Just my thought I could be wrong, but if it's a possible differential issue, it would have been better to disconnect, lift up the tandem axles, and maybe repower the load. Because he could damage the tandems even more than they are now.
I would have got some oil and drove it there and saved that tow truck fee it wouldn't have been any difference of him towing it unless the gears was broken
What happens with the what happens when you have a full loaded trailer breakdown like that can they tow the trailer or or did you have to leave it in the middle of the intersection thing and somebody else pick it up?

If he wouldve it wouldve snapped the drive shaft and blow the transmission as well. Not worth it to save a buck
