I'm 70 years old and I grew up in Opa Locka. I let at 19 for New York to live with my grandparents. 6 months later I was drafted but I joined the Navy. The Year I was 16 myself and all my friends were either in The Dade County Children's Home in Kendall or The Florida State School For Boys in Okeechobee. the girls were in Kendall or the State school for girls in Marianna. One of the boys ran from Okeechobee so they put him in the boys state school in Marianna.
Opa Locka was one of the worst towns in Dade County.A dirty blue collar town outside an old military base. Opa Locka wasn't a big place but people thought it was because all the unincorporated areas used our postal Zip Code like Carol City and Bunche Park. It was segregated back then. Whites lived on one side of 22nd Avenue and Blacks on the other side. The elementary school on Fisherman Street was segregated. We older kids went to Westview Jr. High. It was also segregated. The first integrated school I went to was Carol City Senior High School. I also went to Silver Oaks High School. The Black kids were next door at Bougainvillea. It's the way it was in those times.
The best thing I ever did for myself was get out of Opa Locka.

I would very much like to connect with them and see how I can support them in getting the skills they need to get out. This makes me want to be more active in helping people build what they want out of life. After we ran out of money the insurance company put us at the Residence Inn. There were several Haitian employees, their kindness and calmness was therapeutic for me I wished we had been there the whole time. Nobody is successful judging people from a feeling. He thinks he can know if someone is fake or not. No he can't he just judges people based on how he feels. HE wont make it in life that way. I grew up in the hood. I don't know how many times people caught me by surprise of who they are really are from what my first thought of them was. Good video, Peter. I’m a native from Miami, and the only thing I wanted to point out is the fact that almost nobody calls the places eastside or westside, at least people from my generation. The younger kids might. In the beginning when they mentioned eastside, you were in North Miami, a city of its own. It’s in the Northeast of Dade County, hence them calling it eastside. When you were by the alley, they mentioned something about 127, so you were off NW 127th street somewhere. You were driving off 135th which is Opa-Locka, and the alley might’ve been unincorporated Miami-Dade if I’m correct. Pack Supermarket is off NE 2nd Ave in the Little River area, really close to Little Haiti. Little Haiti and Overtown are neighborhoods in the city of Miami. Overtown and Liberty City are the worst areas of Miami. Liberty City has more crime, but it’s also bigger than Overtown. Just giving you some insight about the areas you were in.

The surprising thing is that the subtext of violence is subtle yet unpredictable. The streets appear calm and fairly well maintained without any of the obvious signs of “social problems”. What is really driven home is the psychological impact of violence and its omnipresent effects through the boys’ own expressed anxiety that they can never be caught off guard. So many of us take for granted that we can mostly go about our daily lives without fear. The fact that they remain so positive is a testament to their strength, perseverance and ingenuity.

I am from Eastern Europe and I can relate so much to some of the rough areas in there, every time I see stuff I can relate to it gets to my mind that we're all the same no matter which side of the ocean we are. The only difference is that we don't have so much danger around us even in the bad areas because generally we don't have so much guns on the streets and police is very strict on possesion. I love taking a peek in the real life of Miami cause all I've seen is flashy beaches with big buildings and perfect looking neighbourhoods so that was nice to see too.

The wisdom flowing from Jeffrey's mouth; 'this is everyday, you get used to everyday!" Only when you leave and come back do you see things can change. Rich is NOT permanent. Wealth is a mindset that goes far beyond money. The fact that these young, black men CHOOSE TO SEE the other side, hope and reach for it.... hope for the next generation!

Love the videos, Peter. Glad you and the wife are taking some time off though. Your content is what the world needs more of now more than ever. I live in the UK, I've vacationed in America many times but only get to see the tourist perspective, I've recently discovered your channel and have been binge watching your video's, tbh in the uk our media coverage of the inner cities is very negative, we are only really shown the violence and crime, very rarely anything positive, your video's have been an eye opener to the real people and how positive, intelligent and how aspirational they are, I especially loved this video and wish them all the best for the future and I'm sure they will follow thier dreams and achieve thier goals

From the short moment that I have lived in the hood due to finance reason, I quickly realized that although there are some who just like that life, there are many who just don't even know what the other side looks like. Once they've been around me or others who have been on the other side, they quickly realized just how much they have in self power and self motivation to change their own life. Just ask this young man here got a chance to see the difference, and has a better understanding how to work towards it. I honestly think a lot could change just by exposure, but we all know that many the people who says that they're organizing to make change, don't want change to happen. Rather keep whatever donations in their pockets.
