There are many ways to end a song on the drums, but today we're going to take a look at the "trash can ending" in particular. There's really no right or wrong way to perform this, but here are a few tips to help you out!

@@norskov Finally somebody gets it. I'm sure a lot of these guys know their rudiments, and thus what the correct names are, so why don't they use them? There's no good reason not to be precise when this stuff is already codified.
This was actually super helpful and so incredibly stupidly easy that I never even thought of how simple it could be. You totally nailed it at 0:36 ; I've been playing for 18 years, with 14 and a half years of lessons, and I *still* dread when a band (or one particular worship team I play with at church) says "ok great and then we want a big splashy end, just do something crazy to end us out on this song", with them obviously not having a clue what "crazy" means besides "yo could you like, hit lots of drums quick or something". This really breaks down how stupid easy it can be. Very useful my friend. Thanks!

Glad somebody has finally addressed this topic. It's worth mentioning that everything that came BEFORE the ending (i.e. the body of the song) should inform what you pull out of "the trash can" for an ending. Do what's appropriate. Licks are awesome, but sometimes a cymbal roll with mallets can be just as intense if that's what's called for.
Totally agree Paul. I tend to pull my can ending from elements I used in the song as well.
How have I never learned the six stroke roll before? Gonna practice that for a few hours now.

Off the subject a little, but a lot of great Motown hits start with a six stroke roll right out of the gate. Good luck.
I've been playing them forever. Just never thought of using them for an ending. RLLRRL
5, 6, and 7 stroke rolls are all an absolute blast! Give em a try and have fun with them. They sound sick just on their own but toss em into fills and then start "voice"ing them (move the strokes around the kit to different drums).

Just joined a cover band. Most of the original songs fade out. I am supposed to come up with trashcan(big rock) endings, especially for the last song of the night. This really helps. Thanks!

I don't know what Humble Pie's drummer, Jerry Shirley did for his part in song endings, but their "Rock in The Fillmore album contained some of the best signature endings I've ever heard.

There are trash-can ending options one can do without the signature "crash out" on the cymbals. For example, the ending of "California P.M.", a jazz-fusion/rock piece by the George Benson band (in a 1979 recording). Harvey Mason on drums does do a trash-canner on the last chord of the song---big cymbal blast, a cymbal trill, then working the skins part of the kit---and then, instead of a crash-out cymbal blast, he does a "flam crash-out" on the snare or tom without the cymbals. Still effective.

Never heard the "Trash Can" term in reference to song endings. I learned that type of song ending as "Train Wreck" endings. I like leaning new things.

I think 2005, but people didn't start sharing their knowledge until smartphones became the most common type of phone. I want to say that you didn't see these types of instructional videos, at least for music, until about 2009.
I'm self taught. I wish I would have played in school band growing up as that would have definitely helped. People compliment my drumming and I play in a rock band, but I'm nowhere near as good as I could be. Kids today need to take advantage of this stuff.

If I'm going to do a "trash can" ending (I'm usually allotted about 3 per 4 hour show because rockabilly doesn't really call for too much flair from the drummer at the end of songs) I end with syncopated kicks and flams, singles, doubles, and Paradiddles around the kit. My "stinger is a 2-3 second pause, just to make sure the band knows the song is coming to an official close, and then a hit on the crashes (or toms depending upon what feels right).

that is a K Kerope next to your hi-hats, is it not? What size is it? To my ears it has the perfect crash sound I am looking for. I have a lot of saving up to do before I can get me some. Right now I have a Zildjian 18" A Crash/Ride as my left crash...not bad, not bad at all, but far from a Kerope! I personally love your drumming feel and the way you teach...thank you so much!
Sean Meister I think 19". But the 18" sounds a little more "in the pocket", more compact, but still big.
yes! The 18" is what I would love to have someday as my left side crash/ride...and then a 20" in the 'ride' position on the right as my ride/crash...and the Kerope hi-hats of course...looking at spending a pretty penny but well worth it someday.

I can't stand those extended rolls at the end of a song. Makes me feel like throwin' a beer bottle the drummer LOL

For a three hour show I do only 2 or 3 "trash can" endings. I try to just have an ending for the song and let it be.
I'm with you on this. Too many canned endings make things sound "thrown together". When used correctly, they're fun. When it's how you end every song, it begins to sound sloppy from a performance standpoint.
