John Sebastian, the lead singer is a great songwriter and his songs have been covered by many other artists. He also wrote and performed the theme song from the 1970s sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter", which launched the career of John Travolta.

My grandmother always made ambrosia with fresh oranges cut up with coconut. That was all she put in it. I've seen it done other ways, but that was her method. This was a cool song from my childhood in the '60s. It used to play on the radio all the time!

Loved this song ever since I was a kid ! John Sebastian was part of the early 60’s Greenwich Village folk scene, so it’s not surprising how good the lyrics are. He must have been describing life in New York City.

    • @ninja_tony

It definitely FEELS like New York City to me. Not just lyrically, but there’s a style and rawness to it that’s unmistakable. I never think of this song when people discuss the “official soundtrack of NYC”, but maybe I should, because this nails that feeling perfectly.

The singer is John B. Sabastian. Look into all their stuff. It was so good to hear songs like this coming over my mono transistor radio that I would walk around the city listening to. In the 60's that was the equivalent to today's streaming on a smart phone, but it was total freedom to me to be away from home and hear current music everywhere. Intoxocating. Another song that comes back to me from that time is "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the M.G.'s. Check that out. I'm 66 years old and I can still remember where I was when I heard this for the first time. I'm walking around Tacoma, Washington in the summer; I'm 10 yeas old, and this music was hitting me so hard I climbed up into a cherry tree in front of a junior high and just laid up there and listened to the music in the sun and nothing else. How can that memory be as clear or clearer than what I had for dinner last night? I think that's the power of music. Love you two; stay on your path.

  • @MisterWondrous
    @MisterWondrous 2 ปีที่แล้ว

When Mama made Ambrosia, she would cut up some apples into bitesized chunks...no wait, that's Waldorf Salad. Ambrosia would have orange slices, coconut flakes, grapes, blueberries, pineapple wedges, watermelon, honeydew melon, and cantaloupe scooped into balls, and maybe a few pecans or walnuts, all packed into a carved-out watermelon. This song, however, is the quintessential 60s summer song, and reflected well the partying night moves and tudes. Hooby-shooby, hip-flip city. There are also some great youtube videos for the song worth seeing. Thanks again. Happy birthweek!

This was actually a great dance number back in the mid-60s. A girl in junior high would have a party, the big stack of 45 rpm records would be next to her record player and the great fast and slow dance songs of that era would drop from the spindle to play one after the other. Fun times for many of us!

That was a good laugh as Lexi went into the ambrosia explanation, and Brad looked at her like she had three eyes or something. I still have my Spoonful albums from the 60's - my high school days. This was like a lot of early songs in that radio wanted them short so they could get in more commercials and talking. Sometimes long songs wouldn't be played so artists would make a cut for radio, and a longer for records.

Filled my car with gas and got a carton of Marlboro for less than $7 total. A motel room was $6 at motel 6. I want some "Ambrosia" now- Ambrosia is an American variety of fruit salad originating in the Southern United States. Most ambrosia recipes contain canned or fresh pineapple, canned mandarin orange slices or fresh orange sections, miniature marshmallows, and coconut.

Do You Believe in Magic?, Daydream are my suggestions for reactions by the Lovin' Spoonful. Nice reaction. Ambrosia is a whipped fruit salad dessert AND a band. Biggest Part of Me and You're the Only Woman are suggestions by them , and I think you'll love the blue-eyed soul vibes. Peace

Yeah! One of the best 60s songs, pretty irresistible..."Puppet Man" by the 5th Dimension is another one from the 60s, that rocks hard like that, with insane thick vocal harmonies!

They also did do you believe in magic and The "Welcome Back Kotter" theme song. John Sebastian was a very good writer.

People would sing the line "Hot night, summer in the city" in the equivalent of a meme when I was young.

Ambrosia for the Ancient Greeks was what they called "the food (and nectar/drink) of the gods", but in modern times, the food that Lex is talking about refers to 1 or more dishes that consist of various layers of fresh citrus, sugar, and coconut.
However, yes Brad, it was also a very awesome progressive/soft rock, jazz fusion group, and a band you MUST put on your list of reactions to do. Some of their best soft rock (blue-eyed soul) songs are How Much I Feel, Biggest Part Of Me, You're The Only Woman and Holdin' On To Yesterday. However, some of their great jazz fusion songs are Nice, Nice Very Nice and Time Waits for No One.

The beginning of "Do you believe in magic" by this group reminds me of Lex.

Ambrosia is like a nut and fruit cocktail mix up with cool whip and sour cream. Really good.

The correlate between tuna salad and ambrosia is you'd see them both on the same table at pot lucks and picnics back in the day.

Ambrosia is a fruit salad (often canned or poached, but fresh works too, and does NOT have celery in it. Waldorf Salad has Apples, Celery,Grapes/Raisins and Walnuts lightly coated in Mayonnaise though, if that is what you were thinking of.); the dressing being comprised of Sour Cream and Sugar. Most people use whipped cream because that's what Sour Cream and Sugar mixed together tastes like, so they assume it's whipped cream and use whipped cream. Dip a fresh Strawberry in Sour Cream, then Brown Sugar...try it.

As I listened to this song, I thought about how Brad and Lex won't ever experience hearing this like most of us did, on a car radio with one speaker or on a record player with cracks and pops.
