You have transformed my entire game .... my ability to roll ,attack ,DEFEND and ENJOY bjj has changed thanks to your generous sharing of knowledge. I'm 56 yes old and 7 years into my journey. For the past 8 weeks I have studied, taken notes and implemented your genius into my game... results amazing. I train hard and roll regularly and consider myself a student of the game. Last night after rolling a much younger quality brown belt he said , "you won that one". I said" less energy and better defence is my new path" . As I walked out of the gym he called out to me and said , "thanks for the lesson". Over the past few weeks higher belts have asked what I've been studying. PRIIT. Apart from your main topics there are some fantastic tip and tricks along the way if you have eyes to see and ears to listen. Thanks again for your generosity Priit. Thanks

Your turtle system is awesome. It was all I did before the pandemic. Hopefully I'll get back at it SOON!

Are you saying to unlearn toes now? I wasn't sure but I thought I heard you praise a guy rollin doing it but admit I missed the whole seal feet coming out and being a good thing. It must be a leg attack weakness (I'm guessing) since I'd just spin away when they grabbed my ankle in my testing (but our gym doesn't have leg attackers really) but now my feet will not easily go flat -- since I have disciplined the other way. Respectfully, I hope there's more on this toes v seal feet trade off, and the dangers regarding hooking them that standing (or going up) or re-guarding can't cure.

its as simple as them being able to hook under the ankles with their own feet or hands, of course if you stay active it's less of a risk which is why he sort of deliberates it as more advanced if you care about standing up.

    Good stuff as always :)
On a side note: I don't like points in competitions - and how they change the goals. I get why they're there, but I think submission only rules is the real representative of jiu-jitsu. Off course there will not always be a winner in sub-only (unless there's overtime rules), but that raises another question... Isn't it okay to declare a draw if two fighters are equally good/bad?!

If it's a single elimination or repechage tournament, you have to have a winner / loser for each round to decide who advances to the next round; you can't have matches ending in draws. In theory you can do round robin (and sometimes tournament organizers do this), but then you can't run as many events because that takes WAY longer -- you need to run a lot more matches per event bracket. The time management is exacerbated if you use long time limits, (ie, 20+ minutes) which is the preference for black belt sub-only matches. That's why for almost all amateur competition, points with short time limits (ie, 10 minutes for black belt) is the standard.
Also, personally I do not think sub-only is "real" jiu jitsu, it is merely one aspect. There is jiu jitsu for IBJJF rules, jiu jitsu for ADCC rules, jiu jitsu for sub-only rules, jiu jitsu for MMA, jiu jitsu for self defense, etc. They are all quite different in strategy, skills, and goals. One major issue with sub only is that once you get to the expert level, submissions are uncommon unless you have very long time limits. Submissions inside of 10-15 minutes are usually due to a big difference in skill or strength. The other issue with sub-only is that it tends to favor athletes who focus on submissions rather than sweeps and passes. And finally, a major major major problem with sub only is that there is no penalty for stalling. At the black belt level, it's actually quite easy for an inferior athlete to get a draw against a far superior athlete if they just stall.
That being said, the turtle is clearly an underutilized position in most rulesets.

It shouldn’t be a draw if someone is being positionally dominated the whole match though. Sub only has a lot of drawbacks

I've been doing turtle for over 50 years. It was disparaged because striking was allowed. it's a terrible idea without a referee and a rule set to prevent strikes. I agree that even at my age, it's a safe and fun position for sport.
