  • Torås Fort, on the southern tip of the island Tjøme in Færder municipality, is a historical gem that offers a glimpse into Norway’s coastal defenses. Originally begun in 1939 as part of the Oslofjord fortification, which included Mågerø Fort, Bolærne Fort, and Rauøy Fort, Torås Fort was not completed until the German occupation of Norway during World War II.
The fort, which was finished in November 1941, became an integral part of the German ‘Festung Norwegen’ and the Atlantic Wall, boasting four 15 cm L/50 cannons from Bofors, capable of reaching distances up to 19.5 kilometers. The architecture of the fort is ingeniously camouflaged within the natural landscape, with buildings strategically placed in the crevices between the rocks, blending seamlessly with the rugged terrain.
After the war, the fort continued to serve a military purpose, primarily for educational and training activities by the Coastal Artillery until its decommissioning in 1999. Today, Torås Fort stands as a testament to the region’s military history, with three of its original cannons still in place for visitors to see. The fourth cannon has been restored and is now displayed at Oscarsborg Fortress near Drøbak.
The fort’s 400-acre grounds, once a hub of military activity, have been repurposed and are now open to the public, offering a serene escape with panoramic views of the neighboring island Hvasser and the Oslofjord to the east. It’s a place where history and natural beauty converge, providing a unique experience for those interested in Norway’s wartime past and the scenic splendor of the Vestfold coast.
