    I got the M2 MacBook Air 15@ with the upgraded 10-core gpu and 512gb ssd for faster speeds with 8gb unified memory, I have swap turned off and only have safari and FinalCut opened. I edit 10-bit 4:2:2 HEVC (XAVC HS) footage from my FX-30 cinema camera with 2 effects and a color grade and it performs like a champ, my secret was to turn off low power mode while editing and turn on Better Performance mode, it is very good for editing and this is a good spec too! Yes 16gb ram is preferred but if you use these settings it won’t cause any problems as long as you don’t add more than 3 effects on the footage.

    I have the original late 2016 MBP that debuted this design. I bought it new with 256 GB storage and 8 GB RAM. In a week, I use iMovie to edit half a dozen 2-3min 1080p videos for my business. Occasionally I do a longer 10-12 min video in 4K or 1080p content. Still works great 👍🏽 Can’t imagine how it would be like to use a M1 or M2. I’m planning to get the 14” M2 with 1 TB storage and 16 GB ram when it comes out sometime next year.

    As someone that uses an m1 MacBook Air quite heavily for video editing my initial impression of m2 is that it is more than capable of most things you throw at it and a lot of that is down to the speed of the internal SSD. I’d go as far as to say that most people probably don’t need a base M1 Pro MacBook Pro now that this chip exists

    • @robertkeaney9905
      @robertkeaney9905 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      They halved the internal ssd speed of the baseline m2 pro.
      The baseline m1 MacBook air and m1 MacBook pro use two 128 gb ssd's working in tandem to speed up ssd work. Which gave them blazing speed.
      However, the down side of this method was that it meant apple had to produce both 128 gb ssd's and 256 gb ssd's for their most popular skews. (the 256 gb m1s and the 512 gb m1s)
      To cut down production costs for the m2 basic line. They decided to stop producing 128 gb ssds. And instead only produce 256 gb ssd's for the 256 gb m2's and 512 gb m2's.
      With the baseline m2 have one 256 gb ssd instead of two 128 gb ssd's. Negating the double ssd advantage of the baseline m1 line.
      So unless you go with the 512 gb model of the m2, your ssd speed is effectively halved vis a vis the older baseline m1s.

    • @ConorORegan
      @ConorORegan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@robertkeaney9905 you won’t notice that in regular use

    • @robertkeaney9905
      @robertkeaney9905 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@ConorORegan With regular uses, yes, but it does handicap the export speed of the baseline m2 mac.
      Making it export about as fast as an m1.
      Because the M2's improved media engine lets it finish part of the export faster, only to then be gimped by the slower ssd speed. Making it finish exporting dead even with an M1 a lot of time.
      The end result is that the M2 is almost identical to the M1 when it comes to performance in video editing.
      And the only real edge the m2 chip has in its baseline configuration, is that its much faster when you're browsing online.
      It is true that the M2 boasts better media encoders, and can be configured with up to 24 gb of ram. But you won't see the benefits of that with the baseline configuration.
      So instead of buying a baseline M2. A lot of people would be better served picking up a refurbished M1 MacBook pro or MacBook air.
      You'll get more or less the same performance and save 150 dollars.

    • @ShMartinJo
      @ShMartinJo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertkeaney9905 thank you for the clarification. i’m going for the M2 MB Air’s 512 GB version, expanding it to 2TB with 16GB RAM (possibly 24). So I should be in the clear with having the same efficient speed that exists with M1’s MB Air, correct?

    • @robertkeaney9905
      @robertkeaney9905 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ShMartinJo Unless you live in an really really hot place and plan on using it outside. Then yes, It'll at least be as fast as the M1 MB Air. And it will be faster at certain tasks as well.
      The M2 air only has two weaknesses. It has less speed if you choose the 256 gb version. And it runs a bit hotter than the M1 MB Air since the M2 chip is basically an overclocked version of the m1 chip.
      Sort of like how the 13th gen intel chip set is basically just an suped up version of the 12th gen intel chip set. Which gives better performance but runs a tiny bit hotter.
      I think you've made good purchasing decisions though. So as long as you aren't trying to edit 8k footage outside by the pool in the middle of july. You should be ready to rock and roll with the m2 mac book air.

    Do not buy the base model of the M2 MacBook Pro! Unlike the M1 base model, Apple only populated one NAND slot in the new 256GB model. This cuts storage speed literally in half versus M1 model. If you get at least 512GB storage you will avoid this major drawback. Then both NAND slots are used with 2X 256GB chips so speed returns to normal.

    I miss the chair-jump “ooof!” scene transitions you used to do. 😁
    I edit on an M1 13” MBP. I’m doing paid work too. The editing and colour corrections are pretty much flawless on a 4K timeline, no proxies, etc. Effects, titles, noise reduction, all bring me down to single digit frame rates on playback. Resolve can render those elements out to bring playback back to full speed and if I want to change anything, I can get the original clips back and tweak it.
    The screen size is the killer for Resolve, although I sometimes Sidecar my iPad Pro. I think I can stick with this machine for a year or two more before work demands an upgrade.

    • @roguewavecreative
      @roguewavecreative 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly I see no reason why you would upgrade. I have the M1 MacBook Air and I’m doing 4K on there no problem and Adobe suite although we’re transitioning to the affinity bundle because it’s an amazing bundle for a graphic designer and that thing is M1 to the M1 it’s crazy how fast it is although Photoshop and illustrator now are super fast to but adobe still having issues because their software is so old for them to really bump it up and even on Intel they need to like recodethe whole thing and they have no incentive to.
      though when I finally left recently they tried to give me like I think three months free and a year at 2999 but I just gotta get off that thing it’s like drugs I mean it’s the best yes but I can do what I need to do on affinity and I have an agency so I’m really excited

    I feel like a lot of bigger youtubers who are used to shelling out $4000+ for a machine downplay the capabilities of lower end hardware. I would LOVE even an m1 macbook air, but some larger youtubers would complain that it is incapable of editing to the level of their extremely overpowered machines. For context my entire career (as a graphic designer) depends upon a 2 core 4 thread laptop from 2012 and while it’s on it’s last legs, it works

    That is what I said when Max Tech did his ridiculous unrealist benchmarks. It means little as it is not real usage. What was done in this review was close to the max you would push this machine, otherwise you would get the MB Pro 14. So none of the heat issues, no fan noise, no crashing, smooth, fast for what it is, and no issues with SSDs.
    The MB Pro 13 is solid, maybe too boring for some, but for those that just want a workhorse for a medium-pro workload, it will be great. Ignore the usual YT channels that love to hate Apple, and put this down as a very solid choice. Of course, the MB Air will probably do this task as well (we shall see) and that may excite more with its newer features, and that is fair enough. However, typing on my M1 MB Pro 13, I love the TouchBar, battery life, studio mics, the safeguard of a fan when I get humid hot conditions (no aircon).

      You like Everyday Dad's subjective assessment ('kinda ok') over actual benchmarks and real world test? Doesn't it bother you that Apple have limited the fans on the M2 MBP to not come on till it reaches 100ºC? Don't use the fans as a guide. Your M1 MBP is actually a better machine that the M2 MBP as it has faster ssd chips. Isn't it good to know that before you 'Upgrade' to a worse machine?

      @@mtklaric Working! But the things I should note are:
      1) I run dual 1440p monitors. I read there are some cutting-edge adapters that can do 4k/5k. Can't vouch for those.
      2) DRM-managed material is not displaying (eg Netflix). I wouldn't have noticed this myself in my daily life but I read from others.
      3) If you're really, and I mean really, trying to stress the video translation driver you can notice some lag. I'm talking if you take a complicated picture that is hard to compress and you just go ham moving it all over. I'm personally giving this a pass. It's working way better than say Sidecar which runs on a similar tech-premise.

    Apple have overclocked the M2 to give 13% more speed for 30 more watts. The MacBook M2 really thermally throttles even with a fan plus if you get 256Gb single NAND chip ssd it will be slower than the M1 MBP. Your folksy "seems kinda ok" doesn't prove that as an objective test when you are pre disposed to say it's great.

    Hi Gary, I love your videos and you don't use the complicated words.
    I am looking to buy a MacBook Air M2 (8 core GPU, 16GB RAM and 512GB Hard disk). At the moment my TH-cam channel is fairly basic, but I can see myself using OBS, DaVinci resolve or Final cut in future.
    I am a bit worried about sustain performance on MacBook air due to no fan.
    Should I go for MacBook air M2 or MacBook M1 Pro 14 inch.
    At the moment, M1 Pro 14 inch seems like an overkill, but would hate to buy the computer again 3 years down the track.

      @@BrightRightInfo I don't want to suggest because it's your money in the end, but i can tell you how I would make a decision.
      1. Money - if you can afford it, I'll go for M1 pro, cause it's just better value for money.
      2. Portability - m2 air definitely is more portable so if your carrying your laptop more often then not, then m2 make sense and it is pretty good at doing photo and video editing and the encoders help.
      But then again, m1 pro in a bag won't make much difference.
      3. Battery - if you don't charge your laptop often enough then m2 air.
      4. Work - both laptops be good for photo and video editing, but if I'm future you want better editing, slightly bigger screen and a much better color reproduction of m1 pro will make huge difference, plus it's just really easy to transfer video and photos from SD card directly to laptop with built in Sd card reader.
      5. Versatile - m1 is just more versatile cause of so much better performance.
      Plus dual monitor support, HDMI and SD card gives so much versatility and don't have to think about carrying dongle or charger. Battery is still excellent in m1 pro compared to any windows laptop.
      6. Few other bits - the base model m2 air is the best deal but i just cannot recommend 8gb ram and 256 HD.
      If your stretching to upgrade and want to get good performance from your machine for 5-6 years, m1 MacBook pro just make sense.
      If you have limited budget and can live with old design, m1 air is just an excellent device and relatively cheaper.
      If i have money, I'll buy m2 air just because i really like the form factor and portability.
      I'm sorry i don't have a good reason to buy m2 air and a newer chip is just not good enough reason to get m2 air.
      Hope this helps. I should have made a TH-cam video about it 😁😁
