They’ve lacked media presence until now, so it’s understandable that people don’t have an accurate image of them. However, I wouldn’t go so far as saying that they’ve won because of underestimation. The deal with the U.S. to withdraw as well as issues with the ANA have resulted in their governance.

The latter part seems to be more true.
But yes, they changed their stance on excessive entailments of laws that they earlier derived from Islamic shariah.
For example
• Islam doesnt prohibit women from being edicated. But rather Islam encourages both men and women to be educated (no age limit).
• Islam doesnt teach women cannot work (yet its preferable for men to bear the burden of financial responsibilities of their home/family)
• Islam doesnt teach to enforce the complete face-veil upon women (face-veil is only optional & preferable act of piety), only Hijab is mandatory (can be enforced).
• Islamic shariah doesn't ask upon men to enforce keeping beard (while its preferable for men)
• Islamic shariah does not prescribe to enforce laws upon women to prevent them going out mehram-male¹ (but it is regarded necessity only when women are travelling on long distance journey to have atleast 1 mehram-male)
• Islamic shariah doesn't say women cannot take part in business (but encourage that she must be in hijab when outside and can avoid frequent unncessary interaction with radom males)
• Its not prohibited upon women to take part in governemnt sectors, yet its not encouraged upon women to be a public figure without necessity.

1. mehram-males means those men who are in blood relation to women, her husband or whom she cannot marry like father, step-father, brother, grandfather, uncles, father in law, step-brother.

Taliban gouged 👁️ of a woman and fired women from Job and they follow a very bad principle of ruling. Saying and doing are two different things. With the speed at which they aquired Afghanistan, even they themselves are in disbelief. No-one knows what they will do next, not even taliban themselves. After the whole debacle, US involvement is not expected (they have in general indicated that other countries need to take care of themselves on their own). And with other countries struggling with their own economies, no one will be interested. People of Afghan never had the will power or will have it in future to overthrow taliban. The refugee problem will be biggest issue. None of the South-East Asian countries have the economic power and will to allow refugees right now, which just means oppression for the women and children there.

The matter is that there is no true Sharia law anywhere in the world. People say KSA, Qatar and UAE come close but this is literally false as their system goes against one of the fundaments: the caliph (leader/president) or the vazir (something like the prime minister, right hand of caliph) should NOT be hereditary or passed on to the son while this is literally the case in these countries. They arent really emirates or sharia countries but just Islamic kingdoms with some sharia laws.
