That shows Ola has real confidence in his own Solar brand. He is not afraid to compliment direct competitors.
Something about Charvel's man.. I have an Aristides, Ibanez Prestige, and a Charvel Pro Mod and the Charvel just speaks to me like no other.
Same can be said for old school Jackson's.
Pre 2K Charvel and Jacksons, but not the fender strat copy ones, the oldskool 80s shredders with slanted pickups are the best.

The neck on my DK24 is the best of them all. Really outstanding.

I’ve never liked the pre worn guitars. The clear coat doesn’t stay on the guitar while the paint fades away.
The reason why relic’ed guitars are a thing. You get to have a worn look that may be super cool to you, and it’ll last as long as the clear coat will.
It's like buying a new car, but the odometer says "50 thousand miles". Like it has stories, but it hasn't lol
It depends who good the "relicing" is, most of them are just too neat paint chips or paint sanding that doesn't really look authentic. Fano guitars are the best at "relicing" guitars in my opiniion.
Highway One has a mat finish that comes off real nice!

Literally can get a standard Charvel san dimas and have the same specs lol.
its the same with the evh brand guitars, the evh striped frankenstrat copy is about $1000 but the plain colour relics cost about $1600

I'm totally with you. Relics are stupid but the price is fair on this and the Charvel's are really great.
It breaks up the minimalism of the all-black guitar with wood's lighter color. That being said, I would like to see a lighter relic - even if this one is already toned down from Frederik Danhage's signature. But it's not bad and I wouldn't mind owning one.
Both the JB and the 59 use alnico 5 magnets. Sounds good.👍
My first guitar was a charvel with a Floyd rose and a single humbucker. Love that guitar wish I still had it

Unfortunately, Charvel’s whole selling point is 80’s styles and specs.

The roasted maple neck and rolled fingerboard are sick, right 🤘🏻
Re 4:29 that's probably spot-on. I find the closer the pickup is to the bridge (so further away from the body-neck joint), the brighter it sounds while if its hole is routed more towards the neck, it'll be darker.

Thanks for this, Ola! In short order, you explained the "sonic essence" of this Charvel model! I have an earlier iteration with an ALL ASH body (satin charcoal nitro finish) and a plain Maple neck w/ Ebony 'board...pretty much the same in other respects. You nailed the observation about the bridge p'up placement...great for getting the V/H "Brown Sound", too! It's one of the more "tonally versatile" Guit's in my arsenal, for sure!! 🤘😆
I should put a Crunch Lab in my San Dimas. digging that pickup

I am on the opposite side, I like relics, but these cheap stencil relics looks like shit imo, similar to cheap China relics for $200.
My Fender Highway One is 12 years in and is getting great NATURAL wear because ..... I play the hell out of it!!

Ola I just picked up ab1.7htpb , the pink and purple 7 string w the single coil neck pickup, so stoked to own a solar!!
Love the guitar another reason I feel like it's throaty and aggressive is the lack of tone pot, when it's gone theres a decent amount of resistance taken out of the circuit, so theres more actual pickup signal technically
Ola ... just joined... thanks for the review on the San Dimas... I purchased one with a 1 piece quilt trans blue top... beautiful... after plek, setup, and a gator case, it was 2k... best instrument I've ever owed...
Question: did the fine tuners on the floyd seem "grimy"... they dont seem well machined, or "smooth" when adjusted... my gotoh floyd, on a 90's Jackson Soloist, is very smooth... also, is that the multi radius neck? And yes stainless frets.
Glad you and Glenn are friends, his reviews have informed many of my choices recently... btw... make that tele with a floyd... I'd be interested.
And as budget guitars go... I'm swearing by the Firefly... got two sparkle tele with h/h and two point trem... specs are off the chart for such a bargain... and right out of the box, In Tune... just saying... peace
I'm going to swap the bridges... the fr1000 has the radius shims in it... I'll swap those as well...
I have a san dimas from a couple years ago and it's one of my favorite guitars in my collection.
Don’t usually like JB’s but that Charvel makes it work.
Love Charvel and the Specs look great, but I don’t care for Fake Relic. All my guitars have my wear and tear marks from playing 🙂
Or in my case, my 2 year old denting the face of my guitar with the end of a vacuum handle…

I wish Charvel and Fender did an Inland Empjre model. They’re both located there, not in San Dimas/Malibu. It’s also home to the biggest metal community in Southern California.

I can't say for sure because I haven't tried one but to me, it looks like a relic body with a brand new neck. Only the body looks relic.
I know that has to be an awesome guitar. Love my San Dimas. Playing thru synergy drect into a Mark 5 and 2003 Recto 412 cabinet.

I have one reliced guitar, and the relicing looks absolutely real.
This one, to me, just doesn't....
Great looking guitar. But... you can buy a normal San Dimas or SoCal for far less and relic it yourself.
I love it. That is my kind of guitar. I love the JB in the bridge and the Floyd. I also really like a strat feel. I'm going to gold my hand up here and say that I'm a fan of relic guitars. I get why people hate them, but I love playing them.

Not a relic fan...but Charvels are just pure rock machines. My absolute favourite for my taste in 80's metal.
That guitar sounds great. I've wanted a Charvel Pro-Mod San Dimas for a while now. Maybe some day.

I don't really care for relic guitars and this one is not much different. I wonder however, what a "modern" take on a relic paint job would look like. Maybe spray flat black over a bright color such as neon yellow or pink and then relic the black to reveal the bright color underneath. Might look great on a Solar!

Your opening riffs are like 80’s prog rock, sort of, updated for 2020+ . Are they to a particular composition?
I much prefer the DK24 with the shredder heel, I am not a fan of the block heel. Absolutely love my DK24 HSS, shoots well above its class and is just a great workhorse guitar.

I still have my '86 Charvel Model 2 that was the first guitar I bought with money I made at my first job. It has some dings but nothing like the relic on this model. Cool guitar but the Pau Ferro is a deal killer for me.
The JB is already a dark pickup, which is why that slight move towards the neck makes it sound even worse than it already does.
Looks great, I love my Custom Shop Strat with heavy relic in Seafoam green 🤤

I like the setup on my Danhage model better, due to the single coil and the top loaded floyd 1000. Having said that, I'm sure this is a beast. I'm also sure you could take a Hello Kitty Squier and make it sound just as badass with your playing, Ola.
Also please, PLEASE bring back the Solar Type V with the maple fretboard and the S/H configuration (the neck was a rail type but the footprint was single from what I remember)

I have a 1990 Charvel/Jackson DK, all original, with case and all the paperwork....question???? Should I relic this guitar for more money or just keep shredding on it? Love your work!
A whole lot of guitar for relatively little money, but I've gotten so used to less brusque heels and cutaways with more access.

Relic guitars look cool, but look great when they are your own. I’d like to see my story on a guitar, not someone else’s. kind of like a signature model, I don’t want to be playing someone else’s guitar.

You can really hear the tone difference with the relicing. It’s more open and worn sounding.

kinda wish it had a roasted maple fretboard, I think it'd look better. I don't really care much about tonewood in electric guitars, but I can't help but think pau ferro is "cheap" since it's on a lot of budget guitars. I know back in the 80's or whenever it was actually thought of as an exotic wood...
