Never clicked a notification so fast. Originnaly composed in 1975 (Also recommend hearing the De Futura live in October 16, 1975 Nancy rehearsal) Probably the heaviest piece of music ever recorded up to that point. De futura is like a proto tech death stoner space jazz fusion symphony from outer space. With the most powerful buildup, and it features what is my favorite bass playing (besides Jaco Pastorius on Havona) and some of my favorite drumming, Vander masters the art of knowing what to do and when to do it at all the right places. Vander had Elvin Jones as a drum teacher at one point, and one can hear that influence in his playing , got some similarities with Tony Williams as well mixed with classical percussion, def in the rank of great seventies drummers. Saw them live in Oslo back in 2019, they played this piece, Vander was still killing it at the age of 71 or so, how good of a drummer is Christian Vander!? so good that for Zess they had to get Morgan Ågren to step in for Vander (since he was doing the vocals for that track, recorded live in studio with orchestra). 😁

3 times for me, each time more apocalyptic than the last. And one of the concerts I was at, I was lucky enough to find on CD! (Chicago 1999- Kohntarkosz, Hhai, Theus Hamtaahk, MDK).

The original name for this composition was De Futura De Hiroshima, which should tell you why you hear such building dread and explosive denouement. This is the masterwork of Jannik Top, and one of the heaviest pieces of music ever recorded. You should see this live- it is incredible. Dread just builds and builds until the piece picks up its pace, ending in shattering echos- mind-blowing music. Consider the level of commitment needed to play this! Here is one live version, using two bassists and pure energy drumming. When you can see Isabelle Fueillebois rocking out there, you know the piece is kicking ass. th-cam.com/video/a3TyvyuKmP0/w-d-xo.html

This drum and bass driven track was the inspiration for the whole Japanese Zeuhl scene with bands like Ruins, Bondage Fruit or Koenjihyakkei. Jannick Top later did a solo album called "Infernal Machine" where he came back to this bass motive.

Everyone has they're own opinion, but it's sad to see all the Magma hate in the comments. Especially in this song, they predicted the future of today's prog bands like Black Midi. They're vocals are used more as another layer to they're already dense masterpieces rather than to take the spotlight. This song is just so great because it is always tossing you around in such a fun but also heart pumping way. 10/10 song and 10/10 band

I think somebody ought to say, "Der Zeuhl wortz mekanik!"
    (So there, you are.)
There's almost a Hawkwind-like space-rock-ness to this. (And almost a new category of musical structure, in addition to rhythm and harmony. Something like "zoom" - with long strings of siren threads flying past from behind your head, overtaking you, and then kicking off to the distance with some extra ... celerity ... just to avoid saying speed. They might be like the notes of a melody, but they're so long that they become their own thing. An incredibly slow melody.
(I've been looking forward to this one. I wasn't disappointed.)
(You might be happy to know that there are several versions of this. Their songs seem to never settle down. They don't just close the project for ammendments on the day of the recording; they keep experimenting with their own music.)

About the song, thah language and whole concept behind this piece...
    1) De Futura (Hiroshima) was invented and offered by their bassist at 1975-76 Janik Top, yes this funny dude in leather jacket and round black glasses.
    2) Whole song is based on single base riff and single singing diftong BÖ!
So the riff is cycled in major phrasing structures ended by caesuras.
And the ever repeated syllable BÖ! is annoyingly repeated over and over in all possible ways until they melt together with that monstrous bass riff into something that will haunt you for a looooong time.
    3) Jainck Top is master-level bassist and had played with almost all major french artists at the time, for example check his mighty bass lines in famous Didier Morouani SPACE project: th-cam.com/video/tUplu2U9MAw/w-d-xo.html
    4) Janik heavy and technically challenging style influenced Magma's sound a lot, so sometimes they sound like real thech-death from 70ths.
    5) Also Jannic brought to concept table of Magma new idea of Orks - an lifeform that is indistinguishable between human and machine. They are far technically advanced, but very narrow minded, that's why their lexicon is based on a few syllables and this is why they are chanting this damn BÖ! all the time.
    6) There is no official myth behind De Futura, although there are many interpretations. In my very own vision, De Futura is a moment of time loop, when Kontharkozs was sent from the past to change the future, but his interference created the time-cycle itself. Kobayans destroying Earth in the original finale of MDK and Kontharkozs was sent by Enemteth-Re to prevent this catastrophic event. But in the end, Earth will be destroyed anyway by the Thermonucler weapon of Kobaiia and so He will/was be sent again to prevent this futile repercussions. So, the Theusz Hamthaak (The Times of Hatred) is encapsulated in the never-ending spiral of violence and death comdemned to eternity. And in the very end, only the comming of transcendental being of ZESS by the holy will of Kreuhn Korman cuts this cycle and proclaims The End of All Times and things: th-cam.com/video/xCF9-k_LnOg/w-d-xo.html

    • @СемёнСемёнов-ы1ь
      @СемёнСемёнов-ы1ь ปีที่แล้ว

@@dieterbohm9700 Oh, I'm glad that my humble comment sparked some interest for the legacy of one of the most notorious band of XX century if not the one.
TLTR: the best way right now is rather complementary video-essay called "The Kobaian Mythology | Not Lost Media" here, on YT.
It is probably the best compilation of all the main points and twists of Magma's rich and extremely perplexing lore available in English.
Fasten your seatbelst, this is gonna be a wild ride!
If I have to add something to this remarkable work of passion, I'd say:
      1) This exact essay is overall great, but still lacking some fact and turns other in a way I would not agree on them.
      2) And this is NORMAL for Magma. There is no any blueprinted official canon. This is as open-minded music as thou could get and it is appropriate for as open-minded listeners who a ready for such an mind-adventures.
      3) Most of the information regarding Magma is available only in french, so... git good in a frankophone world or be satisfied wit the chunks of disjointed information in english.
      4) For a band with lifespan more than HALF OF CENTURY, Magma has gathered a LOT of gossips, myths and other informational noise.
      5) That's why the only ones credible sources of information are band-members themselves and firstly the mastermind behind it all, glorious and mighty Zebehn-Strain-De-Gustah his majesty Chrisian Vander of course.
      6) So, be prepared to fall into the Rabbit's hole full of discoveries, wonders and crazy stuff.
There is no easy way to explain it all in short time and you have to witness and process it all only by yourself.
Firstly, listen to all the studio albums in chronological order.
Booklets from special editions like 40th Anniversary are obligatory to get the context and main ideas behind each LP.
Then you have to search for live records and this is a multilevel trap, that may lead you to hundreds bootlegs.
But the focus should be on the pieces, that were not recorded for some reasons, but was suggested as equal parts of Kobaian myth with Hteusz Hamthaak in first place.
      And you know what?
It was but a surface level!
Only when all the needed pieces of this musical puzzle are collected, absorbed and processed, only then you may begin to listen/read to all the members interviews to get perspective from the very first hands.
Then you will understand just how Magma's tree is tall and how deep in roots go, because Magma Family is sort of a big boiling pot of dozens and dozens of musicians and many wild and different releases.
They may be not having direct connection to the Kobaian mythology, but my may think of them as a "World of Magma presents" everlasting series of inspiration.
Somewhere there you may find yourself finally satisfied and well-fed and finally trying to fill all the many gaps in Magma's mythology for yourself and trying to discuss all the wild fan-theories with the same MagMainiacs :3
It took me years to get the intermediate level of kobaian graduation and now I feeling that the only thing that binds me is my lacking french skill.
Just think of Magma's legacy as of JRRS Arda cycle.
The damn Rings may be his peak, but beneath this peak are many levels of a whole human life sacrificed on the alter of eternal spiritual art.

Many thanks, Justin. I first heard this live in early 76 before the album was even recorded. Couldn't believe my ears. You begin to wonder how on earth they are ever going to end this. Then, suddenly, the most amazing ending comes in. I swear they took this ending at least 3 or 4 levels further when it was live. Unfortunately when Janik played gigs with the band later on, the ending was removed.
I wonder if this was an attempt by Yanik Top to set the future of the band. He left shortly after the album was recorded and the following album changed style completely. It is almost a battle between Janik and Christian for the "Futura" of the band.

Glad you got around to finishing Udu Wudu. I thought might find it interesting that Vander said in this interview that it's very difficult piece to play as a drummer as you both play very rooted to the beat like a metronome and another side you have to have a heavy swing.
    th-cam.com/video/jT64Br86rnE/w-d-xo.html
During the mid 70s and 80s, they experimented a bit with having two drummers. Though in the 80s the second drummer would mostly be there for when Vander took vocal duty.
Even though it's not part of the original album, I would love if you check out Ëmëhntëht-Rê (extrait no. 2) as it's been a bonus track on Udu Wudu for a long time now. It's honestly one of my favorite things Magma ever recorded; Vander vocals are so good, the synths are so fun and the drums are amazing as always.

Regarding the bass sound, Janik Top began as a cello player and when switching to bass, decided to tune his bass in fifths (as I recall) same tuning as a cello, but an octave lower, which means his low E string is a C. That partly explains that growl. Vander uses a bebop kit: 18" bass drum, 5 toms at the time of this recording, all tuned very tight, a high-pitched, dry sound, nothing at all like a rock sound.

Now think of the original Sontarans from Doctor Who. Don't they just belong together? Fabulous piece of music. In fact as i listen this kind of music since seventies, i don't feel them strange at all today, but come back to things to mainstream rock or "metal" sounds often bland and even boring. Why? Because these musicians have a deeper backround and knowlege of music than many known musicians. But you can only discover that by training your mind, and listen more.
