  • 5 years ago I stopped my statins
    www.telegraph.co.uk/news/healt...
Since then I have adopted a healthy life style: eating real health food such as meat, fish, eggs, cheese, milk and green vegetables; resistance exercise; adequate sleep; selected nutritional supplements. My cholesterol level is now high again and so I decided to have a heart scan.

I quit statins cold turkey. From day 1, I started feeling better. It’s been 4 months and I have more energy, less pain in body, feel better emotionally and overall feeling healthy since 1991. Statins are dangerous!

I had to have a medical “checkup” 5 years ago, to get medical insurance. Never had one before and hadn’t visited a doctor for many years. Result: cholesterol level normal, everything else from the blood test also normal. Blood pressure high, so I was sent off to a cardiologist. Very thoroughly tested: heart and physical fitness like that of a much younger person; blood pressure high. Was prescribed pills to be taken every day for life. Blood pressure came down dramatically within three weeks. Since then I’ve continued with the medication and also incorporated healthier foods in my diet. Also since about that time I’ve been waking up with muscle pains in my legs that have been getting worse. I thought “Oh, must be because I’m getting old”. But then, just two weeks ago I came across some information about “statins” and noticed that one of my daily pills contains “atorvastatin”. Stopped taking it and immediately the muscle pains stopped! I now feel fitter and more energetic than I have for a long time! (I’m now 80.)

I stopped statins about eleven years ago. I had taken them for about a year and a half before stopping them. Why did I stop them? Because they made me feel terrible: I had a constant numb pain in my head, and my joints felt arthritic (even though I do not suffer from arthritis). My doctor told me that stopping them was very risky. I told him I was prepared to take that risk. Within about a week or so, I started to feel normal again: no more headaches and no more joint pains. My cholesterol has been in the acceptable range ever since.
I eat a LCHF diet. I swear by it. I cut out sugar and sugary foods altogether. I eat a natural diet. I don't touch processed foods.
My short experiment with statins taught me one important thing: that statins are very unhealthy. The doctor can keep his statins; I'll eat butter instead!

My experience with Statins: I have been on statins for nearly two years and have started developing slight head twitches. I spoke to my doctor who said that it was nothing to do with statins but I feel differently. My other symptoms are lack of sleep (when my sleep patterns have always been perfect, broken veins suddenly appearing on my face and chest, visceral fat around my stomach, anxiety, depression and irritability. And lastly, as someone who has been very lucky in the ageing process, as soon as I started taking statins I started to age rapidly. American medics realised there's no link between cholesterol and heart disease years ago.
There is, however, a very strong link between statins and dementia.
Any coincidence that since doctors started prescribing statins to everyone, dementia cases have increased massively??

    • @gayedawn1
      @gayedawn1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Is the link with dementia related to the fact that our brain uses about 25% of our cholesterol. If you use statins does it hinder brain cholesterol function?

    • @joeltunnah
      @joeltunnah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Correlation is not causation. Let’s say for example that statins prolonged the life of someone who would have otherwise died. The number one risk factor for dementia and Alzheimers (not the same thing) is age. Also the baby boomers are all in their 70s and 80s now, when all the old age diseases start kicking in. It’s a huge part of the population. So that’s going to cause a spike in statistics for heart disease, stroke, dementia, etc. There are simply more people living to these ages.
I believe they should exclude anyone age 80 and up from all disease statistic totals.
What you really want to know is, what is my risk at age xx for xx disease.

High cholesterol is not a problem. Even high LDL is not necessarily a problem; it fixes damage and inflammation. The goal should be to lower coronary inflammation by reducing what causes it; primarily processed carbs and high insulin production.

    • @anicca4443
      @anicca4443 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

this, high cholesterol is actually very protective in older age, particularly in women. Much for the reasons Grimr mentions here, they are transporters for all sorts of things to repair damaged and inflamed sites. Particle size of the cholesterol transporters could possibly be an issue, but if you eat healthy these will be of the large buoyant variety which again are protective.
(paleo/keto - basically whole foods, low carb, though more carbs are less problematic if you're decently active since your insulin sensitivity will be higher and glycogen stores depleted therefore you will deal with sugar/insulin in a healthier way)

After 3 months my cholesterol reduced and my BP improved. Nowadays I eat 2 to 3 eggs per day, less carbohydrates, eat more butter, take supplements - magnesium, vitamin D and Omega 3. This condition was getting painful and felt like the skin on my shin was going to split. I read something online about statins causing swelling and as of a week ago stopped my statin intake.I can't believe it ,finally the swelling of both legs has decreased but more impressively, both legs look almost the same size now. Two years ago i made a miraculous recovery from a stroke, where i had lost feeling in the right side of my face and torso, the right arm was a dead weight, was unable to speak coherently for five weeks,so really hope i'm doing the right thing.. Doctors get a kick back from all of the drug companies so they continue to push drugs. Everyone should be doing their own homework on drugs and make their own decision as to taking them or not. People can go to drugs.com to read side effects etc. Then there are the long term studies that prove the side effects are worse than the benefits of statins. Doctors are not God! Just because they write prescriptions does not mean that people really need them and not all Doctors have all of the facts. The right diet, exercise, etc can lower cholesterol by approximately 50%. God provided us humans with everything that we need to survive when drugs were not in the picture. These companies are raking in trillions of dollars at people’s expense. I suggest when people are handed a prescription, 1 should research it BEFORE getting it filled. Just because your Doctor says you need it does not mean that they are good for you!

I had hypertension for the first time in my lifetime a little more than a month ago. I had an annual physical and my blood work came back good and my cholesterol levels were within range because of Lipitor pills which is a statin. I been on it for more than 10 years. In the Philippines, during this pandemic, the government mandates that all seniors age 60 and above stay Inside of the house and I'm 74 next month and was 72 in March of last year when the pandemic cause a lockdown. I'm a former Medic from the Air Force. Being that my diet did not cause my hypertension, admittedly I was not getting enough sleep as well as living a sedentary lifestyle. Combined, I will say that's what led to my hypertension. My BP was 181 over 110. Even though my heart was palpitating and I was lightheaded, my strong body is what saved me. I'm a retired Senior Olympian and silver medalist at senior olympics and gold medals at everything below that and my cousin is Jesse Owens the Olympian and I was a sprinter as well. Before pandemic, I danced every weekend and previously danced on TV in California and that explains why my health was like a young person annually. I was put on meds to bring my blood pressure down. After the third week, I took a chance and stop taking my meds. Two days past and my BP was within range on my Mediterranean Diet I began the day I was diagnosed with hypertension which was three days before I was rushed to the hospital. It was 149 over 80 on the day of my physical. Next day it was 151 over 110. Next day it was 181 over 110. Since my BP was being controlled, I researched statins for the first time and learned of the side effects. Some I was experiencing because I had black liquid stools. I learned that was a sign of beginning liver disease. It could also lead to liver failure. During my exam. They found a cyst on my liver with lots of fluid but no sign of cancer. My kidney also had a cyst but no sign of cancer. I told my wife my doctor wrote my prescription for a statin years ago and never mentioned the side effects. I was upset. I immediately toss them in the trash and my wife was happy. I saw my doctor a week later because my 30 days was up. He was getting ready to write another prescription for blood pressure medicine and I told him I stopped taking them after the third week and my BP is under control. He was happy for me. I also told him I discontinued taking my statins and I am relying on my diet to keep my Cholesterol levels under control. He was surprised but he said okay. My black tarry stools are now solid again and brown which is normal. That's my testimony regarding statins so I totally agree with you sir. Have a happy, healthy, and blessed everyday. 🙋🏾‍♂️👌🏽😇🙏🏾☝🏽

I was struggling with many pains and symptoms, lost 35 lbs without trying so I spoke to my GP and as she said I could give them up if I so chose-I did. No more cramps but then she didn't even take a blood test to check all the symptoms (Rhabdomyolysis?). She did not even mention that in her notes. 17% kidney function left.

Those of you that are worried enough about your ldl levels to take statins need to read a little about the hdl to triglyceride ratio. Mine is usually around a 1 to 1 ratio and I quit taking statins 4 years ago. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

I had a lot of pain and heart problems 6 years ago, after falling down the stairs at home. I had had high blood pressure with medication, having been eating too much sugar for at least 30 years, and quite likely I got a stroke due to the injections and Sirdalud medication, which were given for treating my back pain right after the accident. The main veins of my heart looked alrigt, but some of the smaller veins were 25-90% blocked. I could just walk slowly, but I started little by little to make longer walks. And, I was prescribed statins in addition to the other medication.
After having used statins for some time, I felt miserable. I got all kinds of muscle pain here and there. It was difficult to stand up in the morning. And, at nights I was afraid of dying. In the morning my heart was beating like crazy, if I accidentally streched me just a little while waking up. My doctor did not believe that my heart rate was 400 times a minute for a short period of time (20 secods or so), but he did let me cut down the statins into half that did remove both the fear and crazy beat, but all the muscle and bone pain was still there.
Then, after a few years with miserable nights, I decided to get rid of statins. Right away, I started feeling better. But, the best started happening just two months ago, when I found Dr. Eric Berg's, Dr. Sten Ekberg's, Dr. Jason Fung's, Dr. Dwight Lundell's, Dr. Stephen Pinney's, Dr. Mary Vernon's, Dr. Eric C. Westman's and Dr. Peter Brukner's TH-cam videos about the Keto diet! During the previous years I used to think that I shall never see a happy day again without pain. But, now I do feel great, I have noticeably lost weight, AND, there is no pain!
I am so thankful for all those good people, who have given me information about the Keto life style and intermediate fasting! Everybody should try it. And, I mean everybody! ... Even people with diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure etc. as well as any other person wishing to live a healthy life. It is truly the easiest way to get slim, too.

I had high cholesterol, on a few MOTs recently. I'm 61.
I was told by the doctor (actually the receptionist! 😡) that they were considering "putting me on Statins."
Weirdly, during the first Lockdown, I started walking every day for 30 minutes+ and have since had it tested 2x and they didn't even mention it.
So, I phoned up and asked about it and they said that all my tests were within the "normal" range. I've made zero changes to my diet, so I can only put it down to the walking.
I have no intentions of being "put on Statins."

My dr said I have to take statins & pretty soon I started feeling so sick. I have rheumatoid & fibromyalgia & the conditions flared up. I had nausea, my bowels movements were bad, lost my appetite, had severe headaches & etc. I stopped taking them. Remember one thing statins are one of the most prescribed meds in the world & of course it’s the pharmaceutical companies & dr’s who push you to take it, or their line is do you want to die. When so much money is involved the care more about that than our health

The "bad guy" now seems to be sugar, not fat.I recommend watching "That Sugar Film" by filmmaker Damon Gameau, it contains an animation showing how the body principally burns Glucose sugar and fat as it's fuel and how insulin deals with the excess "other sugars" like Fructose and the damage done by converting these excess sugars into body fat. A diet high in sugar now seems to be the enemy.

Well done for taking personal responsibility for your own health. Unfortunately the medical professionals and "experts" are only ever told about the positive effects of drugs and the damaging effects are left out of the conversation. Most of the drug research is funded by the manufacturers, so there is a huge conflict of interests. Just goes to show that you have to be your own doctor these days as you need to hear ALL of the research to have true informed consent. Same with Vaccines. Once you have all the facts you can quite easily make the right decision, which is usually the opposite of what your doctor would advise you.

I had an ultra sound on my heart in 2018, a few months after my older brother died of heart attack only to find out that my major arteries around the heart were completely clear.
So my high cholesterol hadn't furred up my arteries.
I still have high cholesterol at 62 but I will not take statins again.
My blood pressure is normal as well like it's always been .

Drug companies tell doctors that statins reduce heart attacks by 36 percent based on a study published in the 2008 European Heart Journal. Patients receiving statins reduced their chance of having a heart attack by 3.1 percent, but the patients receiving a placebo only reduced their heart attacks by 2.0 Percent. The difference between 2.0 and 3.1 is 36 percent but the actual reduction is only 1.1 percent.

Stopped statins seven years ago after taking them for ten years. I was slowly dying. Since then I have lost more than two stones in weight with very little effort, regained energy and optimism and, very importantly, I have regained the capability to learn and retain infirmation. I also changed my diet from high grain and low fat to organic where possible, with high-quality saturated fat, e.g., butter, whole milk. My bread consumption is now very low. I eat smaller meals as my body quickly tells me when I have eaten enough. My blood sugar figure is impeccable but my cholesterol level horrifies my GP but then, who wants to live forever? My aches and pains are much diminished. My age? Let’s just say that I can remember sweet rationing.

I wonder if your BP was higher due to your not having eaten? If you fasted and are hungry, it could be that your BP was elevated due to the stress of being hungry? From what I learned tonight from a doctor, elevated blood pressure is not the problem but a SYMPTOM of a problem or it could be situation-related such as (I assume) elevated stress. The doc I listened to said that our BP fluctuates all the time, depending on our activity. Even fear can affect it.

2016, june, I stopped my statins. My cholesterol wasn't very high,215,225, but I had severe muscle pain in both hamstrings. Within 2 weeks, muscle pain was barely noticeable. November 2016, one week before thanksgiving, I got sharp pain in my left calf. Went to emergency room, shortness of breath also, discovered blood clots in left calf, also one in each lung. Read a story on web md about a cardiologist at a teaching college, had a few of his patients that stopped taking their statins, they developed the same blood clots as I did. We were all taking pravastatin, generic for pravachol. I have started back on rosuvastatin, low dose 5mg. Also I now take co q10. Last cholesterol reading was 165.

My sister was a once a day pill atorvastatin taker for 2 years. No more. It wasn't worth the pains in her leg joints to the point of using a cain. She still walks a little slow but without a cain. And the pain has slowly ended.

Thanks for the video. I'm loosing sleep trying to decide if I want to take them or not. I've had high cholesterol since I was young. My dad did too. Apparently it's heredity. My number is 300 now and my Dr is upset that I don't wanna take them. I don't have high blood pressure or anything else. But I'm so paranoid I'll have a heart attack. Ugh....

Was on statins and my liver enzymes went through the roof but doctor just changed the type of statin and then I had major muscle pain and severe depression. Then I started developing Parkinson’s like symptoms so I quit taking them it’s been 3 weeks and my muscle pain has left completely and I’m no longer depressed. My father noted the other day that it’s been a long time since he has heard my laughter

Gave up the 80 mg max daily dose of Lipitor statin 5 years ago and the best thing I ever did. BTW had a heart attack 12 years ago and my cholesterol is steadily falling with every 6 month blood test I take. Don't underestimate the serious side effects of statins. My only regret is that I didn't give up sooner.

I have been researching this since I was prescribed statins last Friday. I won't be taking them. It looks like
1: taking statins just makes it more likely that you will just die of something else, not necessarily live longer, and
2: there is much too much accent on cholesterol levels and not enough on insulin levels. Very few doctors will give you an insulin test even though it is cheap and easy to do.
3: sugar is officially gone from my diet and I went for my first run in 20 years today. I'm 70.
4: the poster seems to be on the Ketogenic diet, which I am looking forward to apart from having to ban potatoes, rice, pasta and bread from my diet.

That's great to read... sounds like you have done some good research, hope you are doing well.
I'm expecting you may have taken to the ketogenic diet quite well, but just leaving a comment to remind you that since you're a runner (possible some resistance exercise too), then you may be able to incorporate more carbs than you think, since your glycogen won't be full all the time and you'll be far more insulin sensitive from the exercise. On heavy workouts you could quite easily have some healthy carbs afterwards (1-4 hours after exercising)

This is why I am here. Information . I was recently prescribed statins and am horrified at the side affects they are current sitting on my dresser. I just can’t seem to make myself take them even though my cholesterol is high. ( genetics, I am Italian and it runs in my family) I don’t want a heart attack or stroke, but I don’t want to feel achy or sick from taking these meds. I truly don’t know what to do

I would be interested to know if you take any supplements such as Vitamin D3 together with K2/7 Menaquinone!? The relatively 'high' 59 score would suggest that Calcium is high in the blood where it should be in the bone

I’ve just quit my statin three days ago. Id only been taking them for 9 months and had gotten such muscle weakness, memory problems, and my A1C rose to 5.7. I am going to try my best to cut carbs and cut out processed foods to keep it in check. I also take prescription Omega-3 to keep my triglycerides down.

Good for you my man. With you all the way on the that! Anyone with any doubt only needs to understand the difference between relative and absolute risk reduction to appreciate that the statin industry "statistics" are bunkum and that in many cases (not all) statins are a gross waste of money.

I was on statins and blood pressure meds and was looking at stints two years ago, switched to a whole food plant based diet and today I am drug free and have reversed my coronary artery disease and lowered my BP to 95 over 60 down from 179 over 98, those are averages but are pretty consistent. I have also improved my digestive issues, migraine and sleeping issues. All my labs come back perfect, I am 56 and have the labs of a 25 year old athlete.

The older you get the more cholesterol you need ...i refused statins about 5 years ago ...in 2014 i had a heart attack and was told i needed a quadruple
by pass which i refused ....because frankly i felt fine and had no angina ...... i still do work and lift heavy things too ..i also had
a mild stroke in 2018 . all i take is a plavix for blood clot prevention and niacin 500 mg so far so good ..you can do well without aches and pains which
stains obviously give ,,,plus the brain fog and weakness .

If you do decide to stop them take care of your diet and exercise. If you take them also take Co-Q10 supplement this is necessary so your muscles can remain strong.

I was on Atorvastatin 80 mg. for 8 months and it totally wiped out my good cholesterol and tripled my bad cholesterol, if I had stayed on it, it would have killed me. All I can say is if you are on a STATIN demand blood tests and keep track of your HDL and LDL.

I came off statins in July 2018, after going to doctor and asking if I needed to be on them after 8 or 9 years. She checked my cholesterol , cant remember what it was, but it was ok to come off statins for a 6 month trial. I went back February 2019, cholesterol was 4.5 and doctor pleased. Also, b/p was very good. I was originally prescribed Simvastatin as my cholesterol was 7.5. I had no discomfort or pain when on them.
A friend who is on Avostatin asked me if I'd noticed anything different since coming off statins. "Yes" I replied. I'm sure my brain immediately became less foggy, and short term memory improved.

@@Rahhva._ My doctor is desperately trying to put on a statin and I will not have it any cost. She gave me my results. They're extremely high. My LDL is 12.4 and I think it's because of the amount of cream I put in my coffee daily, I can ease my diet but I will not back down from my doctor. The body knows what it's doing, It doesn't make cholesterol for nothing, it has it's reasons. You made the right decision.

I quit it as well and my Cholesterol level went through the roof and I am zero concerned about it. I do Keto with intermitting fasting since a year which means I am on a extremely low carb diet, no sugar no sweets, bread, pasta, rice etc. Its madness as we need Cholesterol for almost everything in our body and Statins actually halves the cholesterol. This is insane. Doctors need to get more updates on new research and studies.
