I would never call these people poor: they have everything they need to live and to spare, they have each other, they seem to be lovely and hospitable; and their country is beautiful

Those people may not have much in terms of the latest tech, cars, smooth infrastructure, and such, but I was impressed seeing the bounty of their gardens and farms, and so they can keep themselves well fed with very healthy and fresh food, and also they are kind people that maintain community ties well. I'm impressed.

Being able to support your family on a farm is far from poverty, it's tremendous wealth. I'm not sure what happened in the past few centuries, but the contrast with neighboring Afghanistan is undeniable. For all its failures, the Soviets/Russians must've done something right.

The answer is irrigation. The woman said that they don't have rain for whole summer. That's true. But they have a several rivers. From these rivers Uzbeks dug up channels which split to smaller channels which split to even smaller channel. Literally every household and farm had their own personal channel called 'Arik'. They have dug them up by hand for hundreds and thousands of years. In the early Soviet times there were saying 'Ташкент- город хлебный' which means Tashkent is a rich city, full of food. During the Russian revolution, the famines of 20s-30s and WW2 the waves of hungry Russians fled there to survive.
Afghanistan is more mountainous. No big rivers. Hard for agriculture.
This is how 'Arik' look like

How people are happy there even without modern technology. This is how people love the tradition. In our country (Azerbaijan) countryside people are like this. But unfortunately urban cities are getting closer to new technology and people are money addicted as everywhere’s. Love from Azerbaijan to our brother Uzbekistan.

  • @peregrination3643

At the risk of sounding like my dad, everyone has purpose in these type of towns. Crime is more of an issue when an industry leaves and no one built anything up in it's place for income and locals also aren't self-sufficient. In this video there are so many crops, livestock, family-built homes, that people are rich a different way. If you're self-sufficient, a GDP-like measurement of wealth doesn't reflect day-to-day living.
I'm from a small ranching town and have many memories of hanging out with older people who liked things simple, so I LOVE your rural videos. It's fascinating how it's a parallel world over in central Asia. Different, yet similar enough to be nostalgic.

very interesting country. Thanks a lot taking us around. CU

Once again, you’ve taken me someplace off my radar. And once again, you’ve shown me the humanity of people even though their culture and environment is much different than mine. Not even National Geographic presents our world as authentically as you do.
It is good to see this aspect of Uzbek life and culture, but I also understand that many Uzbeks leave the country for better opportunities in Russia, Germany, USA, Korea, etc.

This is quality content BECAUSE the journalist is multi lingual and multi cultural. Why does it matter? It matters because he relates to the Russian audience and the western audience as well. He asks questions that Russians already understand to inform the west and vice versa. I am a former Soviet citiem with 17 years In the country and I am LEARNING from this channel. Support this guy not just with your likes but also financially because this is National Geographic level education.

Thank You for another great Video. These people are all happy. You can't miss what you don't have. The more you have in the USA people want to take cause they don't have it. People here just want people to give them what they need without working for it. Not all in America are like that...the further out in the Country the more people help each other & share. You have been here to see. There is greed & hate (why I do not know) I like working outside-mowing the 4 acres-landscaping more with flowers & flowering trees so I have less to mow. I am 72 & I am enjoying my life away from as many people as I can...My grandson lives with me to help
