The Shaolin Temple became commercialized since about the late 1970's early 1980's and now is a protected treasure of UNESCO. Bodhidharma isn't the founder of Kung Fu & Zen Buddhism. He contributed to both like many others before and after him. But out of those many others he became infamous and rose to the position held in history, culture,... because of word-of-mouth, affection praise,... starting with the emperor which held all the power and was a Buddhist who came to highly appreciate Bodhidharma. And then there was Huike who became Bodhidharma's first and only disciple establishing his version of Chan Buddhism along with oral and other traditions in honor of his teacher within Shaolin culture, many others interested in Buddhism, especially Chan Buddhism, most of all especially in Bodhidharma. Chan Buddhism was an umbrella term for the many different & separate ways Buddhism took shape, especially mixing in with the culture such as other things like Taoism, Confucianism, Chinese philosophies & beliefs,... Huike was the devotee that cut off his left arm to devote himself to learning from Bodhidharma which the one hand salute came from within Shaolin culture. Bodhidharma is given credit and all is put on him for what Huike and others after them and their contributions; added, developed, evolved, transformed,... for simplifications, honor what Bodhidharma/Buddhism meant to them,... But Bodhidharma wasn't interested in anything else but meditation. He didn't just meditated for 9 years but also another segment of 4 or 5 more years after he left the cave and entered the temple. And continued throughout the rest of his life. Which is why he introduced Huike to The Lankavatara Sutra since the temple was already the center for Buddhism; transmissions, translations,... for him to figure out himself. And that Huike had to meet Bodhidharma "Mind to mind, heart to heart". To establish a form of communication which is beyond normal. The foundation of Bodhidharma's "Buddhism or Chan Buddhism" was meditation, non-verbal and/or non-physical communication. Huike, a warrior that became a Buddhist monk and then a student/disciple of Bodhidharma contributed to the establishment of the foundation of the mixture of Martial Arts/Buddhism traditions and curriculums that developed at the Shaolin Temple that started with the Buddhist monks Batuo, Sengchou and Huiguang. Bodhidharma was chosen to be the historical figure known today since the stories when they were produced during the 1600's ce since much of history before that was more like a long game of "Telephone/Chinese Whisper" played throughout history. Many years before Bodhidharma's arrival, Batuo was the Buddhist monk The Shaolin Temple was built for by the emperor during the 400's ce which started with not just as a temple for Buddhist practices but as the center headquarter for it's knowledge; transmissions, translations,.... And close relationship with the government and political history. He had with him 2 Buddhist monk disciples Sengchou & Huiguang that were previously warriors/martial artists before becoming monks that joined Batuo. Huike was previously a warrior turned Buddhist before his encounter and joining Bodhidharma. Kung Fu is a result of the culture going back thousands of years before, during and after Bodhidharma's time. Zen Buddhism goes way back to India, to Siddhartha Guantama/"The Buddha". Zen Buddhism is a product, the result of Chan Buddhism from China that made it's way to Japan and mixed in with the culture. Chinese Chan Buddhism is the result of Buddhism, especially Chan Buddhism from India brought to and developed and evolved in China as a byproduct of mixing in with the culture. Taking different shapes as it developed, transformed, evolved,... taking from the Lankavatara Sutra, Diamond Sutra, Heart Sutra,....
