My Philosophy: I love music. I love all kinds of music. And I go into every album wanting to love it, so that’s my starting point for every review. Keep in mind, though, that music is a very personal thing. An album may hit me personally in a very different way than it hits you. That’s complexly natural and unavoidable, which is why I try to include some personal context in my reviews. It’s so you’ll have a better idea where I’m coming from. In the end, it’s still just my personal opinion, which is inherently biased, and which you may or may not agree with. Hopefully, once in a while, we’ll find common ground.

It's not massacre. It's massacree, which essentially means a series of absurd events.

That’s correct but other than that it’s a great bit of history for the young generation that might for some reason actually sit and listen to that song and wonder what the hell he’s rambling about because they’re probably not getting any history lessons anymore. I wonder if young men even are aware that they could be drafted into service.

I'm an Aussie. I was introduced to Alices restraunt in 1999 by an ex-Viet vet. In all my years as a DJ and involved in music I had never come across it. Go figure. It wasn't played on commercial radio here. I played it a hundred or more times over to absorb the story which is exactly as described and i still love it and play it on My radio show every so often.

It’s not as “radio friendly” as most 3 minute pop songs, that’s for sure. But I’m glad to hear it gets airtime on shows with a more open format!

I heard it many times as a child but it became a family tradition after my girls were born in 98. We listen to it many times during the holiday season but it's guaranteed to be playing at 12 noon every Thanksgiving no matter where we are

I think this song may have been partially responsible for the absolute gem that is the Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams (radio play, books, cartoons, movie, towels, etc.), and I make frequent references to both HHGTTG and Alice's, sometimes both in the same paragraph. The description of the Selective Service Intake reminds me so much of Vogons, with their callous and officious ways... and many other similarities in the style of humor and _social commentary._

Thanks for reviewing the old record and thanks for getting most of it right. One, but important thing (there's a few unimportant things) is at the end where you talked about the draft. The events took place in 1965 and subsequent dealings with the draft board took place in 1966 (the following year). The lottery number system wasn't instituted until around 1969, years later. The statement that my number never came up is an error. I was classified 1A but indeed as the song states was found to be unsuitable for military service due to a prior arrest of littering. That absurdity is what makes the song - well, the song. Happy Thanksgiving!

I would be very interested to hear what the “unimportant things” are! My family has listened to this on vinyl every Thanksgiving for as long as I can remember. It’s a difficult holiday season for us this year. We just lost my aunt. She loves Alice’s Restaurant and all your music! We all do. Most of us have seen you in concert at least once. My mom had the idea to take a pilgrimage to Stockbridge in my aunt’s memory this Thanksgiving. I think cooking without her sister is going to be too hard for her. Visiting all the original sites of the Massacree will bring us lots of laughs and lots of healing. Thank you for being part of our family all these years, Mr. Arlo.

Happy Thanksgiving. Watched again as I will be listening to Alice’s Restaurant again today. Did go to the restaurant and church last summer as planned. The restaurant most recently called Theresa’s is closed, so we ate at the General Store out front called Main St. Cafe. Of interest, the Police Officer’s Station is right near the restaurant. The restaurant may be half a mile from the railroad tracks, but the church is farther away from the restaurant than expected- not really within normal walking distance.
In fact, the church is about 6 miles away in the next town over-Great Barrington- and even closer to the railroad tracks. Guthrie now owns the church and has been renamed the Guthrie Center. The Guthrie Center is a community center and concert venue. Unfortunately, the scheduled concert during our stay nearby was canceled. But the day we were there was a Wednesday and on Wednesdays they serve lunch to the community. The community invited us to have lunch with them, but we had just had lunch at the restaurant. I didn’t want to be unneighborly so I did join them for the bread pudding that couldn’t be beat and bought a Group W Bench pin for my hat.

This was wonderful, thank you!! I bought the album back in the 60's mostly because it was a catchy tune and I liked the cover. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the lyrics until a few months ago and realized that it was a protest song. I didn't know that "The Massacree" was based on a true story! Your presentation was great, thanks again!

'Massacree' not massacre. A Massacree is, if you had even bothered to look it up, is defined as: (dialect) A bizarre and improbable sequence of events creating great confusion and fuss, which you have to agree perfectly fits the story as told in the song.
If that is indicative the paucity of your research, then, I for one am not inclined to listen to the rest of ramble.

The only problem I have with this video is that the Draft Lottery didn't start until December 1969. That was two years after the song came out. I know this because at that time I was already in boot camp.

It's pah-kahn pie, not pee-can pie. Pee-can is the container in your tent you use while camping to avid the rabid raccoon, skunks and hungry flying monkeys lions between your tent and the campground restrooms. (Saying pee-can pie can also make you ineligible for the draft.) That aside,I do appreciate the information on the song.
