I am completely unfamiliar with most Japanese music. This came up on auto play for me. It is without a doubt the most vital, joyful, fun exciting music I've heard in a decade. thankyou.
While this a great performance and song, it's not 'Japanese music', not even close. Most Japanese music is played with an shamisen (三味線), also known as sangen (三絃) or samisen (all meaning "three strings"), is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument derived from the Chinese instrument sanxian. Also, the riff and music is a take on D'Angelo's 'Chicken Grease' song from his Voodoo album. Even the way she sings some of the lyrics in the versus is in the same theme as his (especially the live performance version).
The use of dynamics between the band and Nao was brilliant. Took the listener on a rollercoaster ride of Funk and smooth grooves. The Trumpbone solo was world class and the Madrigal exchange between all three horns was magical. Oh yeah, the Funk brewed up by the bass, drums, and guitar had my head bobbin.
Super tight band. When i worked in Japan 12 years ago, i was quite surprised to see a Jazz TV show on during prime time. Only northern europe loves Jazz more than the Japanese. So nice to see a real horn section; synthesized horns are just not the same. Incredible trombone solo. I live in SF area, and we are still basically in lockdown, and live music has suffered very badly. Kudos to the recording engineers, who did a great job of microphone selection/placement/mixing. Very clean.
I agree, whenever I'm in Japan, it's always pleasant to be exposed to Jazz here and there. For example, cafes often have nice Jazz BGM playing. Perhaps I don't visit the right places elsewhere, but I always feel like Jazz is more present in Japan.

Wow-I'm an old school funker(was there at the birth of the Funk movement, back in the mid-1970s-and let me tell you all-this rivals some of the best I've seen, coming from the great Funk groups of the 70s and 80s! This audio/video presentation confirms the prophecy back in the late 1970s, that "the Funk will never die"! It(Funk)died here in America, but it somehow, over the decades, took root and began to blossom and flourish in the hearts of those NOT YET BORN, back in the 1970s and 80s. This is a PHENOMENON I never thought was possible, until I saw the newer generation(mostly on youtube in the last 3 months or so)carrying on this wonderful music we(American Blacks)created back, over a HALF CENTURY ago! Through IGNORANCE and WILLFUL NEGLECT, we killed-or allowed our music to be killed off-and now we are left without a LEGACY to pass on to our progeny, here in America, some OVER FOUR DECADES LATER, after the Funk movement started; but it(the funk)has strangely enough SURVIVED-and is now in the more than capable hands of this new and younger generation-who somehow, SAW THE LIGHT-and are now the present-day torch carriers of this which we started(I am in my 60s now)back some five to five and a half decades ago! 3-15-22.
Funk had a nice little period of mainstream relevance in Japan in the 80's. My mom was stationed in Okinawa at the time, and some of the popular music revolved around this kind of music that has come to be known as City Pop--popular music with lots of funk and R&B grooves, definitely smoother and cleaner than what you might find in the US, but still undeniably rooted in funk. City Pop became popular again within the past five years thanks to the internet rediscovering it, and it's probably that that has led to having these kinds of live shows. And you're right...I'd say it's definitely in good hands.
I think music tends to cycle, it never truly dies but becomes more loved in niche circles. A genre can have a mainstream "death" but there are always people who will continue loving it. Tom Misch, who funny enough is signed under Blue Note, is a great example of the new generation of funk.
What killed funk was rap, Michael Jackson and Prince and the 10 member groups being reduced to 3 or 4 member groups. The horn sections were the first to go then drum machines became the thing lastly the synth bass came out. Funk had roughly a good twenty year run, and it went the way of jazz, blues, soul, r&b and so on. All these genres of music we made in the 19th and 20th centuries were made at a time when our heads were getting bashed in so anybody copying these genres will always be a pale imitation at best.
@@rolandbush8463 From what you've stated, I'll take it you're at least my age(I'm 64)-or close to it. And you are absolutely correct in your analysis/reply, Roland. You know all of it (eliminating the horns and replacing the bass player and drummers with synthesized bass lines and drum machines)was NOT BY ACCIDENT-BUT BY DELIBERATE DESIGN! Personally though, I liked the early Prince albums, and the Off The Wall lp, by Michael Jackson. Also-Disco, in addition to Rap, I believe were the two main forms of BASTARDIZED MUSIC which were responsible for the DEATH of our music(and everybody else's) here in America-which also allowed white folks to catch up to, and sing like us now. But it's nice to hear someone else has the correct analysis about the things which were responsible for the death our music-which was like no one else's on this entire planet. Just thought I'd mention also-both Rap and Disco, came out in the year 1979-which is when our creative Black funk and progressive R&B music, also began to wane and no longer be made. Coincidence? You be the judge. I appreciate your comments Mr. Bush; you are the only one, besides myself, it appears, who has not forgotten THE TRUE REASONS that led to our music being destroyed. I'm sure there are others who remember these things like you and I do, but you are the first to comment on it, I noticed, after I spoke on it. Thank you sir, and God bless you, for your "dead-on", or "spot-on" comments. 4-11-22.

Truly inspiring music and musicians! . . . Japan, the land of great music making but also of music reproduction: here is to their excellent audio products engineering and manufacturing and, of course, to Japanese appreciation for great sound systems and recording.
Wow. Wow. And WOW! Yes, I am late to the party but so fortunate to have run across this performance. I am thoroughly impressed! Grew up on P-Funk and so many of the funk influnced bands of the 70's and 80's here in the States. The sharp edged bass lines, and the responding horn sections took me right back to that era. And the vocalist? YOU lit up the entire stage! Keep it up!!

@@charlesbrazell2136 And I thought us metalheads were some of the worst snobs in music. Funk never died, just like jazz and blues never did, just like classical never did. It just lost the spotlight, like all music will.
Wow I could only imagine how bad ass that must have been to be there as an audience.
Very well done.
Superb in every way! Im blown away. Seems like the Japanese people excel at everything they love. So happy to stumble on this .
Beautiful voice. Great band. Thank you.
Its a strong sign of the maturity like fine wine when a culture has mastered the ways of funk and soul of which you sure have! Nice rifts!
This is fabulous! What's not to love? Marvelous performance and music. Superb lead singer with an engaging smile, phenomenal band, great song, great sound, great film. Bravo! How I wish I could have seen this live and in person. "Let's go, let's go, let's go!"
Thank you so much!
@@NAO_YOSHIOKA The World Order videos have like 10,000,000 views. Can you sing while walking like a robot? 🤣 Never mind, don't change a thing you are doing!
In the midst of the torrent of absolute crap that TH-cam throws at me, every once in a while there is a diamond. The singer absolutely OWNS it, and the band is amazing...!
Training the youtube algorythm is so easy there no way it should give you anything but gems. use the effin "dont recommend" or "not interested" buttons for a few months, and you'll get a custom tailored algo that can feed you amazing music from any and all genre without almost zero missed marks, i goes digging for new upcoming talent or small but cult past glories you never heard of with so much ease it feels like cheating at life.

What timing, what suspense, what perfection, what groove, what a performance - funk on steroids. Thx for sharing - Tokyo is a bag of endless surprises
This is insanely perfect. May the funk stay with you! 💫❤👍
❤
Wowza!!
What a discovery - giving me a huge smile.
Boy, that band is sharp and what a fantastic performance from the front :)
so absolutely perfect, what a discovery, I watched already ten times, can't stand still, and trying the bass myself ...
awwww... your comment made me so happy! thank you!
i'm so glad i found this song again. it's like you're walking alone at night then you hear a faint sound of this in a bar across the street, you get curious, come in and just get a magical sensation
Literally did this in Paris. Found a cover to a Mac Miller song this way. Magical experience.
know what you mean! i discovered this while at work, it was like waking up fresh again, or rather, waking up for the first time in weeks after too long a sleep. Just fucking jumpstarted my pleasure in life anew.
Just moved to Japan and I want to come see you play live! This is exactly the type of thing I’m into. Keep it up!
I literally twist my neck, holy funky and jazzy grooves, This is literally the best 12 minutes of my life 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love this, Japans' musicians always incorporating Western style music and mixing it into their own style .
DAMN! How did I not see this 2 years ago? Fantastic!
Congratulations! It's not too late☆
Wow ...just stumbled on these folks. I'm in Los Angeles. Outstanding.
Insane talent, world class musicians. I would really like to buy a blu-ray of this show. So damned good. And I want more...
OMG!!!!! WTF?! I've been a big fan of japanese stuff for like 20+ years and I enjoy a lot of jazz as well - even though I KNOW there's A LOT of people out there much better learned about the history of both. THAT SAID, this performance, OMG, got me up and down my chair like a little boy, just soooo gooood! All the different instrumentals and the lead singer, omg, ranking up there with my all time music experiences, DAMN I'm so hype. HOPEFULLY ALL can continue performing like this, what an absolute joy!
"Ah, do you love... Chicken Grease." 😀
This was amazing. I have to see them live one day, will be worth the trip to Japan. Everything about this just radiates good vibes
Is it actually chicken grease? Its stuck in my head. 🤣
so it is indeed chicken grease 😂
wow!!! what a band, what a suprise , completely blew me out of my mind! This is seriously good music!!
Brings a smile every time I listen to this - which is many. All concerned just nail it and are clearly having a blast. Thankyou.
Truly inspiring music and musicians! . . . Japan, the land of great music making but also of music reproduction: here is to their excellent audio products engineering and manufacturing and, of course, to Japanese appreciation for great sound systems and recording.
THAT WAS SUPER SOULFUL, JAZZY & FUNKY!!! I bow to all of you bad ass musicians and superb singer! Peace & Gratitude
Nitram
Wow. Wow.
Just wow. This is the real deal. Grooves so deep you could ski down them. Fantastic.
Wow thank you!
Groovy words soul brother
Sun rising with the funk ! Thanks for your performance ! From France.
❤️
How did this find its way to my youtube feed? Thank you Nao Yoshoka and TH-cam for bringing the funk today!
あのすごい公演の熱気を再び、めっちゃ楽しみです✨
Pensé que era yo solo
shigetaka ikemoto blew my mind this whole performance. his trombone lines are so crisp
her voice is so smooth, i'm in love with her singing
That’s a understatement!
I'm amazed with the dynamics of that song and group. It is briliant.
Enjoying the whole band - especially the horn ad libs and arrangements. Thank you
This performance rocks, Nao and the band must have brought down the roof at the Blue Note that night. I am very Jealous for anyone who got to see this performance live they certainly got more than there money's worth WOW, WOW, WOW...
What a delicious jazz funk treat! So many layers and the trombone highlight was awesome. Very nice.
Wow. Incredibly tight and creative band, but Nao expressed the joy of sharing this experience and gave the band a beautiful face, along with her voice.
BLUE GIANTに出会って良かった。
こんな素晴らしい音楽があるなんて。
I just can't stop coming back and listening to this music again and again and again and again...
If I was there, I would have lost my shit. This is death by overwhelming smoothness. Every aspect is so smooth it juices up your heart. Midway through you realize this has gone way past your usual comfy hi-spec jazz music presentation - this is the absolute best from every members; in all aspects and departments. I'm only 40 but I feel like I've been building up to this moment where I could attune to this.
Over the top excellent live music. "This" is the answer :)
NIPPON BANZAI! :)
'Death by overwhelming smoothness' - indeed, that's the way I want to go when my time comes.
This was such a wonderful performance, thank you to everyone who made it possible. I wish it was on American radio.
Next level jazz funk.
Amazing ensemble.
Congrats to all of you!!!!!
What genre is this?
SO glad I found this. I am transfixed on this new genre. I totally dig it
Stunning great performance. I love this reduced, not overloaded kind of playing Funk, but every phrase etc. is 100 % at the point. Doing this whith this amount of improvisational parts is simply world class! You with Your guys know where it should run to! Greetings und standing ovations from Germany!
Drummer just great sounds! Enjoyed! Japanese girl can really sing! Very good horn sounds together NOT single!
Her and the funk are going to put me in a looney bin I can't begin to count how many times I've listened to this It's just sad there is no market for creativity and talent like hers in the US- signed funk falatic
No idea how the algorithm brought me into the Tokyo funk scene, but I love it. Amazing musicians.

Brazil sends a kiss to this excellent singer and the whole majestic, good, beautiful band etc...
...came across Toshiko in the 90s and later Miki and Brian of course... Helped me to really love ALL music and ALL peoples....

wow wow wow ..... great funk, great musicians, Nao as a strong voice with a great range, soooooo good
one thing makes me nuts:
This is a clip with almost 4 MILLION views and over 2,000 comments.
Everyone loves and praises the music and style of this band and foremost her outstanding singer.
Now, I was checking how many followers she has:
around 20,000
That's sad folks. 😥
Is it really so hard to check the link in that description, follow it and click on SUBSCRIBE?
She deserves it. The whole band deserves it.
And if you really liked that music and you wanna hear more:
Follower her, follow that band and follow this channel.

Stumbled on to this great set of jazz.. So amazing enjoyable to laying back music
You Tube hits a home run again ! Not sure how the last few things I watched led YT to offer up Nao Yoshioka, but I appreciate it. A fun 12-13 minutes. Subscribed here in Chicago.
OK, back here again in Jan '24 and just as loving this now a s in '23. Nao Yoshioka's comments below are a summation of how i feel about everyone involved in this performance, which is as technical adept as it is fun. Masterwork.
I absolutely love the bridge, so soothing! Wonderful!
