  • Today, I take on the task of converting my Trek Stache from Sram GX 11spd to singlespeed. It's an easy conversion that can be done for under $100.

I'll walk you through the installation of the Problem Solvers single speed for XD driver kit that I used, and give my first impressions after a short ride (hint, it's fun!). I'm doing the work where I work, Race Pace Bicycle in Ellicott City, MD.

We are a locally owned independent bike retailer since 1978, and carry Trek, Cannondale, Santa Cruz, Scott, and Mosaic. The ride takes place at Patapsco Valley State Park, in the Baltimore County side of the Avalon area.

I have the problem solvers conversion on my Kona big unit. I freakin love it! That thing is so fun to mob around town. It’s like riding a bmx monster truck.

Interesting. I specifically put gears onto my singlespeed for winter. I'm generally riding on snow and find the varying resistance hard to deal with on my singlespeed gear. Not to mention getting insanely sweaty pushing that gear at -10°C is not very sustainable.

Can you use a oval chain ring?

I didn’t, but my understanding is that yes, you can.

That would depend on chain tension and the severity of the oval

..soo wrong, single speed is some hilly but mostly flat city ride with lots of idle, what you were doing on that bumpy terrain is chewing your knees in pieces, i bet just renting a cruiser for a boardwalk ride would be better introductory in to the single-speed cycling for you. (you look fairly uncomfortable in this video i bet you also need some intro to riding bike in general, what is your stance, what you looking at / how far, what is your dominant leg, a single speed is what we all should start with..)

People who don't know like to tell people that singlespeed is bad for your knees. While it can be, the worst is high strain while seated, which your body will quickly tell you to either stand up or get off.
