People nowadays usually miss the point of a music video, but I usually don't enjoy music videos at all. I like to visualize it on my own and think about how the music makes me feel and what I picture when I hear it, but this video is a great little slice of the Beach Boys.
If I remember right, they got told this song was gonna be on Top of the Pops, or whatever that old UK show was called, and they needed a video for this song. So they just spent a lazy afternoon screwing around in Brian's backyard and this was the result.
One of the early videos I saw on MTV was "Life of Illusion" by Joe Walsh, which was just him and a camera crew goofing around in a junkyard. It's fun to watch, sort of like Little Rascals shorts. Sophistication gets tiring after you've seen it a few thousand times.
I was at a Boy Scout camp with my friends this past week. We all enjoy singing, and we all hated the food and the bugs there, so I thought it'd be fun for us all to sing this. I taught everyone the harmonies and whatnot. A week passes, and on the last night (barbeque night) the camped played this song. Well don't you know it, my five guys stood up on the benches and belted it out. It was awesome!
@Alrimate I was meaning to be patriotic. But I did read somewhere that he wanted to make American rock and roll its own Force among the British Invasion. I get around, and she loves you yeah yeah yeah were not the deepest songs. The competition probably made music better.

So glad to read this! I thought that was Derek Taylor but wasn’t sure so I scrolled all the way down to here looking for someone to mention it. Good work, beach gal.
Some very Monkees-like goofiness. Love it. Brian taught the other members of the band how to harmonize. And harmonize they did! They were great. This song is a gem.

This song will always hold a special place in my heart. I just lost someone very special to me, and this song cheered me up. It allowed me to cry not with sorrow, but acceptance, motivation, and thankfulness for all he did for me in the year or so I knew him. He had a heart of gold and always looked at the positives. I miss him so much, but I know he's in a better place.
Please accept my condolences for you lost your beloved one. I lost my husband in 2022 in my birth day month too . If I died I will tell my children to play * Sloop John B* for my Funeral day as my memory from my husband.
This song has an amazing bass part. It's not an exaggeration to say that Carol Kaye's bass on SLOOP JOHN B helped revolutionize electric bass playing in rock/pop music...
I'm going to have to disagree. Paul McCartney was moving bass way beyond this at the same period of time. Listen to Rain by the Beatles, Paperback Writer. As good as this is, the Beatles really were breaking ground by the mile compared to everyone else around at the time.
PFB1994 Both those Beatle songs you mentioned came after Pet Sounds. I will agree with you that McCartney was probably the most influential in bringing electric bass to the forefront. And I also agree that he came up with incredibly melodic lines. But what's great about Carol Kaye's bass on this & other songs on Pet Sounds (and I don't know if Kay came up with the bass lines or Brian Wilson) is that she wasn't just playing passing notes on her way to a root or a fifth. The bass parts were very melodic & very orchestral. And I also know that these bass parts are what inspired McCartney to think of bass playing in a different way. So it's probably more accurate to say that Carol Kaye influenced McCartney, McCartney influenced the rest of the world.
That was the first song that was playing when I went to the hospital to have our first born son. The nurses brought me their radio and turned it on. The Sloop John B was just starting to play. I could not help smiling even though the back labor was agony.

I was on a mission trip with my church, building school houses Jamaica, back in '90. While we were toting cinder blocks, we got a rythm up singing Beach Boys.... Fond memories....😊😊❤️❤️✌️✌️
If there's anything that takes me back to my childhood it's the beachboys!!! Man I miss the beach boys! In my opinion they were an amazing band!... ughhh life seemed a lot simpler back then!
This song will always make me think of summers on the deck with my dad. I can just picture him singing along to "then he took and he ate up all of my corn." He's still around but there are not as much beach boy summers anymore.

they knew how to make perfect songs can't forget God only knows .jesus such a masterpiece always liked the B.Bs till I heard pet sounds from the cover thought it was gonna be circus tunes boy was I wrong album must god God must have dropped album and it fell too earth Brian caught it
Saw the Beach Boys because they were part of a triple bill outdoor 1974 outdoor concert with CSNY as Top Billing ....WOW ... they just returned from a time in India studying Transcendental Meditation and as an example they turned "409" less than 2 minutes ... into a 20+ minute psychedelic masterpiece.
I’m nearly 28 years old, and I LOVE this kind of music! Beach Boys are awesome! Music from the 60’s, even 70’s are good time oldies! People at my age today will never understand why I love this kind of music from the old days, but these songs are timeless! 😎🎵
I’m old and (still) listen to everything - Imagine Dragons, RHCP, Sturgill Simpson, Beach Boys, Jazz, Blues, Stones… music keeps ya young. Never get “stuck” in any genre, never be afraid to embrace the new. 💙
Kokomo is my favorite too Kelly:) I like this song too but before my time, sounds really good but i don't know what it's about othey than it was the worst trip they been on and they just wanna go home!!! Is it originally about coming home from war or what? IDK
This song always makes me feel sad about times that aren't coming back.

I was on a mission trip with my church, building school houses Jamaica, back in '90. While we were toting cinder blocks, we got a rythm up singing Beach Boys.... Fond memories....😊😊❤️❤️✌️✌️
I love this song! The harmonies are sublime
love this song
The look on their faces when heavy set Carl jumps into the pool is a crack-up....oh no @1:35
If there's anything that takes me back to my childhood it's the beachboys!!! Man I miss the beach boys! In my opinion they were an amazing band!... ughhh life seemed a lot simpler back then!
❤
This song will always make me think of summers on the deck with my dad. I can just picture him singing along to "then he took and he ate up all of my corn." He's still around but there are not as much beach boy summers anymore.
my all time number one song of all time. there is nothing like blasting this every time i hear it.it's the best. i still love brian. forever and always. he is still the best.
Shot fifty years ago today in Brian's back yard in the Hollywood hills. Bunch of wild and crazy cut ups.
BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES! FINE SONG.
they knew how to make perfect songs can't forget God only knows .jesus such a masterpiece always liked the B.Bs till I heard pet sounds from the cover thought it was gonna be circus tunes boy was I wrong album must god God must have dropped album and it fell too earth Brian caught it
one of my junior school teachers made us sing this she was involved
with this record somehow
she made us do all the different vocal bits
she was cool
You can't help but think of the sunshine, beach and the sea with a Brian Wilson / Beachboy song. Great 😊
Saw the Beach Boys because they were part of a triple bill outdoor 1974 outdoor concert with CSNY as Top Billing ....WOW ... they just returned from a time in India studying Transcendental Meditation and as an example they turned "409" less than 2 minutes ... into a 20+ minute psychedelic masterpiece.
Sounds like an amazing show. From 1971-1974 they were on fire on stage and in studio. I wasn’t even alive but wish I could have seen them.
I thought it was cool, how this promo film was re-created for "Love and Mercy."
+Greg Heilers right? Pretty accurate too
+Greg Heilers And in color!
It wasn't remade in color. Which was kind of nice.
+Nicole Foster No, was in color
+Scrappy Mckay No, it wasn't. I have the movie. This scene was in black and white.
A great song never goes out of date
We were so lucky to have these songs, these amazing musicians... 😢 🎼🖤
Are you referring to the Wrecking Crew ?
Probably my favorite band of all time. Their music puts me in a good mood
The fact they got together and did this at ANY point is Awesome!
What do you mean? I'm pretty sure they were together ALOT over the years! Touring together constantly and living in the same place..
One of the Best Groups Of Rock.
God Bless Them Always
Thank you so Much.
The beach boys...they are good.... love this song ♥️ I can listen to it over n over my favorite....they have good Music.....👌
fantastic!
I’m nearly 28 years old, and I LOVE this kind of music! Beach Boys are awesome! Music from the 60’s, even 70’s are good time oldies! People at my age today will never understand why I love this kind of music from the old days, but these songs are timeless! 😎🎵
I play in juxbox a am 74
I’m old and (still) listen to everything - Imagine Dragons, RHCP, Sturgill Simpson, Beach Boys, Jazz, Blues, Stones… music keeps ya young. Never get “stuck” in any genre, never be afraid to embrace the new. 💙
This comment renews a sense of humanity for me. Thank you!
love this song and love to see them all having fun
Brian's talent shows here , he takes a folk song and arranges it into something truly memorable and innovative.
Real music from a generation that had respect for America and a great and better way of life than today.
This was the era of the California serial killer. Do you really believe that?
MY FAVORITE BEACH BOYS SONG! kokomo was my first favorite song and they will always warm my heart.
Kokomo is my favorite too Kelly:) I like this song too but before my time, sounds really good but i don't know what it's about othey than it was the worst trip they been on and they just wanna go home!!! Is it originally about coming home from war or what? IDK
Nice to see the entire clip. Thanks.
