Super Mario Bros. TAS vs. RTA former World Record (

- Update with new WR (4:55.913): • Super Mario Bros. TAS ...
Comparison video of the current world records of SMB.
TAS (Tool-Assisted Speedrun, human playing with emulator assistance, not in real time) WR: • NES Super Mario Bros. ...
RTA (Real Time Attack, human playing in real-time) WR: • (4:56.878) Super Mario...
The timing difference makes RTA record seem shorter than TAS record, but still, it's close enough.
TAS saves time in 1-2, 4-2, 8-1, 8-2, 8-3, and 8-4, using faster acceleration, going through the wall, flagpole glitch, etc.
TAS is NOT programming.
None of the two runs uses "cheats" of any kind. If you have questions, watch darbian's tutorial: • [Tutorial] Super Mario... - เกม
Guy: Does very precise jumps and times things very well
TAS: *goes through wall*
and now they go through the walls (search somewes WR speedrun)
It's not even that for me, I mean the TAS made about 10+ fast acceleration pipe jumps and backward bumps because it's still gonna make the frame rule, it's mad
I can do more.

TAS Bot did flipping Wall Jumps on 8-2
Imagine being so good at Mario you are almost exactly the same as the most optimal frame perfect inputs by a computer
2 yr edit: I know the tas is made by a person but the computer is the one that inputs the button presses
Well, theoretically optimal frame inputs, it hasn't been proven they are perfect
Well nearly 3 seconds behind, but yeah still pretty crazy
Well they are technically inputs by a player, TAS just executes them
Also, why that profile picture? :/
@@biohazard9215 okay technically a human input the commands beforehand, but that's like someone telling their friend how to get from their house to yours. It was still your friend/the machine that performed the inputs.
Also because an AI generated it for me and I liked it so I'm using it as my profile picture
It’s a good pic

Darbian wall jumps in 8-4 aswell!
@@NotBroihon That was run from 2016, the TAS from HappyLee was from 2011. A 5 year standing difference! We might be getting 4:54 later this year who knows!
@@vu5523 yeah, 4:54 seems to be very likely. This is an insane development. Not to mention that the TAS is tied up to 8-4 now...

3:31 WTF how did he wall climb?! 😱
Tampatec pixel perfect and frame perfect inputs. Easy for tas, but nearly impossible for tas.
Skycloud I think you mean humans
4:36
When you jump at a wall, Mario's position updates every frame based on his momentum until he reaches the wall, (I don't know the actual numbers but for example's sake) say he's moving 4 pixels forward every frame, if he's 1 pixel away from the wall, on the next frame he'll move forward and end up 3 pixels inside the wall, and then the game will detect he's in the wall and on the next frame after that, it will try to eject him.
The game has 'floor detection' every 16 pixels vertically (which is why there aren't any slopes and every block is the same size) so if the player jumps into the wall at a 16 pixel boundary, clips into the wall, and IMMEDIATELY jumps on that same frame before the wall ejection happens, the game will consider Mario to be standing on the very edge of a 'floor' but that's more than enough to jump off of, so you can do a frame-perfect jump off the wall.
If you play the game enough you can actually experience this by running and jumping at a wall over and over again, most of the time Mario will just hit the wall and slide down it smoothly because he impacted the wall in such a way that he didn't clip inside it, or, he didn't clip inside it at a 16 pixel interval, so the game ejected him without him touching a floor. BUT, occasionally you'll see him hit the wall, catch against it briefly, and THEN fall, that's when a wall clip happened, the brief catch on the wall was when a wall jump is possible.
tasvideos.org/GameResources/NES/SuperMarioBros.html#Walljump
think of the 8-4 walljump, but a lot more frequent. Extreme pixel and frame perfect inputs.

Thanks for your comment. I got inspired by your comparison, and realized some people might be interested in watching it, so I made my own version. :)
Tool assisted? Explain what tools were used then to make it easier. Gameshark?
Frame advance and savestates. Frame advance lets you play the game frame-by-frame (really, REALLY slowly) which allows you to do all kinds of crazy shit that you see in every TAS. Savestates allow you to save the game's current state anytime, and also allow you to return to that state anytime. This means that every time you fail to do something, you can always retry without having to restart the entire run
Lord Marcus norma ya tejidos
These two vids need to be overlayed onto each other. So we can see exactly how close they really are.
Josh McElroy if you see my other comment, it explains you can overlay them yourself by doing Cross Eyed 3D. A bit finicky, but it works.

For those wondering, the time difference is because of the way the end of levels transition - they act as "buses" that "depart from the station" at set times. So although Darbian is often a bit slower, they "catch the same bus" to the next level.
To all extents and purposes, Darbian's run is 'perfect' under the current strats. It is ridiculous accuracy and consistency.

This was interesting to see because it shows how the frame rule comes in to play. Darbian lost time on every level, but due to the frame rule he was "tied". Very interesting.
he was only tied on some levels. he lost a frame rule on many levels.
Oh shit I forgot about that. I thought the editor lined up the level starts or something!
The OP *did* edit the TAS video so that it was in sync with the RTA video.
hmm I guess that is why I cannot understand most of the things that happen. What is the frame rule?

Is this a serious question?
Michael Sabsabi No. Why would I ask that if no one mentions hitboxes?
***** I said no.
MMJZ dude it's a joke .-.
the hitbox for an obstacle is the area defined such that, should the player enter it, damage is dealt.
I think all hitboxes in this game are rectangles, because it simplifies calculations.

I like how there didn't need to be a resync after 1-1 because despite the slight time difference, the frame rules kept them on pace.
It looks like they completed at the exact same time but still there is difference of 2.83 seconds in time how ?
HaSeeB MiR He paused the TAS version every level, if it got faster than the RTA version. This is make a better comparison.
look on the TAS timer it turns red every time he pauses that video (between levels) the level difference shows up on top and is added to the overall difference at the bottom.
The TAS is actually gaining a little time each level, but the videos are re-synched at the beginning of each level.
No, it's re-synched by the game itself. The game only allows a gameplay length of each level to be a multiple of 21 frames. You can search "21 frame rule" for more information.
OK, you are also right. Indeed, every level is re-synched even if there is actual difference in time.
Would it be possible for a human to get the wall clip in the beginning?
Theoretically, it's possible
Yes, but extremely difficult.
yes, but it would require many tries sinse this is from an ALL in one run
MarshMallow Mate Anything a TAS can a human can. But the TAS has the advanrage of retrying.
The Diaz Not quite, TASes do utilize precise inputs that are impossible to replicate on a controller, like tricks that press both left and right (or up and down) at the same time. Not to mention, certain RNG manipulation.

i like how the TAS noise is in the left ear and real human in the right
"I definitely pulled a muscle there."
3:31 tas literally just executed 4 frame perfect wall jumps man im dead 💀💀💀
Note that after each level they edited the TAS video to pause until the exact moment where Darbian started the level. Yes it was close, but unlike the video, it was 2 seconds apart rather than the couple frames we saw in the video.
What is the difference betwen tas and rta ?
Stevinho17
RTA (Real Time Attack) is a human playing the game in real time, like what you see darbian doing on the right.
TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun) is when someone goes into an emulator, frame by frame, recording theoretically perfect inputs. A TAS is supposed to show the theoretical best time possible.
My right ear kinda enjoyed it
So, correct me if I'm wrong, but the only way that anybody can get a better time than Darbian is to either activate glitches in 1-2 and 4-2 (which might not be humanly possible) or to have a quite literally perfect run in 8-4?
That record is his forever, isn't it?
Darbian has already done most of the things that are humanly possible. Some tricks are just too hard.
the 1-2 and 4-2 clip are sub-frame perfect if I recall, the additional flagpole glitch at 8-1 and 8-3 are not humanly impossible to set up efficiently, and you need to have lightning fast reflexes to improve 8-4,so the record is gonna be darbs for at least a few years
Happy Lee if anyone was to break the record, it would be Darbian. Though seeing these, I just might take a crack at the record and see if I can replicate any of this
+Heather W It is only a matter of time before someone decides to finally attempt to grind out a run closer to what the TAS looks like using the wall skip glitches.
Even if the accuracy of such a trick is incredibly low, It will be done eventually after enough people attempt it. [Or some set up is discovered for it to make it more reliable]
Heather W actually someone is gonna beat his score in ten years or so because, did you know that our seconds are actually going slower per year? This is because you know how when you spin, when you put your arms out it slows you down. But putting them on your chest makes you spin faster. Its like that for earth. Our buildings we made actually slow down the earth! So the more building we make on ground, the slower earth spins, and the slower time is. so actually, world records we have today probably aren't the REAL world records. It really could've been a record that was set 50 years ago.
How is the time difforence 2 seconds he hit at same time
This is really great! I really mean it, and by and about what!Admiration for youYour videos!
3:32 early wall jumping!
When you play “Player Vs. Computer”
why did darian jump at second warp pipes?
That total prayer jump through Bowsers hammers was such a perfect way to cap off that run. This run was literally just beaten by the same guy just recently BTW.
Nobody:
Darbian: I don't even know what Jelster means
*BowSeR:eXests*
Mario: four, take it or leave it.
why when tas is ahead the rta run loads faster 3:06 4:17 is that what the time difference is?
The video has been edited so that both runs start each level at the same time, for easier comparision.
There is also a "21 Frame Rule" in the game. After each level, the game can only continue to the next level every 21 frames. So if the TAS beats a level on frame 1 and RTA on frame 20, both of them have to wait up to 21 before the next level continues. So that's another reason why it would seem that the TAS is ahead by more.
Tip: Cross your eyes 'til both footages join together, then enjoy watching *2 Marios* in the same level.
Peach: Do you think you can come over?
Mario: B there in 5
Monday 8th of April TH-cam algorithm show me that
Congratulations 👏🎈
its very interesting that despite the limit we pushed so far
we still have something to improve
I dont think this is a fair comparison, because he is using an NES controller and the TAS is doing a (correct me if im wrong) fast accelaration glitch, which cannot be done on a NES controller.
Ahh did you pause the TAS at the level transitions so they would sync better?
Yes, some of them, that's where the time difference comes from.
Happy Lee you know this kinda ruined the purpose of the video right?
How is rta clock off but they are mirror rta is ahead
Wait why did darbian do the backwards jump when the wall clip is known to be better?
It looks like that TAS needs some tweaking to incorporate some of the RTA strats to shave off a little more time here and there.
It was recorded in 2011, have there been any improvements made since? With a game this popular I would assume there have been progressions in the past 5+ years.
A Hedtke nope this tas time still wr
Rsps Vids - then like I said, I saw probably a dozen places where what was done in this RTA run was slightly more efficient and might be used to shave off at least a few more hundreds, or even perhaps tens of seconds altogether.
A Hedtke such as? You must be more familiar with the game than me, because I found none.
CScottyW - There were several points in the runs were the TAS was ahead by a second or more, and somehow in the RTA he manages to close that gap.
It is the strategies in those particular scenarios that might prove to have some improvements in the TAS.
Not talking about entire stage splits here, but 5 to 10 second blocks of play where the RTA manages to outperform the TAS.
No, there were none.
The guy in the video is Darbian, He's an amazing player!
Go to his channel and watch his speedruns, are incredible
Why is the guy on the right loading levels faster?
How is that 2 seconds faster they started and finished at the same time?
Whenever the TAS gets ahead the left screen gets paused for a few 10th of a second so that the two runs are in sync. Note the time difference in the middle of the screen.
2:11
Why does Darbian jump? Couldn't still save a frame rule?
Audi It’s harder (and not any faster) to turn around at that part in real time.
Does he lose some time at 4:07? It looks like the block stops his horizontal momentum but idk if that's avoidable w/o TAS. Sorry I'm new
No he doesn't. There's a thing in SMB1 called the frame rule. Basically, the game checks if you've finished a level every 21 frames. So let's say it checks on frame xxxxxx01 and frame xxxxxx22, if you actually finish the level on frame xxxxxx08 you'll still have to wait for frame xxxxxx22 before it goes to the next level. That's why you only see time increments of 0.35s in this video (or multiples of that), except for the 8-4 level where frame rule doesn't apply.
At 4:07 Darbian does that bonk on purpose for whatever reason (not sure why exactly, but he does it in every single run) but avoiding that bonk wouldn't save a frame rule anyway. You can see that the TAS does save a frame rule in this level, but TAS uses additional strats like the way it gains speed at the beginning of each level by jumping backward (which is doable to some extent by humans, but not as perfectly as the TAS does it). To my knowledge no human being has ever managed to save that framerule yet, so it's not likely to see this improvement included in runs anytime soon.
Oh, I was curious and searched for Darbian's old pastebin which has additional info about that bump in 8-3:
"**Q: Wait, he totally messed up in 8-3! He bumped into a block before hitting the flagpole! I could've done that better!**
A: Unless you're a TAS-bot, no, you couldn't've. Darbian has to stop
there so that he doesn't land on the flag while the timer has a 3 at the
end of it, which would've triggered 3 fireworks and lost him
considerable time. If you are a TAS-bot, though, you can finish the
level with 244 instead of 242 through some much harder fast acceleration
strats."
pastebin.com/Gyg1XA6U
thanks man that explains a lot!
So thats why the tas bot couldnt do the flag trick in 8-3. Thank you
It still can, but it would result in 3 fireworks.
There's only 1 Koopa on Darbian's screen at 4:35 , but the TAS shows 2 - what caused the other Koopa not to spawn for darbian's playthrough?
At 1:24 tas seems to not take any damage from the piranha plant being that low over it which gets me thinking if he’s a hacker or not
No hacks, the hitbox of the plant is much smaller than the sprite.
