Marsh Clubmoss (Lycopodiella inundata) Timelapse in the New Forest, England

  • 1.5 years, filming ten populations of Marsh Clubmoss in different habitats in the New Forest. The results are mixed, with most plants showing a chaotic lifecycle. Three factors however did become clear:
    1. The unusually harsh winter of 2017-2018 resulted in a much faster disintegration of the vegetative stems, but this was followed by a dramatic level of regeneration from the fragments, which was then observed across the country with much higher population counts in 2018.
    2. In milder winters the stems simply sit throughout the winter, doing very little
    3. Little visual evidence for sexual reproduction was observed, so either it doesn't happen much, or it's difficult to observe
    4. Even in the same habitat in the same year some populations decline and some increase, with little observable reason for this.
