I had a Radiola 18 that I bought in a Second hand furniture store in Paterson NJ in 1968 I used it to listen to Jean sheperd on WOR in NY City. It had a100A speaker. JIt worked as well as it could inbto the 1980's, the last time it was turned on. it was still around in 2019 in the same condition as 1968 when it was sent to a new owner.
Oh I didn't buy two. A viewer gave me one around 6 or 7 years ago. I'd forgotten all about it until a few days ago when I stumbled across it while cleaning :)
The RCA Radiola Service Notes for the model 60 is a must read. Figure 17 shows the underside of the chassis and a clear line drawing of what things are and colors of wires and where they should go. Figure 18 does the same for the power unit. Looking good on the 2nd power unit so far Bob.
Remember in 1928, RCA didn't manufacture it's own radios. Generally, most were made by GE and the rest by Westinghouse. This may account for the difference in the power supplies. Tgere were numerous differences between the GE and Westinghouse versions. The filter capacitors do not use paper for the dielectric. As a result they do not tend to leak and generally will be fine after 95 years.
When I was young I sewed fishing net in my space time it is the same nuts that used in wire lashing, it’s not a difficult nut and not so difficult to do, I have done it on wires, it’s almost therapeutic to sit and do and the result is looking really nice, just an idea you could try. Enjoyed the video very much👍
last tube farthest away from power supply is 71A 4 prong amplifier tube, . replacing wires is like doing spark plug wires, ONE at a TIME. I know mine needs work on the loose side.
Having one of these R60's I think carrying the pwr supply any distance would make me an athelete!. My Radiola does work, I have a 30 foot inside antenna and I get best reception at night. I do have loads of whistling and squealing w some morse trying to slip through. I imagine you have the schematic? I think the R17 has a very similar but filament coil for less than 7 type 27 tubes and probably a 71A for audio amp. I am told by radiolaguy the squealing is due to bad by-pass capacitors. I do have the tapestry style spkr in so-so cond, but just bought two more in better condition.
The 60 needs to be neutralized and the IFs aligned - that will eliminate most squealing and whistling, but this early super tends to be a bit finicky anyway. You can check the capacitors but these capacitors are not rag paper capacitors, but rice paper - they last virtually forever. The later screen grid superhet designs were far better mannered, but by all means, do a neutralizing and alignment following the service notes exactly. To do an IF alignment, you need to remove the tuner tub.
Put the 80 rectifier tube in. if plates of 80 turn red turn power off very quickly as cap or caps are shorted. If plates of 80 dont turn red caps are either good or open.
I have a 60 setting on a shelf waiting for me to distroy it, I mean restore it. The schematics that I have found online are scanned from copies of copies of the original. I can't figure out the values of the capacitors ,can't figure out if the decimals are missing or not. If you could share your ideas of values I would appreciate it. Don't think I will depot them but disconect them and bypass them If I can
I would say one of the filament holes for the 80 will most likely have 2 wires on one of them, they are slightly larger 2 from transformer lite the tube and 1 extra from the filament is for B+ which would go to another box with choke coils and caps to smooth out the ripple. fricken mice!
The Tuning cap really needs to come off and cleaned properly. Just converting the rust in place is in my opinion not good enough. The bottom seems fine except the wiring. So leave that alone, get the tuning cap off derust and treat it. Spray the top after using a gelled derusting compound. Get the top nice and leaves the underside alone.
So why am I not surprised when you say that you care more about your dogs than your viewers? Also, ha, ha, it was very amusing when you bragged that you're an electrical engineer. I have known many, many E.E.s over the years, and very few of them had enough common sense to pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the sole! Time to improve your videography skills and stop the monotone monologues.
With all due respect, Bob, because I know you are very smart and good at what you do, but you might want to spend less time ruminating about imponderables and adopt more of David Tipton's "get right into it" approach. I think it would make your videos more interesting.
With all due respect, the ruminating is part of it. If you don't like it, fast forward or go back to Tipton's videos. The thought process can be just as valuable as the actions taken.
@@HamJamming strange, because for all the dressing up of your comment you tried telling Bob exactly what he should do. Strange that you don't accept the same in return.
@@bzuidgeest So now you are equating a helpful suggestion with telling someone what to do? You are a real sick puppy, Bart! Why do you feel it is your duty to defend Bob Anderson? Don't you think he can defend himself if he disagrees? Go away and grind your axe somewhere else.
@@HamJamming your assuming your comment was helpful. I'm sure Bob can defend himself. But really he should not have to. I enjoy the videos as they are. If you do not, why even be here? Because you sure seem angry to me. It's quite a joke to me how angry you seem to be getting. Are you compensating for something😂?

That is what I am getting on my Radiola60 up on Cape Cod with a 30 foot inside
antenna, lots of pig squealing an whistling but I do get stations.
Cool funky ole piece of electronics.
Good stuff Bob, I love these old ones!
My radiola60 does work, I am on Cape Cod, getting stations in NYC, and Montreal, and Bangor
Maine. a 20 foot antenna and a gas pipe for a ground.
Through the magic of buying two of them!

Yes, thank goodness for that. If all I had to work with was the Riders service info, I'd be in trouble :)
Neat chassis design with the variable tuning capacitor across the top & coupled to the dial gauge, different.

Kept thinking you were going to pull out a spare chassis as well from under your hat.

I've done wire lashing before. I'd just rather not mess up the original if I can avoid it.

There is a surprising development in part 7 of this project. Please watch when you get a chance.
