too - right? Earlier songs are kind of about what they're about, but moving forward we get a lot of layers and depth, and I Need U seems like the turning point for that. The album after it is full of songs with a lot of depth and lyrical brilliance. They started trying to capture specific complex emotions...

    They just wanted a reason to target BTS. Calling them plagiarism boys, copycats, saying their lyrics disrespected women when there were actual idols who went to jail for rape, drugs, sexual trafficking etc.
    But Namjoon took it to heart, he apologised & corrected himself. He even had discussions with women studies professor who looked over his lyrics. No Kpop idol go to that extent, they don’t even bother to apologise.
    He is a well known feminist who is vocal about it now.
    When we compare them with other Kpop idols & music industry artists, BTS are angels!

    • @evantesseract737

      And you can see RM's respect for women throughout his career - just watch how he talks about female artists and interacts with women he's collaborating with. The groups are so segregated we don't get to see that much of it, but I was particularly struck by him working with Youjeen recently.
      Also just about as soon as they had the power to control their interview questions they stopped letting people ask them for their "ideal type." There are probably multiple reasons for that, but it's a good thing. 😁

    • @adrianamora7904
      @adrianamora7904 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think many idols apologise because they are forced to do it by the public or they agency but they don't mean it and don't do anything to learn. There is also some that never apologise.
      And i hear this from some korean reactors that new BTS at the time, but i'm not sure if is true. They said at that time the feminist movement were hot and some radicals feminists were fighting,then War or Hormone was out for a few weeks and those feminists and haters took the chance to hate and bring down BTS.

      i hate army’s lie about Namjoon apologizing, when they’ve all done hurtful, racist, misogynistic, cultural appropriation, uneducated things and he’s only apologized for a dimes worth of everything, they’ve shown us they’re no longer those uneducated boys but let’s not lie and say they’ve verbally apologized for every single thing they’ve done.

    I think it's also super important to note that bts learned from the criticism they received. Whatever the intention behind the song, the fact is that they did receive backlash for it and it was not a happy time. I am actually glad they didn't double down on this but instead took the time to reflect on what had gone wrong and in what ways their actions could be construed as misogynistic or offensive. Namjoon has gone on record to say that he took the time to really understand went wrong and how he (and bts) could avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future. I commend them for this.

      From my understanding their is one line that is translated in to something along the lines of “we just want to do them”, but from understanding the word do isn’t really the greatest translation because it the word (sorry idk remember the exact Korean word) but it has a mathematical terms which when the line comes it should be interpreted more like they are trying to figure out the girls/women. (I mean men/boys don’t really understand how girls/Women’s brains work). Hopefully this makes sense. I think is one the biggest problems of the song is how it was translated…idk this is my opinion and my understanding.

    The biggest thing that antis ignored or allowed to go right over their heads was the fact that this song is completely satirical. The choreo is the best indication. The English translations were the part that antis latched onto. This is very much during a time when no one but BigHit, BTS, and ARMY wanted to see BTS succeed. I think context is extremely important in trying to understand the “controversy” surrounding this song. I think the members did learn some valuable things from it, but they weren’t doing the things antis were accusing them of. Thank you for reacting! 💜

He can be classic disco 60s (Dynamite), or he can be happy pills (permission to dance), bad boy (War of Hormone) or Greek god (Dionysus)or.. etc. not only his vibe, expressions change, but also his vocals change accordingly. What a most versatile Artist!! RESPECT!!!

  • @cmoneman3025
    @cmoneman3025 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    As much as the controversy following this song seems unnecessarily overblown and stupid to me, I always liked that they took the opportunity to seek ways they could grow. Namjoon spoke about talking to a senior artist friend at the time, because he was so worried /confused/frustrated -- about hiphop and music, tropes and feminism in that regard...if I'm not mistaken, it was years later revealed to be eaeon. And, well this was mainly motivated by worry, which makes me sad, but he also spoke about sending his lyrics to a professor from then onwards for a second opinion to check that he wasn't saying anything prejudiced/misogynistic by accident ever again. RM specifically has even spoken about this matter on American television(I think CBS) on an interview not too long ago, maybe 1-2 years back, about how he's grown as a person.
    So this era did contribute to Bangtans growth as individuals..they are all fierce supporters of women's rights and the underprivileged today. Still think this song is a banger and I love rm's verse specifically😅... but we saw them grow up over the years, become more socially aware and conscientious, and I'm proud to see how they've grown like this. They've made mistakes but they've always been willing to learn and grow and blow us all away by their beautiful characters

    the intention of the song is not anything bad or to offend anyone. there are talking about youth, teenagers what they think and stuff if u check out bts album and songs in their release order u can connect it all. its all in the timeline, this song is from their first album dark and wild. so their theme and story is about teenagers of that stage of their life and they evolve through their music talking about bigger issues behind human emotions mental health and stuff.also this is early hiphop era thus the strong beats and rapping adds on.

    Excited for another reaction!!!! I personally don't really have an issue with this song, as I actually think it totally represents the mindset of teenage boys. On the surface it's a fun, catchy song but if I had to objectively evaluate what people were upset about, it is that the only attributes they appreciate (through the lyrics) is the girl's looks, nothing about her being smart, kind, funny, etc. I also didn't love the line about girls being a present. I think the big misstep here is I don't think they really thought through the context in which this song was being delivered into. So, yes it is their perspective of being hormone filled teenage boys but it's being delivered to (mostly) teenage girls. At this point most of the fan base was teenage girls, which can be highly impressionable, and given the amount of pressure teenage girls (especially) already face about the way they look (100's of overt and subliminal messages a day) this could be seen to reinforce the perception that looks are the most important/valuable thing about girls/women. Knowing how much they think about and care about the messages they send through their lyrics, this might not have been the message they wanted to deliver.
    The music video adds a whole other layer - a group of teenage boys checking out, following and competing for the same girl they randomly see on the street, which from a females perspective doesn't feel great, if anything, for a lot of women that feels threatening and dehumanizing.
    I don't see this as them deliberately trying to be offensive it more represents a lack of awareness about the issues young girls/women face, due to their (BTS) own age, experience and culture. Plus (and I could be wrong), I don't think a lot of the people who worked with them on their music at this point were women, who might have brought a different perspective to this song. All of that is to say that I can understand why people might have reacted negatively to the song. It was also WAY overblown, and this song is tame compared to western music. However, they learned a lot through this experience (and I love that they used it as an opportunity to reach out to different people to better understand the issue) and I think if they hadn't have had to go through it we might not have gotten the Love Yourself era. Sorry for the long comment!

    • @cmoneman3025
      @cmoneman3025 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Excellent comment! I want to add that I feel like the majority of their contemporaries were not putting much better songs in that regard... and even kpop boy group songs that preceeded them would often focus solely on girls looks...a huge kpop boy group song just before WOH was EXO's Growl.... exo has a couple sins I like but a lot of their lyrics felt vaguely rape-y to me, especially early on😅. So, considering the environment they were in and the fact that the music industry was nowhere near as "pro-feminism" as it is today..I think I understand why their staff would've given them the green light. And I 100% understand how teen/young adult boys would come up with this...they didn't have time to date back then, they were complaining about having to write love songs to hypothetical girls, I mean, duh! But I think a big reason why WOH may have struck a bad chord was how..for lack of a better word...crude it was. They called it War of Hormone, they were talking about pimples and midriffs and being 18. They were too honest and straightforward, explicit about being a teenage boy. When their seniors sang about forcibly taking a girl, they were a "beast" so it was okay. Or an underage girl giving up her "flowers". That's also okay. But teen boys who set themselves apart for speaking up for the you g generation, speaking about societal pressures and teenage relationships...suddenly implying that they watch porn on their computer and talking about how they can't take their eyes off a pretty girl showing some skin and how they really wanna date her but feel tongue-tied cuz she's so pretty? Scandalous.

      @heathermurray7130 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cmoneman3025 Thanks for that additional info. I wasn't around in those days (I mean, I was alive, I just didn't listen to Korean music at the time) and I really only listen to BTS and OnlyOneOf, so I wasn't really sure how this particular song fit into the kpop context at that time. I didn't even touch on the type of messages those types of songs send to boys. We often analyze social conditioning for girls but not so much boys. At best, they reinforce some negative stereotypes about masculinity that can be really problematic (not necessarily WOH but some of the other examples you referenced). That is one of the reasons I am really glad that BTS used this as a learning opportunity instead of getting defensive and doubling down.

    Styling-wise they didn't have nearly as much say back then. I liked this sort of British pop punk look here. And I think that ties into the location, which is an English village set, and the edit. Cause black red and white are popular with that style.

    Because you guys are musicians, you should do album listening parties with their albums because as BTS said themselves, it's actually their B-Side tracks that truly shine and tell the story they are trying to convey with each album being a concept album. Some of their best tracks are not title tracks. Their intros and epilogues are often very meaningful and/ or poetic tone setters.
