I have just watched this video and realised that I saw you thatching roofs!!! We were passing by and my mum said to me "look there is a person thatching roofs!" And I was like oh he looks like thatcher joe and i didn't really think about it that much and then I just saw my mums car!!! OMG
Jozette Green it's not impossible! Is that a problem that I look out my window when I'm in the car!!! Wow!!!! I know it's not impossible because I saw him!!
"I couldn't think of anything worse than being sat behind a desk and computer" .... 5 years later and many hours of video editing lol bless him. Joe I'm very proud of you!
I have considered a trade as well. Actually baking is one I have considered. Do you work for someone else or work for yourself? I have considered getting into baking of old fashioned breads such as real sourdough and various multi-grain breads. Something about baking that just feels so right.
I Invoke My First Amendment Rights I work for myself. :-) It does indeed feel right. That's the kind of bread that I make. I'll be building a new oven soon, and hopefully that will make it even better. I'd suggest finding a local bakery and trying it out for a while. It's a lot of physical work and getting up a 3am to work a 16 hour day is not for everyone, but you might find that it is for you. :-)
I really admire people who can actually make stuff with their hands. Thanks for showing this, awesome to see how straw roofs are thatched, it's becoming a lost art.
i feel like the roofs you've thatched was more appealing than normal brick/concrete roofs and also how do you even stay attractive while thatching a roof? wow i cant even manage my daily looks
Why is it that after watching this, it makes me love him more. It just seems so real, his not just a pretty boy, his a normal dude with a job and does real life stuff too.
I actually love the fact you're 22 and instead of wanting to sit in an office or be a footballer or a game designer, you want to learn the tricks of the trade and actually get stuck into a great, hands on job :) good for you Joe! x
im afraid of heights, but seeing joe do this reminds me of the times when i used to work with my uncles installing tiles. i appreciate the craftsmanship joe has for roof thatching. congrats on how far youve gotten joe 👊
Jaqueline Styles There's just something so hot about the way he works and I don't know I could literally watch an hour video of Joe thatching roofs because it's so hot and just awesome watching him work.
ItsCleapatrah Only a few TH-camrs are going at it as a real job. With them, they may or may not make money. Depends on the topics covered and how popular they become. As with anything internet based, a successful TH-camr can lose their income. It is wise to have a backup plan.
RosePetal SIM It's like being a director, actor, film crew, and editing team all in one. They also go to events to meet fans, sometimes traveling across the world. They spend HOURS editing their videos, some even work more hours than a normal job, Anthony from smosh is said to work between 60 and 75 hours a week. It's a very committed job but like being a celebrity it's very hard to make it big. Also editing a video is such a meticulous thing to do I don't think people really understand how hard it is on a professional level, they also spend A LOT of money on lights, a nice camera, editing software, computers ect. It's like being a director, actor, film crew, and editing team all in one.
What an amazing video! I love how you're inspiring your younger viewers to think outside the box... BTW, I'm now one of you biggest fans since watching you and Dianne on Strictly (I'm nearly 50 and you definitely have "reached a whole new demographic") Well done young man. Well done ❤
at 0:15 when he was driving, I had a panic attack. I was like "WHY IS HE DRIVING ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD. HE'S GOING TO CRASH." Then I realized that I'm just a stupid American who doesn't realize that British people drive on the other side.
Most enjoyable vid, young man. Back about '82 I.think, I was with a tour group in England. My fourth trip. As we went through a Cotswold town. He navigated the narrow lanes expertly and there it was. A traditional Cotswold cottage with a man thatching the roof.We all debarked and got to watch him for a while. We were told they were no longer allowed open fires if the roof was thatched and a sort of netting was placed over the top to keep the birds out. I like seeing a youtuber who can do something besides talk and act the fool on camera. And encourage young folk to think about career training. Not that there's anything wrong with what youtubers do.
Joe is literally the perfect guy. Appropriate job, nice looks, amazing personality, he doesn't swear on his channel, he is not picky with girls, he's sweet!
And three years later he has made two movies, released two books (soon a third one), and done so many other things. Just amazing to have seen him progress so much!
When joe is on the top of the roof, I was "OH NO! PLEASE GO DOWN JOE! YOU MIGHT FELL AND HURT YOUR SELF!" On the other side, my mind was saying "ohhhh joe is so hot when thatching roof!"
Danielle Justice same in germany! my dads from england and my mom from germany and i live in germany. i´m really often in england but i´ve never seen a thatched roof.
I'm a little confused do people still have thatched roofs??? I never see them or maybe I have just been living under a rock and missed the thatching of the roofs trend
I love u so much Joe bcuz most of the youtubers are behind all the fame but you chose an idea that you loved. Not 7 days of work. I love that thought. This is why I love you..u're honest and super crazyyy!! :* ;)
i like people who do jobs like this, people who keep the past alive by doing jobs that have been done for a long time that dont require that much technology (i swear its taking over the world...) also, i just love joe in general! ;)
And now he travels the world and does exactly what he loves lol but this is so cool!!! If I'm ever stranded on a deserted island and I could only bring one person I'd bring joe, because he'd be able to thatch a shelter lmao LOVE YOU JOE!!
When he first climbs the ladder at around 2:40 in...i thought 'wow thats impressive, climbing up one handed, must be dangerous'...i then thought 'imagine if he was to slide down the ladder like in a action hero, no that would be crazy dangerous'...suffice to say, youre showing off Joe mate loool
That was really interesting. Building codes in the U.S. wouldn't allow that. Fire insurance would be a nightmare. It would be very easy for embers from a chimney or burning nearby structure to catch the roof on fire.
Yes and some houses even have wooden shingle roofs. However, straw has a substantial surface area and is relatively light, allowing sparks and embers to ignite it. I also believe wooden shingled roofs might be prohibited in some places in the U.S. and the owners insurance rates are probably higher if allowed.
There are areas over here that have a lot of rainfall and high humidity. Another historical factor may have been the lack of the availability of wood for shingles in Britain versus North America. Wood tended to be far more valuable and harder to obtain in Britain. The biggest export from the British North American colonies to Britain was wood. Much of the good trees had been harvested for furniture, building materials, ships and other trees harvested for fuel in Britain. Much of the forests in Britain had also disappeared because the land was being used for crops and cattle. One complaint the colonists had was that the Royal Navy was allowed to take a percentage of the harvested trees by loggers without compensation and ship them back to Britain for ships. People had been intensely harvesting wood for thousands of years in Britain. In North America, the European population walked into an area that had hardly been touched by large numbers of humans. In order to have crops, it was necessary to clear the land of trees which also generated a lot of wood in North America. This had been done hundreds of years before in Britain.

The fact that you wanted to be a roof thatcher is literally the cutest thing ever
This is very cool, Joe. I also decided to go the way of a trade instead of sitting in an office. Now I make quite a happy life as a bread baker.
Exactly what i was thinking. Not another idiot off to an office job :) live wild!
Fellow baker! I'm much more into the cakes side of it, though.
