The thermal battery in the🙂 Oyster is the main point because they use a phase changing material that can store much more temperature ( thermal storage ) than normal ice . Oyster is also using a super effective insulating core material called Fumed Silica . The Oyster would perform just the same without any ice. The phase change material technology is also used in hot water tanks where for example tanks with 100 gallon hot water can store the same thermal energy as a 400 gallon tank . This is cool technology . virtually . Yeti is a nice design but no much else.

compare the yeti tundra 35 vs that. the soft cooler isn't a fair comparison

But comparative size makes a difference. At not much bigger than the yeti this cooler is far more efficient. A hard sided yeti will be much better of course but it’s also much larger than the oyster.

Does the lid on the oyster stop itself when opened or does it flop all the way backwards if you let it go?

Does not flop over. Can be Opened either side

The whole point of an oyster is to not use ice 🧊 you’re supposed to use their “thermal battery”

That’s not the case actually… In fact, I found that their ice pack replacements aren’t as efficient as ice. However, if you put cold cans in the Oyster without ice, they stay cold for a good 48 hours vs. the Yeti which keeps them cold for just under 24…

I don't think their thermal battery is the whole point. It's merely a suggested option. Ice is just as effective, with the only drawback being melted water.

@@qy05 read their website of course you can use ice but it’s a “no ice needed” cooler and it’s why the gel packs are included. It’s optimized for use with ice packs

Yeti was kept zipped… Oyster can open from either side and stays in position.
