  • You are going to love this! Such a fun project that makes the most beautiful christmas ornaments. Perfect for your holiday decorations but absolutely lovely for gift giving! When you need a little hostess gift, teacher gift...
    If you run into any issues check out the Live I did addressing some of the most common questions: • Alcohol ink Ornaments Q&A
    Also... I did two variations of this, one with glitter: • Alcohol Ink Baubles wi...
    And one with a mirrored backing: • Making Mirrored Alcoho...
    You can pick up the alcohol ink at www.queenbeecreationshome.com or your local craft store. This works equally well with glass balls as with plastic so if you have small children or curious cats feel free to use clear plastic - they will look just as lovely as the glass!
    Alcohol Inks: www.QueenBeeCreationsHome.com (or a local craft store like Michaels)
    Acrylic Paint: I am using Meeden Titanium White Studio Acrylic paint. I originally purchased it from Amazon… I don’t see it there but know it is a Heavy Body Acrylic, not Soft Body or Fluid. There are other brands of the Heavy Body/Studio paint here: amzn.to/3ES1s12
    Sealer: Krylon Clear Glaze: I got mine from Michael’s, Amazon pricing was crazy!
    Or a polyacrylic spray of your choice from the Hardware store
    UV Protectant: Krylon UV Archival Varnish : amzn.to/3ueMMnx (or try Michaels or DeSerres)

      There are many that do the alcohol ink on the outside of the ball (which requires sealing) but... the ink gets everywhere! This method - it's all contained and very little mess - and... bonus... they are beautiful!!

    Hi Cindy, I love using Alcohol Ink in my Christmas decorations. I always use a white paint to make the colours zing. My worry has been does the white paint have to dry before putting on the top or can you leave it wet. If the paint stays wet does it make the inks run? Mine seem to so I'm wondering if I am wetting them too much. What are your thoughts?

    • @QueenBeeCreations
      @QueenBeeCreations  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely Let the white paint dry before closing the ball. I leave mine sitting upside down so any excess drains… allowing things to dry faster. There is a discussion in the comments thread about the best choice for the white paint and I’ve dropped a lot of that info into the description of the video for reference

  • @cindybrewer2040

    • @QueenBeeCreations
      @QueenBeeCreations  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The alcohol evaporates so quickly on its own, not sure why you'd want to... also a little hesitant to test out the flammability of the alcohol to the amount of heat applied?

    • @QueenBeeCreations
      @QueenBeeCreations  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Two options…. Some will spray the outside of the balls with a UV protectant sealer to prevent the inks from fading over time. I don’t bother. Some mention experiencing issues with their acrylic paint ‘pulling’ the alcohol ink off the ball. If so.. you can spritz in some sealer between the inks and acrylic. I haven’t had this issue so don’t do that either… which is why you didn’t see it in the video.

    • @QueenBeeCreations
      @QueenBeeCreations  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don't have to buy the huge pump jug... just a size that works for you. Check in the description for the 'type' of acrylic that works best and use it. If it comes in tubes... great. if not, you could dilute some down and put it into a squeeze bottle (for ease of getting it in the ornament)

    Such beautiful pieces! I tried this last year, but I could never get the acrylic paint to dry inside the ornament…. Even though I turned them like you suggest. Maryrenee... I generally let it dry overnight, turning them every so often to ensure that the coverage of the white remains consistent. I leave them propped so that the hole remains fully exposed to the air, not sitting flat on a surface, closing it off. Hope that makes sense.

      To piggyback on her comment, how much acrylic paint do you put in the ornaments? I tried your technique this weekend after letting the alcohol ink dry for a week and when I added the acrylic, it pulled a good deal of the ink off. So now I have a much more muted looking Christmas ball. So how much water do you add to your paint to make it as fluid as it appears to be?

    • @QueenBeeCreations
      @QueenBeeCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm... never really measured... maybe a teaspoon? and half a teaspoon of water? I buy the acrylic paint in a big jug (because of classes) with a pump action on top - so... one pump. It's fairly thick so just enough water to make it 'move' but not to make it too runny. So... the consistency of a melted milkshake, not cake batter...???

      I have used Ranger and Pinata Alcohol inks with no problems. The type of Acrylic paint I used back when i filmed this (and is still the type I am using since I bought a big jug) is listed in the description of the video. some people had posted that there is a difference in the 'type' of acrylic paint so I have also included that in the description also (who knew???). I am only adding water to my acrylic if/when it is too thick to 'move' inside the ball otherwise and only enough to get it to move. You do not want it too 'wet'. You could try spraying a coat of a waterbased acrylic clear coat after the inks and before the white acrylic and see if that helps you. I haven't had to do that but it would be my next move. Conversely... I did just experiment with using glitter instead of acrylic paint at all (video posted a couple of weeks ago on the channel) and it works great... I like the ease of the version with just using the inks and the sparkles inside the ball... holding up great since filming.

      They truly are as lovely as they seem... sorry to tease you with them! It is often easy to take things (like accessibility to supplies) for granted here. The technique works equally well for plastic and would work on non-traditional items too... maybe you're looking at taking the original concept and applying it to a different project entirely.

      It sounds like too much paint. If you have excess it will take forever. You just need enough to lightly coat the inside, highlighting the alcohol inks. Try upending them over a cup to get rid of the excess and then dry them… rotating periodically to ensure that they retain an even coating.

    Hi there! Amazed at how these turned out. Stunning... Question: is a sealer necessary?

    • @QueenBeeCreations
      @QueenBeeCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't use a sealer with mine and haven't had an issue. Others were mentioning they were having trouble with the 'acrylic' seeming to wash away their inks. Likely this was because the inks were not fully dry before the acrylic paint was added, the acrylic paint was the thin kind rather than studio/thick body acrylic but I suggested that they could try 'sealing' the inks before adding the acrylic if that would help them. The exception for me is if I do the 'mirrored' alcohol ink balls (yes, there's a video for that on the channel) in which case the mirroring effect spray will wipe out the inks if no sealer is used.

    I am having a lot of trouble getting the ink to dry properly (stay in place) inside plastic baubles. I've tried everything I can think of but the outcome is always drippy and blurred, even with longer ink drying time. I want to make these so badly because they look simple and beautiful. Any tips other than switching to glass?

    • @QueenBeeCreations
      @QueenBeeCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brianna... I mostly use glass but have used plastic without an issue. The ink should dry fairly quickly, especially if using the canned air, since the alcohol evaporates. If you're finding that you perhaps 'lose' some of the ink when adding the acrylic, maybe try spraying a polyacrylic coat over the ink before adding the acrylic. It sounds like your alcohol inks weren't staying in place though... which I've never seen happen... they like slick surfaces. However, when you add more inks (like a second colour) to those already in the ball know that the alcohol in the second ink reactivates the first and they start moving around again. Therefore you can't fully 'layer' your colours on top of each other like you might with paints. If that's what you're trying to do then I would suggest you need to put a coat of poly between each ink layer to separate them. Hope that makes sense???!!!

    I was hoping you could offer some advice. I have two adorable kittens (gremlins really) and so thinking ahead to my Christmas tree, I decided to make plastic ornaments with the alcohol ink on the inside. I let my ornaments dry for a week before adding acrylic paint to back the alcohol ink. The acrylic paint is actually pulling color from the alcohol ink and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. You said it's basically foolproof but I'm goofing up somewhere. When I pour in the white acrylic paint and shake it around, it eventually pulls the color off of the inside of the ball and even sometimes I have places where it was covered with white paint and then the white paint drips off and I'm left with just clear plastic. Any suggestions on how to add the white paint, or silver or gold, without making the alcohol inks bleed? I am brand new to this and any tips would be incredibly helpful. I wondered if it was the brand of acrylic paint or maybe I'm not putting enough water in my paint to move it around so I'm using too much paint. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help. And I really enjoyed watching your video. You make learning fun.

      Hi Lisa... sorry to hear you`re having challenges with this! I mostly do the glass ornaments... simply because they sell better but I definitely understand the need for plastic with Kittens!! I have done a couple of plastic ornaments in the past and didn`t have this issue but... given you are... I would suggest maybe getting a spray polyacrylic sealer and, when the alcohol ink is dry, give it a couple of coats of the sealer. That might work to seal the ink in and give your acrylic paint something to grip to. Let me know how it goes since others may be experiencing the same issue

    • @QueenBeeCreations
      @QueenBeeCreations  ปีที่แล้ว

      The drying time is really a non-issue for the alcohol ink... it dries very quickly. It's really the acrylic paint. However, when you add it in just keep them propped up and rotate them periodically as they are drying (I usually just use an empty egg carton but plastic cups work too) to ensure the paint continues to stay nicely coated. If the coating isn't too thick overnight generally is enough!

      Hi Bonnie! My acrylic paint is super thick so I add just a touch of water to allow it to 'move' within the ball. If yours moves enough for you to shake it around and coat the inside then don't thin. I haven't had it not adhere before but if you are experiencing that then try spritzing in a little spray sealer over your alcohol ink before applying the acylic... that might help you not lose the inks also.

      Cindy…. This was a duplicate question… she posted it twice… which is why this went unanswered… my apologies. Mine have always dried..l typically overnight is enough though it could take longer depending upon the weather… hear… humidity. The acrylic paint will dry and seal itself. However I added a tiny bit of water to help it move within the bauble since it is thick. However, adding too much water will break down the integrity of the sealer in the paint. No more than 10-15% water to paint to prevent that from happening. In the description for this video I give you a descrIption of the ‘type’ of acrylic paint I’ve found that works … which is the important part… not brand

      Florence... the alcohol ink dries quite quickly... as the alcohol evaporates. However, since it is inside the ball and needs to evaporate through the little opening it's a little slower. Dry time will be dependent upon how much ink you added and the environment but well within the 5 minute mark! Make sure you fully dry the acrylic paint before adding the hanging cap though because it won't dry more once it is closed off!

    Can you use calligraphy ink to do this ornament?

    • @QueenBeeCreations
      @QueenBeeCreations  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Kathie... I have never tried. the beauty of the alcohol inks is their transparency. That said though... regardless of how opaque or transparent the calligraphy inks are it may still work well with them - affording a different look. Things to consider... The acrylic that I'm adding is water based, while the alcohol inks, of course, are alcohol based. Therefore, once dry, the alcohol inks are not typically disturbed by the water based product coming in contact with them. If you want to try it with the calligraphy inks and are unsure of their reaction to the acrylic... maybe drop a small amount of the inks on a piece of plastic wrap, let dry, top with a bit of the watered down acrylic and then pick up the plastic wrap (put a plate or something beneath it to help with that) and roll the acrylic paint around to see if it starts to reactivate and move the inks. If they stay in place you should be good.

      Minutes? If you are using the canned air to 'blow' the ink around then the ink will be dry when you can no longer move it. If you are dropping the ink and and swirling/shaking it around it will take a little longer. Generally I'm working on 4 balls at a time if I'm looking to complete and sell them as a 'set'. By the time I've finished with the ink in the 4th ball I go back to the first and add the acrylic paint.

      If you have just a thin coating of the acrylic paint then mine are typically dry overnight. The draining of the excess paint is important to help this process. If there is too much paint then not only will it take longer to dry but the acrylic may be very thick and then crack during drying. You just want enough paint to give you that 'backing' colour. Just enough to coat.

    • @QueenBeeCreations

      Absolutely! Though... if adding the glitter omit the white or you won't see it! If you add it into the ornament right after the alcohol ink has dried then it will remain 'loose'... not likely to stick. Could be a good look... like a sparkly snow globe effect! If you want it to 'stick' as a background to the alcohol then I would spritz in a spray adhesive and then add the glitter - and SHAKE! I haven't tried this so the only thing I would recommend is to double check your spray glue and make sure it does not contain any alcohol - which would reactivate the inks.

      Sorry, sun catcher, not sun bather 🙄

      Without the white they are lovely but… definitely like a sun catcher… they would need the light to show off the colours.

    Please help us! We found this great video and have been having such fun creating ornies. Now we're working on NEXT holiday season but we have a few questions. Is your acrylic a certain high quality brand or just the cheap stuff (mine is Craft brand) since so much is used to coat? We've added some water to make it runnier but it tends to streak inside the glass balls. Next: we also find that the water-based acrylic reactivates the AI somehow and then distorts the beautiful AI designs we're making. Do you know why? For instance, today the white acrylic totally diluted the Botanical inside and turned it into a mere whisper of green. The blue used with the botanical bled pink into the acrylic since red is a pigment in blue. I am using Ranger and Pinata inks, nothing off-brand, only the "good" stuff. I am using a hair dryer after the inks to MAKE SURE the insides are dry before moving to acrylic. Any help or hints would be much appreciated. Ann and Kris - Minnesota fans

      Hey there Ann and Kris! There has been much discussion in the past comments about many of these issues so don't hesitate to look back. I have posted the exact type of white acrylic I have used in the description... apparently others have commented that the 'type'... not brand matters. I lucked out with the one I bought apparently!! Some people experienced the 'bleeding' of colour you described (though some never had it... go figure!!) and their solution was to add a topcoat layer between the alcohol inks and the acrylic. That worked for them and you might want to give it a 'go'. I do have a video I did with some troubleshooting comments so you can check that out too and see if that helps at all. th-cam.com/video/S5_6LPkX69E/w-d-xo.html
      I also did a version using 'glitter', with no acrylic... that video is here: th-cam.com/video/CL3Bdk669KU/w-d-xo.html I did three version of the glitter ornaments (if I'm remembering correctly) but ran a couple of classes using my favourite version - the one with wet ink and glitter added directly into the ball. Everyone's turned out fantastic and that is definitely my preferred no-fail version. Different results with varying the colour of the ink, the colour of the glitter and even varying the size of the glitter itself.

    Hi, can you share where you get your glass ornaments wholesale?

      Hi there!! I originally got them from AliBaba but... They don't carry the same that I purchased in the past, definitely not at the same price so... I am currently looking for a new bulk supplier myself!
