From Xena: Warrior Princess Season 6 Episode 6, “The Abyss”: Xena (Lucy Lawless), Gabrielle (Renee OConnor) and Virgil cross pathes with a group of savage cannibals. When Gabrielle and Virgil get captured by them, Xena must save them. But it isn't going to be easy sneaking into a camp full of cannibals.

My great grandpa always loved this show. He didn’t know how to use the remote control and it was one of those vintage tv. But whenever zena comes out it was tv time. Such good memories from the show. RIP grandpa
One of the grittiest and most intense episodes of the series and one I thought was shot exceptionally well. The primal and unreasoning nature of the cannibals made them a formidable and frightening foe. This episode is further proof the series is not "the cheesy action show" some purport it to only be.
One of the best episodes for me, scarred me as child lol
That's what I like about Xena.
She fights with anything she can get her hands on.
But she prefers and specializes in fighting with fish
Just like Jacky Chan.
Looking back whenever I enjoyed seeing Xena beat up the bad guys, I now know how much the stunt men put their safety and well being on the line just to make the show a success.
Glad you appreciate it. I remember working on part of this scene as a stuntie. We couldn't see bugger all out of the masks, just a small bit out of the mouth of the boar head so it was really hard to do anything properly. I'm the guy on the right you barely see get taken out by a cannibal Xena kicks along the ground. We did multiple takes and because I couldn't see the guy coming towards me (and one other stuntie) I kept misjudging my jump so he was hitting my boots. Poor guy got a few bruises, I felt bad about that. That was probably the worse costume I had to wear. Getting hit with tons of water whist wearing it wasn't much fun either.
@@thirdeyenz Stunt men are one of the most overlooked people in the entertainment industry. There really should be a category in award ceremonies for best stunt work because you guys are amazing.
@@asbaran Thanks and yes I agree. I wasn't that talented but we had some amazing people who have gone on to work in Hollywood like Zoë Bell, Sheree Swords and Ben Cooke. There definitely should be more recognition than just showing them in the DVD extras.
@@thirdeyenz Lucy and Renee were/are full of praise for all of you who worked on the show, in the commentaries, etc. (and deservedly so). The action of Xena was excellently done, and IMO has still to be bettered on TV even though the show ended twenty years ago. The Hong Kong influenced wire-fu stuff was so unique and still is.
@@maxsommers6843 Yeah I was always impressed with the inventiveness of the gags. The coordinators and directors always tried to make the action as entertaining as possible.

Lucy and Renee mentioned in an interview that this was the toughest scene Renee ever did.
She really was tied up and having those men smearing that cold mud on her body, and then getting the pipe out in her mouth; she said she had to try to subdue her adrenaline because if she actually “fought” to get out, she would have.
Looks more like their special secret sauce....
The best part is when Xena always kick butt and rescue Gabrielle and Virgil
I always found this one of the most darkest scenes in this show tbh the makeup on those male cannibals was good, him eating at the meat on the fire and then covering gabrielle in a spicy looking sauce lol and then tying her up and the tube in her mouth that alllowes the smoke to come out when shes being cooked
Yeah it was also the worst scene to film for Gabrielle’s actress, she felt so constricted and passive in that attire/behaviour
So 100 cannibals running around in all directions but couldn’t stop Gabrielle freeing virgil. Saddest direction !!!

Always loved it that Xena killed while Hercules saved everyone. That alone made Xena a much more modern character than the other.
That's not the point. Both of them are ancient fantasy characters, but while Hercules was a half-god, Xena was a human with a dark side. This scene is a good example of giving up realism in favour of action, show and plot: Xena is greatly outnumbered, but all her enemies are running around the camp doing nothing instead of attacking her all at once, which is what would happen in a modern show.
@@astrius4125 Greek gods was very dark. That's not the point. Xena is more modern because Hercules was a show for kids, while Xena was a show for teenagers and adults.

Hercules did actually kill on occasion especially in the TV movies and Season 1.

Ever time I crave eating meat, I remember this episode that I was so discussed when they were preparing Gabrielle for food and reminded me we do the same with animals. It turns my stomach, and I eat something plant based. I watched this years ago, but still remember it vividly

I love how the Chakram continued to 'fight' and keep the cannibals at bay until Xena gave it the 'return to me' look at 4:30 - Just don't even try when Xena lets loose the Chakram to fight in tandem with her!

That was one of the weirdest Gabriel and Zena show s they had these zombie like cannibal s caught people on this unknown island and they made the victim s like turkey s they but all types of unknown sauces on the victim s and roasted the people victim s out side like roasted chicken and all these cannabals

Gabrielle misjudging situations feels so tiresome for three episodes in a raw. She murdered an innocent fan of hers and now there’s an actual danger where xena risked her life to trap the cannibals under the waterfall yet gabrielle’s moral kicked in again and I don’t like how virgil confused ‘’compassion’’ with ‘’saving someone’s life’’ just to make her feel better
Also even though virgil seemed to be a joxer no.2 he was a decent recurring character and way more handy compare to his useless father, I don’t like how he got rid of so easily without any explanation. (6episodes of virgil>>>> joxer’s entire run) but I guess that's the perks of being the producer’s brother
Virgil departed without even forgive eve for killing his father, another false decision the writers made with him by deleting the scene in 6x04 where he actually did forgive eve, writers have a thing for deleting the most interesting scenes like those two in 4x21
At least it was nice touch to see xena using her flamethrower skill again
Gabrielle didn't mean to kill her innocent fan it was accidental she mistaken him for a someone else there's a difference

Well, Gabrielle was injured from being stabbed and falling off a waterfall. Plus I think she didn't want to make a move til the time is right because she knows how Xena operates. It is funny tho, her sais are there the whole time. I wish we got season six Gabrielle a bit sooner, where she's at the point she can handle herself.
This was also just after she was questioning herself and decisions due to the fact that she killed that boy in the previous episode..

Obviously Zena didn't get the memo from Secretary Blinken that we must respect all cultures. She was supposed to send a sternly worded letter to the Cannibals that she would like to enter a dialogue on the matter of what's for dinner while General Milley plans a retaliatory strike on an unrelated village full of children.
