The evaluation + engine lines tells you if the move is good or not. Marking a move as good, best, or excellent is just a reflection of the evaluation, and isn't that useful without seeing the evaluation and engine lines.
I think if you want to get better more quickly at chess you should ditch game review anyways. Looking at an analysis board with 3+ lines is more useful in general. Game review gives that dopamine tho. Best thing is to analyze yourself before using an engine
Hello, Could you consider making a course for players above 2000 fide one day? I'm sure you have lots of interesting tips & advice for this range. Even if this audience is not as large as beginners/intermediate players, I'm sure it will interest many people. Some of your videos on YT like when you analyze your own games, use your mnemotechnic rules & and give insights about your thinking process when playing are awesome and I would love to see 20 or 30 games like that. This is incredible! Thank you GM Igor! But please answer WHY you think the computer disagrees with you. At the 2:05 mark for example, after the exchange of bishops, the black Queen is activated. But yet the computer thinks for white to exchange bishops is the best move. WHY do you hypothesize the computer thinks that and disagrees with you?
I’ve learned more from you in the last 3 months than all my time playing chess. Your right about the computer chess engines being humbling. Any time I get over 90% accuracy I feel I did good. Also your right about the engine doing moves that dont make sense without explanation. Sometimes I just use the engine for the next 5 moves just to see why it did a particular move. Then I just go back and play the moves I want. The engine has done some amazing checkmate moves that I would have never seen. This is the absolute best chess instruction channel. Thanks
I like that you teaching in a very human way, thinking all thoose mistakes we make as human. I don't mean a specific move or a specific blunder, but the psychology behind humans. Some of us overcommit to analyze, some of us wanna win too hard. so on.. And if we are tired all of us makes very stupid blunders.
The way how computers approach chess is completely different from how humans approach it. We humans approach chess through intuition, creativity, skill, and knowledge. But the reason why computers do so well in chess is by the fact that they are able to calculate millions of positions per second without possesing any human weaknesses.

This Guy really helped me improve my game...In one year I gained 350 elo and the last 30 days I am winning almost 58% of my games. Played 120+ games in this time
I like to study my blunders or study if there was a better move the computer engine is great tool. If the game is 90 or higher it’s not really worth studying but under that you should study some of the engine moves it improves your accuracy it helps with middle game and end game you shouldn’t worry about the engines opening principles because even not so great opening with the right moves in the mid and end game outcome can over come bad decisions in your openings. The engine will not teach you brilliant or great moves that should be studied by doing puzzles and gone over games form every generation of Masters. Developing skills is practice of principles of why move is made and why move is bad it’s based on tactical and strategic skills I great knowledge of why you develop in certain situations. The one thing is the engine tells you moving your piece form getting taken is bad can be two things the development of other pieces or the overall position of the board where you could have developed something more useful, I great tool is if you feel something is good move by sacrificing it well go ahead and do it.
I once missed a mate in 12. I was totally kicking myself for that! (jk, but I have had that happen. I just realize that I am a mere human and don't normally calculate 12 moves ahead.) In reviewing my games, I have learned that it is OK sometimes to say no to what the computer recommends. Why? Well, Stockfish assumes you are playing against Stockfish, basically. I like to change the settings to rapid, classic, and correspondence games in my rating range (+/- 200 or so). I also incorporate what I learn from that, and sometimes I see that one move that Stockfish says is maybe 3rd of 4th best has given players in my range more difficulty to play against, and that is valuable information that Stockfish doesn't incorporate. I think that Stockfish calls the c5 move by black an inaccuracy is because it relieves the tension in the center that currently benefits black. Looking at what Stockfish suggests, it clearly sees the better ideas at this point as aggressive attacking on the king's side and playing a3 to keep the bishop from going to b4, which again helps maintain the tension. For the record, I would be happy to have Magnus Carlsen critique my games!

When playing I simply do not see what I perceive as obvious when following your teaching (or that in a book). Why can I not translate intellectual understanding into a game? It is so frustrating!! Engines are great, but "+7" sometimes means "if you can find series of only moves in time, you will win". "+0,7" often means "you have an extra pawn, which is enough to win 95% of such positions".
Some computer evaluations that are not that useful are like "Bozo, you can capture this knight. After you defend 20 threats you'll be fine, this is an easy way to win a piece"
A great example of the top stockfish line not always being the best move from a human perspective is the blackburne gambit, where the top line is Nxd4, creating an annoying pawn on d4 that doesn't let white develop their b8 knight naturally, while after simply castling instead white completely refutes the opening, just up a tempo with no compensation.

It is true that I usually ignore the inaccuracies and mistakes because they can become overwhelming and I may not get much out of it. The blunders though, I study the alternate lines. Still, I have to admit, I can't always see why or what else I could have done.
One of his BEST videos for those of us trying to use engines to improve our games; much he says I , after time and frustrating review and angst, had already concluded regarding engine analysis versus my own, but nice to have a GM confirm my conclusions. . Only reason I can see to move Black kf6, as the computer recommended, is because you can brute force, trading your knight and light square bishop for a knight and two pawns, giving your queen a really nice central square, and then kg5 threatens checkmate and your attack is looking ok. Just get a bunch of activity in the center of the board for a slight loss in material, but what do I know. I'm not very good lol Aha see, I forgot to look at the whole board and that just doesn't work at all, thanks to blacks light square bishop also guarding e4. Would just blunder my queen. I need to slow down and actually look
I apologize if this is rude to say, but you do realize a Knight is N in algebraic chess notation, right? K would be King and even then, it would be capitalized.

Feel free to turn up the heat a little and mention how they are pay to play garbage thats basically ripping off this charitable site lichess that we all love. And more so all you here from a lot of these streamers is how great it is when it really is inferior to lichess and you have to pay also
As newbie I feel like the rule: to take is a mistake needs just a bit more explanation…in particular to take is a mistake (if the recapture by your opponent moves a stronger piece forward)…this could probably be an entire video since I never know when I’m ready and end up playing defensively and inevitably blundering and losing. NOT A FUN WAY TO PLAY….then you just want to quit.
It is only really applying to the edge cases where there isn't anything tactical, but you have to decide if a capture will leave you weakened or rather improve your structure. It is basically saying that of those two, it is more likely to weaken your position. This is of course only a rule of thumb, and good players break general rules all the time when the situation calls for it. The important takeaway is that if you do not find tactics, if you do not find a positional idea, if you do not find some crazy plan, taking is usually going to leave you vulnerable. Use it as a tiebreaker when considering those kinds of moves or at least keep it in mind, and otherwise, just play the board. And if you want to just avoid those annoying miscalculations, do and study some chess puzzles: most games are decided by tactics, and learning their patterns is probably the best way to improve fast as a new player.
A stupid rule I’ve given myself that helps is “When you feel like you’re forced to play a bad move, don’t” it’s rare that there is absolutely nothing that can be done. Maybe there’s a sacrifice that must be made but you should be able to do something to take advantage of the strengths of your position.
Theres alot of chess channels that help you get to 1400-1600 elo, but yours is the only one that really helps the intermediate players reach 2000. More of this kind of content please!

it does give engine lines though, so if you go through those lines it kind of tells you why some moves are good or bad

I find a lot of times that the "best" move is a move that a human would NEVER play unless they were a 2800 player
