those gods did not let monastery to be build so Padmasbhaba asked them to let king build the monastery as his intention was good, but those gods challenged Padmashbhava to come to tibet himself, at that time he was in Nepal. Padhmasambhava then travelled to tibet through mustand. he then transformed himself to a wrathful god to scare those gods so to this day such a dance like ritual is performed by lamas wearing a wrathful face-masks before building a monastery
respecting a local gods, spirits and gurus goes back from the time of Buddha, as you all know there were many accomplished gurus before after and in times of Buddha. once an elder guru felt that Lord Buddha did not understand nature of Karma so he sent one of his disciple to challenge Lord Buddha. But this disciple realised that Lord Buddha's teaching of Karma was in fact correct. so he begged to become a disciple of Lord Buddha's right there and then but Lord Buddha told him it is fine that you can become my disciple but you must continue paying whatever fees you have been paying to your old guru. so Padhmasabhava continued same traditions of subduing those challenging gods in Nepal and tibet but at the same time respecting them with gifts and offerings to continue as they were and in return they become a Buddha Dhamma protector.
