Using strength to hit is the stupidest unrealistic thing in the world. It is just not a factor in hitting a Target at all. It's disappointing that that nonsense is perpetuated.
I like the way that Shadowdark allows thieves - remarkably - to be half-decent and non-hipeless at doing thief-stuff right from the off - instead of making thiefan unstartable career but an OK one when you've been in ut for a while.
As far as I know, your stats do not cap at 18, only the modifier caps at +4. So you wouldn't loose the point if you put +2 to Dex. But even with Dex 28 your modifier would still only be +4.
@@Heritage367 If stats do cap at 18, then why does it say 18+ with modifier +4 in the stats table? They could have dropped the plus in this case. And I was talking about modifiers from ability scores, not total bonuses. Modifiers cap at +4, total bonus can be higher, as you said, depending on that you roll for talents.
Quick note: In a video at th-cam.com/video/r4ZGQfv4k8k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8lgUzIF9BGFEMRRr Which is a video Kelsey made regarding creating a new Shadowdark character, she notes around 7:55 or a little after that ability scores cap out at 18. Perhaps this changed later, but I’m inclined to believe that was the intent.
When it comes to ShadowDark Halflings, I wonder how many interpret the invisibility as literally "turning invisible and vanishing from sight" compared to making themselves so inconspicuous that they are *effectively* invisible. Personally, I prefer the latter option.
Both for me, sort of. I left the flavor up to my players. One group decided that halflings have some kind of fey ancestry so they went with true invisibility. The other went more for the natural knack for hiding. Both were cool
Ahhh...the old-school Thief class. Just enough skill and abilities to get lots of use in a party...with low enough AC and HP to get you killed in the first encounter. It was always my go-to character for some reason. My first PC to roll-up was a thief back in 1982. Great rolls here tho...
Love the character and the simplicity of making them. Keep in mind that Short Sword is not a Finesse weapon, so STR would be req'd. Get several daggers.
I love the idea of Annie, the little unassuming halfling girl that will rage and slice a finger off while stabbing you like a madman if you cut in line in front of her. 😄 it’s always the small and quiet ones…

I love how happy this guy is to be rolling 3d6 down-the-line :-)
I do love me some Shadowdark and I will take what I get :-)
Remember the Short Sword is not a finesse weapon. So you use your strength to hit. The only melee finesse weapon is the Dagger
That is correct.
@@rodrigosardi08 whoops!
@@Scutifer_Mike they have some more melee finesse weapons in the Cursed Scroll #2 too

Actually stats DO cap at 18 in Shadowdark. Your bonuses, on the other hand, can increase based on what Talents you roll.
