Thank god it was only the camera disaster. Oh the sound, every single time I hear 1 second of an RD250 with spannies it it takes me straight back. Thank you once again for allowing me to travel back in time to the early 80's, it makes me feel 17 again, young, stupid and addicted to the smell of two stroke oil, so many blasts through the countryside at 8,000rpm with "me mates". "Them were the days".
I tried all sorts to the sound of the exhausts, taped a Bluetooth mic to the number plate, hung the camera upside down off the indicators but it was too distorted to use
I had a RD400DX in the exact same colour with I bought new in 1979 although I ended up repainting it back gold in the JPS Lotus colours. I recall the first time a friend took me on the back of his RD250 and the massive increase in pull as it hit around the power band at around 5000 rpm. Loved those bikes.
Exactly" I was waiting for the engine to burn a hole through the pistons, I can't stand it when you want to watch and listen to a certian bike vid and the vlogger spends the first half moaning about go pro's or their incompetence in filming, but to head line the vid as a disaster is tantamount to trade description fraud, welcome to the age of virtual reality we're the blured lines are tipping the unreal into our reality!!! Not a bad stretch of road, but to be honest some of the lesser roads around here could do with some work. Roll on local elections when they tend to get repaired!
Great sounding engine mate . Well done its sounds fantastic . Every thing worked out in the end for you and i am so happy for you. Greatjob now enjoy it . 👍👍👍👍

looks like a fun ride ! Have you been checking the plugs for mixture ? Dont worry about missing videos , I sure all of us are staying tuned and hoping the issues are sorted , but above all enjoy and stay safe !
I'll follow up with how it's running and issues that I have. Having to keep the revs in check (I'm doing my best) makes it a little difficult to hear and feel on the road how cleanly the engine is revving. I will open the next video with how the plugs look, thanks for the idea

This model of RD250 is burned into my memory, even the colour !.. My younger brother had one which he bought just before he was 17. Obviously he hadn't yet passed his test, but he'd been fettling the carbs and asked me to take it for a test run.. I agreed, but unfortunately he forgot to mention that it had a slow puncture in the front tyre, which proceeded to go almost flat on a long sweeping corner at speed !.. It was definitely 'squeaky bum time' and I still don't know to this day how I managed to keep that bike on it's wheels.. I trundled it home for the last mile or so on it's barely inflated front tyre and gave him the rollocking of a lifetime !!.. On the upside, he had got the carburation absolutely spot on and the bike ran really well !..
I love that story, I'm so pleased the bike brings back 'happy' memories for so many people. If your brother can remember how he set the carbs up, that would be useful to know
@@RepairandRideout I greatly doubt he'll remember now, it was almost exactly 40 years ago and I know for certain that he's been nowhere near any bike, never mind an RD, for 35 of those years !.. To be fair he was only 16+ years old so it could well have been a lucky accident.. rather like me surviving the bl**dy test ride !..
Looking and sounding great mate . When you say hesitant do you mean at 4k revs on half throttle cos it sounded like my old RD350B did when you did that .The only way I could cure it was to go back to standard exhausts, mains and filters although I left the boyesen reeds in ! I'm sure you will sort it cos you're much more competent than I ever was 😀 looking forward to next one cheers and good luck👍
@@RepairandRideout if you have fit the expansion chambers and not altered the carbs at all I’d go up a couple of sizes on the main jet for a start and work from there
Fantastic, just make sure its not running lean, it sounded like the revs were hanging a bit when coming down the revs, i think thats what they do when running a bit lean, did you upjet for the pipes? my 350lc had allspeeds i had to upjet by one size to run a bit richer to be on the safe side, lovely bike you've done a cracking job
@@RepairandRideout That's quite a jump on the mains! I had 350LC which was highly ported and run a set of 'chambers' I went from 190 to about 320 on the mains which is a huge jump, I doubt that you need to go quite so large on the mains. having said that its best to be too large and work you way down. Personally I'd also ask on the forums, someone will be able to guide you. To me it does sound a bit 'gurglely' i.e rich but is hard to say because I don't know how far the throttle was open so there is no way of knowing which fuelling circuit was in use.
+30 mains is enough then one notch up or down on the needle clip if your not happy with midrange pick up, raise needles by lowering clip one notch, more fuel, lower needle, less fuel, to much hesitancy or burbble midrange is to much fuel, limp or lack of power responsiveness bag of wind not enough fuel, yours sounds good maby a tad rich, wich dosent hert whilst running it in re-avaluate it after fully reving it out after run in period, you can get a good idea at any revs at normal running temprature, if you maintain those revs for a minute say 4-5gear or all or any, then cut the engine wilst simultaneously dipping the clutch till you come to a stop, then check plugs , dry light brown good. Make sure ignition timimg is correct needs retarding at least one degree if skimming heads checking squish clearance tolerances as well.
A no cost tune up is to take out head gasket for sealant and install 2-3 barrel base gaskets, it raises the exhaust, & transfer ports by 1/2 to 3/4mm which gives a slight gain in revs & power for free 😉 if you do this in conjunction with no air filter and box, put some wire gause over carb inlets or rubber sleeves, bend back induction reed valve stopes 2mm each, take out baffles, better still race pipes at a cost though, with' a extra +5main jets on top of +20's, you have a bargain basement road race tune😮
