I really like you paint white color ,it does look brighter and bigger too , your dogs are so lucky to have you like their parent , great channel , subscribed ❤
Painting the basement was a great move. It gives a clean slate to start from and make it easy to find any water issues. Sealing as many openings as possible should help control the little critters that keep sneaking in. The ramp that makes easy for your puppies to get on the porch goes to show how much you love the critters. Only draw back I think Katie should have just burned the directions to the bed frame she made it look so easy. Thanks so much for sharing another adventure.
Thanks so much for continuing to tune in and for the thoughtful comment! It means a lot! 😊 We’ll keep sharing as long as we keep hearing from people like you! You’re awesome!
I found some black rubber mats from Rona 3\4" x12" x24" long. They are very heavy and stay put on a ramp. I also put doggie hand rails so that if my dog lost her footing the rail caught her in the upper body and prevented her from falling off the ramp. There was a three inch space between the edge of the ramp and the side of the house and that's what she stepped into and had to be lifted out. If you make the hand rails human height that ramp is handy when we twist a knee.
Awe! Way to look after your pup! I’ve been planning to do smaller rails to keep Frank on the ramp but hadn’t thought about if we were to use it, maybe a higher rail would be smart too. Thanks for the tip! We use a lot of mats on the floor inside for him. We have like a million yoga mats we will travel with and use at peoples houses if we bring him too. Dogs are family so they get the best!😊
I just now came across your channel & wanted to say I really enjoy it. Love the cabin & what you did to the basement & she did a great job of cleaning up the upstairs & putting the bed together. Great the way you both work together. The cabin is beautiful & seems to be a great size. One thing I particularly wanted to mention was the dogs. They are absolutely beautiful & so sweet looking. I am so very happy what you do for them to make sure they have what they need & are so well cared for & loved. We had a dog who had serious hip issues & a couple of times couldn’t really walk…we would have to pick him up & help him get stable on his feet but still drug one of his hind legs. This went on for a short while as we talked with his vet about what to do. We were looking into surgery when his vet said I want to do one more set of X-rays on his hind legs & hips…found where his right hind leg was slipping from his hip joint…something like that anyway…that issue was fixed then after a bit he could walk so much better & get up without any help & could play some. To see what you did with the ramp to the deck was fantastic & showed how important they are to y’all. They are so important to us & truly give unconditional love. Thank you for this and I’m excited to see how the cabin progresses & how y’all will live your life. Know it’s work but you decided what was important to you and your life there. The very best of luck to all of you especially those sweet adorable “babies”. Also looking forward to watching your videos and seeing what y’all accomplish with the cabin. Stay safe!
Awe, thank you! Glad you found us! We do really love our dogs and I’m glad you can see that. Sorry you went through such a tough time with yours. I’m glad you love yours so much to go through the things you needed to find out what was wrong. We’ll keep including them in the videos, thanks for following along!!
I’ll have to add that to the list of tasks to finish it out. I couldn’t believe it took 3 gallons to get everything covered. I’m sure a gallon would go far though after it’s been coated so well
Hope you guys can get all the storage unit stuff in before the snow starts! How much wood have you ordered? What about winter food storage? So much still to do. Thanks for letting us come along ❤
Thanks for joining the adventure! We picked up our most important things but will probably have to keep some stuff in storage for the winter before making more space for things. Lots of shelves and other things we gotta put up. Canned food. We’ll have a 12v fridge. And a cooler outside we expect. We ordered 4 cords that we’ll highlight next week. We are debating about getting another cord or 2. Can never have enough! So much to do, just waiting for the snow to fly
I would next year french drain that and tar it or coatin with a rubber seal it a life time thing then you never have to worrie about moisture or mold ,dampness!
Yes! This has been my thought after a little research. I was also thinking about board insulation on the outside of the foundation, under the ground. Do you think this might be helpful?
Right!? I couldn’t believe editing the last video what the basement use to look like. So bright and airy feeling now. It was such a damp dungeon feeling before! Thanks for your comment!😊
Great video Matt and Katie. I love how you divide and conquer and get things done. As much as I love the original van build, I am truly digging this off Grid cabin restoration as well! And also that you post on Saturday cause most people post on Sundays!
So much to do, feels like the only way. We have been lucky the snow hasn’t started falling yet, sounds like Nov 1st, there are no guarantees the ground isn’t completely covered til spring up here. Glad you are enjoying the new content! Excited to keep sharing! Hope you had some awesome adventures on the bike this year!!😊
I just subscribed recently to your channel. I enjoy cabin rehabs/builds since we have a small weekend cabin here in WV. We are on grid as far as power goes but have a well and septic. I find a lot of tips and tricks with these that I can use as we do maintenance and small upgrades to our cabin. Love the puppies!
Thanks for the follow! Glad to have you along on our adventure! WVs a great state! Spent some time there when we lived in NC. I actually have a cross country ski camping video on our channel that was in WV. We plan to have a well installed in the future and septic too but probably longer down the road as it is a large investment. I’ll keep sharing anything we do for our cabin and if you ever have a tip to share, please comment. I love to have input about ideas for doing things better. Thanks for your comment here, and we’ll share plenty of the pups too, hehe
I do not know your situation. How much of the cinder blocks are underground? When I helped my father build his house his basement was mostly underground. The inside walls would have water running down them in the heat of summer like condensation on a cold drink glass. This continued until the area was closed in and became a conditioned air space. We had waterproofed the outside with a tar-like coating and put ridgid insulation over that before backfilling against the block. Water was not getting in through the block but in the water vapor in the air. Your situation may be different.
Yes! This has been my plan after researching it more. Hoping to do these things in the spring with a French drain. I have thought a big portion of it has been condensation
Nice job in the basement, that’ll brighten things up! Careful when you purchase firewood. It’s really hard to find true dry firewood. I like to stay a few years ahead to make sure it’s nice and dry and I won’t accumulate chimney creosote.
Thank you! Doesn’t it change the space completely!? Yes, so difficult ! We had word of mouth from locals that’s the guy we bought from is the guy in town. We hope to start stacking wood to season ourselves. We just didn’t have many options at this point in the game. Hoping to get ahead like you said going forward. Thanks for continuing to show up and comment on our videos, it means a lot!😊
Hello from way up north ! Great job guy's your in :) A lot of clean up & painting sure makes it brighter 👍, When you get your wood delivery stack it but don't tarp it like that pile your cleaning up that just makes it sweat & rot, I cover the to but never the sides :) Take care winter is coming :)
Alberta, beautiful province!! Thanks for the comment and the advice. We bought some smaller tarps for just the tops of some stacks we’re making. You are definitely right, that big tarp made for bad conditions in that pile. So not ready for winter, so much to still do! Glad it hasn’t hit us just yet
The primer was actually a mold killer. The concrete paint has a mold resistance component which I might end up still doing a 2nd coat of that as others have suggested it too
Check around for a old oil type heater they call them oil burners work good for back up put heat out like crazy burns about two gallons all night if cold you can find lots of them 250 gallon tanks around fill it up you can run a line right from tank or you can fill it up everynight they have 2 gallon tank on them i have a few just becuase you never no when you need one also you can go wirh oil and wood furnace use oil as back up at night time
I’ll look into those, thanks for the thought out recommendation. We have been thinking about an in wall propane heater as we have a 500 gallon tank for the stove and some lights. One reason I liked the idea of propane was because some have a thermostat that you don’t need electricity for to start up. Then if we are gone the cabin won’t freeze up
@@Trailvagabonds Our cabin has a propane heating system. It is mounted to the main floor (we have a full basement) and the heat rises through a grate in the floor. The beauty part of it is that the thermostat runs on 2 AAA batteries and connects to a thermocouple. If the power goes out we still have heat. It's quiet, reasonably efficient and as long as you have batteries it works.
Hello guys from North Carolina. Love this video and great to see ya'll have moved into your cabin. Matt you are doing good job in basement. Katie putting bed together with ease I'm sure felt comforable that night. Can hardly wait till next video to see what else ya'll get done. Firewood a year round chore. Much love and blessings.....
Thank you so much!😊 Our next video will probably only be firewood, haha! Sooooo much stacking after we had some seasoned wood delivered. Hope you have a great week!
I recently come across your channel and I’m enjoying it very much. I watched the video where you talked about all the flys buzzing around and I have a suggestion for you, Get yourself some Malithion concentrate and mix it up, use a pump sprayer and spray it directly on to the wood siding and the bushes around the cabin …. I use at my family cabin in upper Wisconsin and I can actually sit outside without a shirt in the evening and not get attacked by flys or mosquitos…. I know people don’t like chemicals but using it properly it’s safe for your dogs and your family and it won’t hurt them…. It smells terrible until it dries but after that nothing
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll look into that as we still are dealing with them even as the weather outside is getting colder. Glad you’re enjoying the channel, looking forward to having you along for the adventure and for your future ideas/comments!😊
hey leve it out side, then bring it inn, pitch it in stove. we put whole big pieces on top of heavy bed of coals. split woid is to start fires. used woid all of my life. 72 years old. woman. we burn alot of old dead trees. me pursonaly would burn all that wood. just keep it dry.
After another look we stacked it on the rack on our backyard and hope to use it on the fire. Some of the really falling apart stuff we got rid of but a lot of pieces we are keeping. That’s so cool to hear you’ve been living the life!! I’d love to hear more one day!
Do not use spray foam - it is not ant proof. Get a few tubes of Ancor resin or Butelyn resin. And pump it in with a culking gun, to replace that sill gasket. - Ant magnet.
The price varies by wood type. We found a local guy who was better than average. We ended up getting 5 cords of wood to add to what we already had. In the future we hope to use downed trees from the property or purchase logs that we have to process ourselves as it is much more affordable. We were just really pressed for time with winter on the doorstep that we went with pre-chopped and seasoned. The GZ from empty would take 12 hours to completely charge. We have solar panels we just got out of storage so we hope to be better about topping it up with those. If we think about it, we try to charge well before it’s empty so that we aren’t running the generator for hours and hours. It can get pretty annoying listening to it 😆
Painting block inside holds moisture in the block and causes it to decay, you need a French drain to keep water from going into the block and tar the out side of the block or a concrete foundation sealer then put poly( foam board over the seal coat you put on and back fill with dirt, you have to keep water from going into the block, a french drain will keep hydopressure from pushing water into the block from the footer and floor, good drainage away from the foundation is important, you can pack dirt ontop of a roll of plastic sheeting slanted away from the foundation so water doesn't setup against the foundation

Yes Bora Care best all your wood that not painted inside outside minimum four to one hot water, dilution …cover outside with paint after so it doesn’t leach out. Get all that wood away from your home BUG migration. It also is a fungicide.

You have to stop the water intrusion from the outside. You might have to clear the ground from around the foundation then seal the block.
Hoping to do this in the spring as well as install a French drain

Haha, gotcha. Sometimes saying it out loud makes me feel more confident because half the time I don’t know what I’m doing 😜
Because concrete is porous. You really need to do another coat.
Even with a primer coat? Maybe I’ll go back in do that. Have to add it to the list
