For anyone that has been trying to find it, the first shipment was very low, and sold out extremely fast. Fantasy Flight has not announced the next wave, but will not be in the next two weeks. It is unknown if there will be more copies in time for Christmas at this time. The normal price is $80, so be careful not to support scalpers ;)
Nicholas Hayes keep in mind. Publishers have to pay licensing for IP which affects prices. Fluxx for example, almost all the licensed versions are $5ish bucks more than the non licensed versions.
The Game Getaway I understand that, but the big box game is only $50 on coolstuffinc.com (albeit out of stock) and both are published by FFG. If it was a different publisher, I could maybe understand it a bit more, but considering that a much larger game with the same licensing is priced $30 cheaper, I think they are trying to capitalize on the popularity of the IP and the previous game system together. I get why, because of course they are in it to make money, but it seems like some gouging in my opinion. I may be totally wrong and just not know all of the details, but that's how it feels. I do think that GoT Catan looks very interesting, and it's one that I would definitely pick up if I found it for a more affordable price. The IP doesn't do much for me, though, so that may be why I'm reluctant to pay a high price (despite my love for Catan because it got me into the hobby).
Nicholas Hayes I just checked and Cool Stuff has it listed at $67.99 out of stock. Not $50. The box itself is significantly thicker and heavier than regular catan, it comes with 40 minis. Component wise it is on par with other games with comparable components.
Pros: The new board and pieces look amazing (you can use the board to play regular Catan too, which I love). Also, the full-size resource and development cards are a huge improvement over the smaller cards of regular Catan. The addition of character cards also adds a fun new angle, and there are many more strategies to win as a result. Things to tweak: There's a typo on the cards each player uses to organize pieces (it says "Keep" twice, in two places, where one should say "Guard"). Not a dealbreaker, I hope they issue replacements or something. I also hope they add more character cards or change the rules around a few of them. We've played more than a dozen games, and several characters are just too low-value to ever use / some are a little too powerful and get snatched up a little too quickly. Also, the blue and the black pieces are just a little too close; it would help if the blue was lighter or some other color altogether. Last, if the Wall were clear plastic instead of grey, it would help all players be able to see the Wildlings adding up on the other side. None of these are major issues, though--just things that I hope get improved over time. Final verdict: SO MUCH FUN! A must-have for any fan of Catan. 9 people found this helpful
@@captainmanacles it was a rules update. And it actually made some heroes useful. Before the change, some heroes wouldn't be picked until late game because wildlings take too long to move towards the players
be sure to count your components. Many people, myself included only got 14 roads of each color and the box says 15. and Samwell is a misprint since both of his sides are the "A" side. Mine is also missing 2 development cards, came with 25 but box says 27.
Totally agree about Rulebook. Didn't realize how the Wildlings worked until the end of my first play-through. This was after having read the rulebook at least 3 times.
I have never played Catan, and my husband just gave it to me. I think I will try playing just the Catan part of it and then add the GOT stuff. I am glad they have it separate in the rules.
Hang on... it’s slightly shorter than the base game??? My first GOT Catan game took us 3 HOURS! We played three games in one day last week... totalling 5hrs of play! To get it under an hour you have to have someone keeping an eye on the wildlings (someone who can tell the difference between them helps too). You have to know the rules backwards and forwards... And btw... you don’t have to roll the grey dice 🎲 on every turn... only when a wildling is in the camp.
At my Target they had a couple out on shelf last week but price not marked right. At register it rang $80 so I said "no thanks" to this thematic upgrade since I'm not wild about the design of the basic plastic Catan elements-and at first I was expecting this introduced more of the Cities and Knights to the theming also, which it doesn't.
It's probably the best variant I've seen so far. Very simple additions that at the same time add a good amount of extra strategy elements to playing. That being said, Catan was great as a pioneer in the early days of board games, but in the grand scheme of modern gaming....it's an okay game, not amazing or anything. So you have a good expansion to an okay game, probably not worth $60, but if you disagree with me about Catan and think it's really fun, then it's probably worth it to play this variation.
manh they should make a vikings edition of catan only then i would even buy any other edition or version of catan i really want vikings editions so bad as catan even originated from them
This is wrong....the Wildlings start at the hottest fire, not at the back of the line (even tho it would make more sense for them to start at the back).
Just got this game. The rules could be more clear, particularly regarding the wildlings. Now Tormund starts at his camp, but how does he move exactly? one tile at a time or does he jump where ever?
He moves when you roll a 7, just like the robber in the base game. Essentially, he is off the board until a player rolls a 7 and then moves him to a hex and steals from another player.
There seems to be a lot of typos, on the play card the build cost for guards is named keep, there is no "B" side for the Sam Tarly hero card. FF games are nomally pretty locked down but this game seems to of had no one look it over before signing in off to go the the printers.
It creates an interesting ecosystem. If it looks like you might lose from the wildlings breaking through the wall too many times, then the person with the most guards on the wall wins, so everyone wants to put guards on the wall, so then the wildlings don't break through. In theory. The wildlings tend to move so fast, once they pop up, the dice may not make it around the table before an attack. Maybe this isn't as much of a problem late game when you have enough resources to keep all sections of the wall manned, but I've played twice and we never made it to late game.
Maybe you mean Catan is becoming those - Munchkin, Love Letter and Dead of Winter are board games, like Catan. Game of Thrones is an IP. Like Star Wars. Or Marvel. Or Cthulhu. Or Lord of The Rings. "So this is Catan meets Castle Panic. Catan Panic." And of course there was in 2001 the Settlers of Catan Great Wall expansion/scenario with the same mechanics, with wall breakthroughs, etc. - long before Castle Panic.
I'm referring to one game IP being used in a different game (Munchkin Loot Letter, Munchkin Panic, etc.) Funny, maybe I should've included Castle Panic & Catan in that list. I wasn't aware of all Great Wall expansion.
I own catan and 2 expansions and have thought about getting rid of them for this game. But knowing that i'm not really a fan of game of thrown, I will pass on the opportunity. Surprisingly, the game isn't a rarity as people think. I think knowing that it's catan and the ip licensing, people probably know how light the game will probably feel for the price that it is asking for. I think hbo is taking advantage of the game of thrones franchise.
Tom looks like he has wildling migration wrong. Rules say you deploy them at the hottest fire, not toward the back of the trail as Tom appears to suggest when he is moving the Giant around. I agree. The rules are brutally unclear regarding wildling movement/deployment.
Saw this today at Target for $63.99 on sale. The box is so heavy. Wildlings are so pointless in this game unless it’s player control. Make it this way assuming it’s 4 players. The board split two sides. Both have identical lands. Two lands are separate by gates. The goal is to build enough resources that you can send squads, armies into attacking neutral gates. Then have enough 5 guards to break a wall, and finish the other side off at their headquarter.
Yeah, they literally look like lumps of shit. The original wooden ones look better so i will probably do the same. The miniatures also look under-utilized.
That's . . . that sounds a lot like the "Barbarians" module with the adviser/assistant added in. Doesn't strike me as worth any more than "Traders and Barbarians", And I can use T&B with the base set or other expansions. I'll pass.
There’s never a 7 marker. When a 7 is rolled it moves Tormund (who acts as robber in regular Catan). He looks like a regular wildling only he’s the only white one
and that is bad, because...? every board game in the existence is made because of money. and because for joy of people. i bet thousands will love this game, so mission acoomplished.
I get why the game was made and there is nothing wrong with that. I just don't understand why people like it. If I wanted to play Catan, I would just play Catan. GoT theme is so disjointed from the mechanics of this game that it's painful to watch...
Lets be real here, Catan is the biggest trash, euro game ever made. Want a good new game from Fantasy Flight this holiday season? Get Civilization: New Dawn. Easy for new players to get into but still complex enough for vets to min-max their own civilization.
I was interested until I saw $80 base price. That's way too much for a Catan game, even if it is a very interesting sounding twist on it!

Barnes & Noble seems to have it.... use code PRESENTS for 20% off

You know nothing about Catan, Jon Snow!
Wildlings don't start towards the back of the camp, they migrate to the hottest available fire closest to the clearing.
This is true, and brutal. I don't know how the game is playable this way.
@@captainmanacles it was a rules update. And it actually made some heroes useful. Before the change, some heroes wouldn't be picked until late game because wildlings take too long to move towards the players

And what can we do if we're missing pieces? 'Keep' is also listed twice on the building card...
just google fantasy flight missing pieces and open a ticket and they will send
Totally agree about Rulebook. Didn't realize how the Wildlings worked until the end of my first play-through. This was after having read the rulebook at least 3 times.
The minis are really cool, but it seems unnecessary for adding to the price.
I have never played Catan, and my husband just gave it to me. I think I will try playing just the Catan part of it and then add the GOT stuff. I am glad they have it separate in the rules.
Worth noting the game allows for a standard game of Catan to be played, as well as this Game of Thrones version.
I realize Tom ignores price, but the buzz from Gencon was this game was overpriced.
when I first saw this at Target it was $80!!! NO way worth it.
I did recently get it on clearance for $25 so that's cool :)

10:29 It's "puzzle piece board" because it's designed to work with the 5-6 player expansion.
If a wall is breached, does it go away from the game?
And if so is there a way to get it back? If the wall goes, can you no longer build guards?
The wall stays
Jon Snow is in the 5 - 6 player expansion.
That's good to know. I own the 5-6 player expansion but haven't used it yet.

Does is bug anyone else that Tom calls them "Wildings"?
@thedicetower in this game the the initial trade rate is not 4:1 like in Catan, on this game is 3:1
Pedro Lobo He was explaining the base game first and the Brotherhood rules afterwards. ;)
My Target had it on clearance for 50% off the 80$, so I picked it up. Don't pay full price for this.
Yeah, Target still has it for around 63 dollars. Just price matched it.
Can you play regular catan with this?
I love both GoT and Catan, but this looks like a expensive variation.
it is worth!

Why would you tell me you were confused about how wildling movement worked but not tell me how wilding movement works
How many victory point tokens did you guys receive? Since 10 is needed to win, among others gathering VP, mine only came with a measly 8 tokens.
What happens when wildlings come through?
Tragic victory seems weak for a rule

GAme of thrones version looks very interesting
So this is Catan meets Castle Panic. Catan Panic.
Game of Thrones (& Dead of Winter) are becoming the new Munchkin & Love Letter of boardgaming.
Maybe you mean Catan is becoming those - Munchkin, Love Letter and Dead of Winter are board games, like Catan. Game of Thrones is an IP. Like Star Wars. Or Marvel. Or Cthulhu. Or Lord of The Rings.

I agree. The rules are brutally unclear regarding wildling movement/deployment.
Can someone explain how the rush mechanic works?
When a breach happens and 2 wildings get over... Does that count as 1 breach or 2?
Yes
I didn't understand the 12 sides die. What happens when it shows 12?
Just one problem here...it`s still just Catan :/
Catan combined with Expansion "Friends" and "Cities and Knights" and reskined.
What a great mix.
Striking similarities between this game and just having base catan plus helpers variant plus oil springs

These settlements look like dog poo. Man am I glad I have the good old wooden Catan...

They probably didnt get the rights to use the likeness of the bigger main characters? Who knows

who treats their board games like this?!?! at 1:27...
Sounds like it is a re-skin of the Great wall scenario with some additions. Too similar for my taste.
Thanks Tom!
I said GOODDAY SIR!!
could one play regular catan aswell with this set?
Yes
Anyone knows if theres an extention for more players?
Stav Azimi there is. You can find it on amazon
Jon Snow is in the 5=6 player expansion
Still no 7's and I saw no robber, is that how to get rid of wildlings beside Ygrette?
Charles McCoy development cards (patrol cards can remove wildlings)
There’s never a 7 marker. When a 7 is rolled it moves Tormund (who acts as robber in regular Catan). He looks like a regular wildling only he’s the only white one
Hello! Can you please tell me where i can get the cards tray from?
There are 2 card trays that come with the game
Cool, take my money please.
Now I want. Catan Panic! ;D
Was hoping for Starks, Lannisters and Targyrian's battling it out :( wildlings is kinda silly now with the later seasons..
Does this also come with an extension pack ?
Yes, check on Amazon
This sounds like a weirder and less fun version of Catan Cities & Knights
No Jon Snow? This is FFG man. Jon Snow will be in the expansion! 😆
Looks nice. But not worth 90 Euro's
So they just used the A game of thrones the card game artwork? cheap move
No John Snow😮 Im out!
Now every euro game basically needs cool minis? This new trend is just...
...AWESOME!
Yep, cool minis...or not :)
Would you prefer everything go to....chit?
I like this trend. Dress up those boring as F**** cube laden euro games.
"While-ing"
"Wilding"
"Whyling"
Wildling isn't that hard to say.
why...? just why...?
money, just money.
though to be honest it's the first version of Catan I kinda want to buy >
because. $$$
and that is bad, because...? every board game in the existence is made because of money. and because for joy of people. i bet thousands will love this game, so mission acoomplished.

Looks interesting to me and I've never played catan or watched this hbo show. so there.
Honestly, every time they show the scene of them dumping all of the game's parts on the floor I have a mini panic attack lol....
Lets be real here, Catan is the biggest trash, euro game ever made.
Want a good new game from Fantasy Flight this holiday season? Get Civilization: New Dawn. Easy for new players to get into but still complex enough for vets to min-max their own civilization.
