This is brilliant, it's a really great interview, this has been my favourite Three Sides Of The Coin so far

I was a professional computer graphic designer for almost 20 years. I did things from T-Shirts (even did those by hand with lithography) to textile printing (did some of that with lithography, also back in the 80s) and then promotional advertising for major events including posters and post cards. I have been a KISS fan since around 1976 and I just realized after watching this how much Dennis influenced how I designed things and put things together. Guys, I really appreciate you doing this show and putting some things into perspective for me. It's amazing how many things stick with you subliminally and the source is never really acknowledged. Keep on keeping on!!!

I'm watching this a second time. Dennis was a huge influence on me becoming an art director/graphic designer. I became a VP/creative director at an ad agency but office politics led me to leave to go on my own. Not as much money but the freedom is amazing. I remember always seeing his name on albums. He is a HUGE part of developing the image of KISS. Thanks Dennis!

Great episode guys! in terms of other groups who have an illustrator/designer with a long tenure who's well known to the fans? I'd say Iron Maiden's Derek Riggs was the first one that jumped to my mind. To bring the discussion back to KISS, the hyper realistic styled artist you mentioned in connection to Rush & couldn't think of the name may have been Hugh Syme who interestingly enough did the cover for KISS Revenge.

    • @denniswoloch5757

Great episode! Thanks for getting Love Gun in. I was hoping to hear something about 1) The Originals cover and that awesome booklet, 2) the Alive II cover being a giant logo instead of a photo, and it's inside stage photo and, 3) why the Creatures logo was pink (makes sense). My favorite albums of his are Alive!, Love Gun and Creatures. RARO was good too.

MINDBLOWING EPISODE IS A UNDERSTATEMENT! Absolutely awesome interview Guys probably My favorite episode so far!!( and I have watched them all some twice!!) Dennis is such a talented and genuinely nice Guy. I met Him in the early 90's at the KISS KONVENTIONS in the Meadowlands and He spent ALOT of time talking to the fans and answering questions. He took the time to sign My Destroyer album. Just a super great Guy. I have waited so long for The Three of You to have Him on as a guest and it finally happened!!!! Can't wait for His return to the show!! Thank You Michael, Tommy, and Mark (and Lisa too!) For taking time out each week from Your busy schedules and Families to do this terrific show!! See You next week!! THANKS AGAIN!!! - Andy.

Guys, this was easily the BEST interview you've ever done!...So much minutia regarding the KISS album artwork...Great stuff...
BTW, Carvel is a soft serve ice cream company in the NYC area with take out locations in the city, Long Island etc...Dennis is spot on regarding the commercials...Tom Carvel had a gravelly Brooklyn accent and did all the voice overs...I'm 50 and those commercials were a big part of my childhood...

Great show! I remember reading an interview with Dennis in a fanzine years ago and that's when I found out he came up with the signature color/aura for each member. In that interview he said he initially wanted to give Paul yellow because of the star but he didn't mention that here.
Wonder if he's the one who also suggested an orange aura for Eric C. when his solo portrait was painted by Eraldo? :)

    • @denniswoloch5757

The handwritten notes in "Alive!": I know Lydia actually wrote out Peter's note. Peter's spelling was so poor, and they didn't want to make him look stupid, so Lydia wrote it for him. That's her handwriting.

I started watching this channel a few days ago and at first I didn't get it, seemed like just some middle aged guys over analyzing an old band lol
But after watching a few episodes, it grew on me and I actually love it now. You guys provide a lot of insight into the music business and insider/backstage stories while discussing KISS. I am a KISS fan, although not at this level. But it's a great podcast regardless. Well done.

Yes, fascinating interview!! just awesome behind the scenes!! over time I've decided Delaney wasn't lying ... that the ALIVE! back cover wasn't from KISS show per se....I don't see a single KISS fan in that Cobo crowd beside the 4 featured with the sign? everyone else looks like the Hanson brothers from Slapshot!

Really enjoyed this episode. Of the album covers Dennis was involved in creating my 3 faves are: 1 ALIVE! 2 Destroyer 3 Rock and Roll Over. The show at Cobo Hall on May 16, 1975 that was featured on the back cover of ALIVE! was not a Styx show, a much lesser known band from Pittsburgh called "Diamond REO" opened for KISS that night.

Is there a story on the way Ace is holding the guitar on Alive? The guitar looks backwards and upside down.
I remember when I bought Alive from Woolco and got back to the car with my dad and started reading those
personal band member notes aloud....Not good at 10 years old.
Nice to know that the hand on The Elder belonged to Paul...I had always heard it was a model.

Very cool show. Is it a coincidence that the more people got in Dennis's way the worse the album's became? I might be crazy but Alive and Destroyer are the cream of the crop? Same thing with the merchandise. They should bring Dennis back to create some really cool retro merchandise. Kiss Cards with new 70's photos and some other cool stuff from the 70's. Thanks guys.

Don't know how much this matters, but the Frank Frazetta paintings used on Molly Hatchet's albums were not painted specifically for those albums. All three were previously done for other projects between the late '60s/mid '70s ("Molly Hatchet" cover image was a plain ol' painting, I think, and "Flirting With Disaster" and "Beatin the Odds" were both for book covers). So maybe Molly Hatchet was able to afford him bc he wasn't commissioned by them to create a new image for them, which is what was being asked of him by Dennis Woloch for the "Destroyer" cover.
Purely speculation on my part; I don't know the inside details on how those deals work!
    PS - great interview!

wow, about an hour in where Dennis says Peter & Ace had almost nothing to do with album cover Inputs etc ....... That they were busy getting high & doing drugs & drinking ..... This is pretty huge really. Because this sorta solidifies what Paul & Gene have said many times. So It isnt Gene & Paul being control freaks, it was Gene & Paul trying to babysit the partiers & Make KISS big & keep things together.,

To me, in CA the most memorable record store that always sticks out in my head that I can even remember in those days was "Licorice Pizza"!? They always had the new KISS album releases at the time displayed all huge in their stores. Not sure why for the Lick it Up cover it wasn't discussed about Vinnie's head being superimposed on a mannequin? This was discussed before in another episode so why not clear it up with the guy who put the cover together? Was it a gag order not to bring it up?

"Condomnation" was a proposed title for what became "Asylum." I remember the name actually appeared in articles in Hit Parader. Because the cover date was something like two months early, and consider each issue was probably prepared two months before it hit the shelves, they were always making false statements, as if they were trying to predict what would happen in four months. I remember them claiming the new KISS album was called "Condomnation."
I also remember prior to "The Elder," 16 magazine had an article discussing the possibility of the band removing the makeup.

I really liked Denniss view on Kiss. He's not as emotionally evolved or invested in them as some of us are.
To hear him say Peter and Ace not really being involved with the look of the band and some of that direction speaks volumes about those guys concern for the band and fans. Also Dennis calling Gene out about being an asshole was great. That ,to me, shows Gene had concern for the whole Kiss machine.
Best laugh out loud moments, for me....
    Paul,"I have good hands."
and the Dennis thing of him saying "Is he(Paul) gay?"
The Kiss images are a huge part of the history , legacy, and the mythos. Really fucking cool to hear an inside view of all it.
You gotta have Dennis on again A.S.A.P.!
    P.s
I like Crazy Nights , Too.
I had homemade painted pants and a bike reflector covered guitar strap with a Body Glove pin. Don't feel so alone,Mike. Your people are out here and we will back you up but only if there is punch and pie.lol.

Ken Kelly (Destroyer album cover artist) is the nephew of Frank Frazetta's wife Eleanor “Ellie” Frazetta (1935-2009), whose maiden name was Kelly. Not cousins. In the early 1970s he did a couple of cover paintings for Castle of Frankenstein magazine. Throughout the 1970s he was one of the foremost cover artists on Warren Publishing's Creepy and Eerie magazines.

    • @DashChicago
      @DashChicago 7 ปีที่แล้ว

That's intense! I would have flipped my lid. There's an interview with Sean Delaney in which he says it was Cobo Hall but that it was actually at a Styx show , that KISS wasn't on the bill! He said they wanted to look famous so Sean hatched a plan to have these these kids take a few pictures with the banner at a sold out Cobo Hall show. Even though he would know, I've never believed it. That said, I don't see any KISS shirts in the crowd. Would your friend have lied to you about matters of such gravity?

    • @scaramcnamara689
      @scaramcnamara689 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I absolutely believe her. Late-thirties & not someone you would expect to be former KISS fan. We were bored at our jobs and the conversation somehow steered toward my favorite topic. Surprisingly she just happened to mention that she was on the Alive album cover. Up until that point I didn't know that she had even heard of KISS. She went on to tell about how they used to be a lot cooler before they became super famous, like after the show they would sit on the edge of the stage & sign autographs.. (Just to clarify, she was in her late thirties in 1997 when this conversation happened so she would have been about sixteen or so in 1975.) I agree about the lack of KISS t-shirts but there was a time before they were selling a lot of that stuff yet. Technically the photo was taken pre-Alive and pre-fame.

I've been searching but I can't find the image in a high enough resolution to point her out. She circled herself with a ballpoint pen on my copy but that is long gone.

WHY didnt someone Bring up ALIVE II , WHY, WHY WHY lol A L I V E II is probably THE coolest album cover in KISS's entire history imo Even the superimposed extra blood added to Genes face, the different shaded lighting, the enourmous Gatefold that blows you away when you open it. .... omg

We didn't add extra blood to Gene's face. When he spits blood, he shakes his head pretty violently and the blood goes everywhere!

How would Destroyer look like with Frank Frazetta`s pen?

I know I wasn’t around back then but after listening to Rock and roll all over and The elder I don’t get the hate for the Elder (or Unmasked for that matter like Naked city? How does that not rock?)

Yeah, "Condomnation" became "Asylum." As for "Crazy Nights," that was almost titled "Who Dares Wins."

How about the Iron Maiden artist?

  • @Skulllywag

Actually, Frank Frazetta DID NOT "do covers for Molly Hatchet". Frank did CONAN covers, of which a few were later licensed by Molly Hatchet for their covers. The "Molly Hatchet" covers in question were actually painted in the late 60's and early 70's.....long before Molly Hatchet existed. Frank's art was BIG in the 60's-70's (books and magazine covers, even a movie with Ralph Bakshi)...I can see KISS not wanting to shell out the money it would have taken.

He did the cover to Nazareth's Expect No Mercy album as well, which came out in 1977...but...that might have been a licensed image as well.

It was licensed. It's original name was "The Brain" and painted in 1967.

No Mean City was my favorite Naz album, aside from Hair of the Dog ofcoarse.

In a way, it was disheartening to find out that the guys on the back of Alive! weren't really fans, but still cool that he said that, though.

Put it to rest already. That is a lie! Flat out lie! That is a KISS concert and those are real KISS fans. They have been interviewed many times and they have gone to many other KISS shows.

Lee Neaves and Bruce Redoute. I found one of them on Facebook before. After I became Facebook friends with Bill Starkey and Steve Coronel, I just started thinking of anybody whose name is a part of Kisstory, so to speak, just to see if they were on there.

May I suggest you read "Nothin" to Lose"- the Making of KISS '72-'75, there is a big article in there about the story of who the fans on the back cover of ALIVE! were. It's a very good read, coauthored by Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons.
