And you learn so much, too. Not just chinese words, or little cultural tidbits, but also incredibly valuable cooking tips that can be applied to whatever you're cooking!! A++ channel right here.
When I hear your dads voice it instantly takes me back to being 8 listening to my grandpa telling his stories over dinner time drinking this soup ❤️ Tastes of home. My mum made this every week and i would eat this with some fresh white rice and lots of the soup.
My dad hasnt been to his hometown in China for 50 years but with the dishes I follow from this channel he is reminded of his hometown and his childhood. This soup is one of them. Thank you. Please continue making these videos! Xie xie ni!
I made this except I added 1 1/2 tbsp of Shaoxing wine and 1/3rd tsp of white pepper during the sauteeing, I subbed the portobellos for a few dried shiitakes and their soaking water, and added some chopped enoki mushrooms and spinach at the end and LEMME TELL YA, it was the best thing I've eaten lately. The Chinese soup game is absolute bananas. This reminded me exactly of the soup I always used to get at this little gem of a vegetarian Chinese place years ago; super nostalgic.
I so enjoy how your dad’s cooking brings the whole family together…a tradition I hope many Chinese Americans will sustain for generations to come. Your mom and dad are just such lovely people sharing their cooking knowledge and traditions with the world. The best food channel ever! Keep up the good work!
I made this last night and my wife and I both loved it. It's velvety and a bit sweet, with strong tomato flavor. I've also made the ginger rice with chicken and the pan-fried salmon, and all three recipes were huge hits in our house. I will definitely make all three again! Thanks for sharing these wonderful recipes and your family's warmth and fun.
This is my childhood soup!! I remember my grandma made it for me very often. Now she is too old to cook now so I will try to cook this tomato soup for her!
Thank you SO MUCH Lau Family for teaching us and sharing your lovely family! I found your channel trying to learn how to cook my (Northern Chinese) husband’s favorite dishes. The relationship between Daddy Lau and Hong Doy makes me miss my late dear grandpa so much !
Made this for dinner last night. Delicious! Thank you for your wonderful recipes. One thing I did differently was to sauté the ginger, etc. in the soup pot before adding the soup. No need to use two pots.
Today my wife and I prepared Dad's HEAVENLY Tomato Tofu Soup and it was delicious. The recipe says it serves five; however, the two of us pretty much finished it off in one setting. We did make a couple of changes; first, we did not add any tomato ketchup and second, since we did not have any fresh mushrooms on hand, we used dried mushrooms. We will probably continue with this modification. I did put a wee bit of fish sauce into my bowl (my wife does not like fish sauce) and the addition was very good, at least to me. I have saved this recipe onto my personal Big Oven account and will be making it again. I have one PS; I will probable peel the three tomatoes next time.
my dad (who also worked BOH in a chinese restaurant) always used to say chinese tomato dishes were better homemade than in restaurants because restaurants never have time to peel the tomato’s. peeling is just one of those caring home touches
Thank you. Such an easy and delicious recipe to follow. Also very healthy. I’m from India. And I enjoy your fathers cooking. He’s a super chef. Thank you
We love cooking along with Lau! This soup is so flavorful! Thank you so much for teaching us how to make your wonderful recipes. I especially love the time around the table, hearing of the stories and information you all share. I have made so many of your recipes. Each one is superb! I have to leave out animal products and salt and oil due to health issues, but still very delicious! Thank you so very much!
I've made this yet again but added a bit of sautéed onion, mushrooms, left-over cooked chicken and fine pasta because I wanted an easy (umm, lazy) all-in-one-pot meal - and it was SO good. Daddy Lau's original version is really delicious and so quick, healthy and frankly, absolutely perfect as it is, but, in the same vein of 'give a man a fish vs teach a man how to fish' this recipe and variations of it is one that I will be making for a long long time! Please pass on my heartfelt thanks to Daddy Lau!
Thank you very much to your family and you for sharing this dish. I’m very impressed by your dad’s cooking and I enjoyed making and eating this dish ☺️
I love tomatoe tofu soup! It's one of my favorites too & I love it as a noodle soup ❤️ I was so happy when I saw this video. Can't wait to make it & try. Thank you for the video Lau fam! Also, would also love to see videos on how to make Chinese soups 😋
I wanted to make this tomato soup but didn’t have any mushrooms or tofu so I kind of combined it with your bok choy soup, without the pork. I also added some Chinese cabbage that I had on hand, put in a splash of soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar and white pepper. It’s a good thing it turned out good because I’ve got a huge pot of it and I live alone.
Just tried this recipe and while cooking with ketchup terrifies me, I was surprised by how savory and delicious this was! I added a little garlic (bc I love it in everything) but I think it would have been great even without it. Thank you for continuing to share your family and content!
I've been looking for easy to cook recipes to save time. My parents are busy because of work so I'm the one who cooks for dinner after my classes. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I will try this tomorrow.
I’ve made this twice now and my parents love it! I also shared the recipe with my sister and she made it immediately! Thank you for this recipe and the explanations are so helpful-especially the part about the tip for the egg drop consistency!
Was the best soup I ever made tonight for my family dinner..thanks so much Dad Lau...Have great happy new year and always good health with whole family
super love this chaneellll !! cooked my first chinese soup (this recipe), truly such a joy to see my husband & son ate it... eventhough im a beginner cook lol. often failed in cooking but bcoz of the super detailed instruction -- i was able to do it successfully in one go !! hyped to learn the other recipes. thank u thank uuu Daddy Lau & Randy !!
I've grown up with 咸菜番茄豆腐汤 that is made with preserved mustard greens (aka salted vegetables), tomatoes, and tofu. The base is usually made with pork meat or bones. It's one of my fav soups, second to (savoury) apple soup :)
Will the soup become too tangy from both the tomatoes and salted vegetables? I usually eat the pork ribs soup with salted vegetables, but never try to add tomatoes...
Tomato is packed with glutamate, which is a natural Umami/savory bomb when cooked and added with salts. If you look closely, Daddy Lau never mentioned adding Chicken Bouillon Powder in this dish. It is because tomato supplied all the nice umami you'll need, and there is no need for the extra sodium glutamate from the Chicken Bouillon Powder. Plus, they used chicken stock so there is no need for the Chicken Bouillon Powder to provide chicken flavor.
I learned Chinese for five years and even lived in China for a year. It is so enjoyable to hear your dad talk! And the recipes are prolifically well done. Especially this recipe, I enjoyed a lot. Thank you very much
My dad stopped making this at home because the sugar and corn starch spiked his blood sugar too much (type 2 diabetes) but seeing this sure brings back memories!
I just watch your food recipes today, and i follow your recipe step by step. It is so flavourful. I just add 4extra chilies and 1carrot and i just use normal water only. But as your father said, anything can add inside.
Hey yo! Maybe next up Daddy Lau can make classic Cantonese desserts like 豆腐花 or 双皮奶!😋 Thanks for being the source of inspiration whenever I don't know what to make for dinner, its such an enjoyment to watch Daddy Lau in action 🥰
Your Dad remind me of Mom's village and her cooking is very much same style like HOME. Excellent nutritional soup and fast to cook. Very good channel! Good job!👍👏
I am going to make it this for lunch since I have all the ingredients. I have watching your cooking show. Simple and easy to follow. Thank you to the Lau’s.
I made the soup today following your dad’s family. It’s awesomely tasteful. Ingredients are easy to get in USA, I got tofu delivered by weee. I added some chilli Sesame oil and white pepper, feel like a hot and sour soup. I am a foodie and enjoy cooking, but this recipe is simple and delightfully warm up a chilly day. Thanks for sharing.
Used to make this at an early age. Once in awhile make them now with my kids but they don't really like tomatoes, so regular egg flower soup. However I love the tomatoes egg soup, I add different ingredients but it always a dish I love making for me and my wife. Thank you for the memories.
Tip! For people who cant or dont eat egg , Definately use silken/silkiest tofu as an egg subsitute! (it ends up looking similar since it falls apart easily!), then you can fill out with firmer tofu for bulk!

What’d you think of Daddy Lau’s recipe?
One question, why do Cantonese food are mostly starchy? Unlike its neighbour like Hainanese or Fujian food? Is it because of British influence?
Looks delicious! My mom would add dried seaweed in for added umami
Hi! May I ask, what type of fresh mushroom did your dad use? 🥰
hello can you substitute the chicken broth for chicken stock?
Seriously one of the best cooking channels I’ve ever come across. Watching your videos make me feel like I’m a part of your family.
And you learn so much, too. Not just chinese words, or little cultural tidbits, but also incredibly valuable cooking tips that can be applied to whatever you're cooking!! A++ channel right here.
I feel just the same. Best from Brazil.
Totally agree
Same here.
I agreed. Reminds of my home cooking .
When I hear your dads voice it instantly takes me back to being 8 listening to my grandpa telling his stories over dinner time drinking this soup ❤️ Tastes of home. My mum made this every week and i would eat this with some fresh white rice and lots of the soup.
The best part of the video is to see a family of 3 generations so easily chat away and sharing nice food and tips. The rest of the video is great too.
I just enjoy watching your family interact with one another. There's so much affection, kindness and respect!

His recipe has a lot of sugar actually. When I make it I don’t add much sugar or ketchup
@@sevenw7150 I used only half a teaspoon for sugar. I like savory more. 😬
This is my childhood soup!! I remember my grandma made it for me very often. Now she is too old to cook now so I will try to cook this tomato soup for her!
