  • Found Over 250 Illegal Crab Traps! (Vancouver, BC)
    While exploring the coastline off a local Vancouver beach, I stumbled upon a submerged crab trap that was connected to multiple others. after hearing about the poaching operations in Boundary Bay, British Columbia I immediately knew what I was looking at. I contacted the DFO and this is what they discovered...

    Saw this on CBC Chris. Good work brother. Also, I got my t's in the mail a day or two ago. Already getting some positive interest in Vic and Port Renfrew. Also, getting a boat soon, so when you get out my way,we should for sure meet up and we can cruise, snorkel, or hunt. If nothing else, hanging out at the RFCA behind my pad is a good time.
    Take care brother, and again, great work on the traps.

      Sounds amazing man and count me in. Thanks for the support! I'll be living in Nanaimo by the end of July and plan to make many trips that way. Let's keep in touch!

    I happened to be listening to a BC radio station last week down here in the San Juan Islands and heard your news story. So cool, nice work!

      Oh crazy! I often listen to a few stations out of Washington haha. That's cool that you guys heard that. It's great that it got so much attention and spread some awareness. I'm sure the same problem is on your side on the boarder too. 😟

    Awesome work! A retired BC search and rescue guy saw my dive buddy and I heading into the ocean and started chatting with us, he mentioned seeing this story on CBC and was super stoked about it. He estimates there are over 10,000 illegal traps in Boundary Bay alone. It's very sad.
    Glad I know what to look for now and how to report it! Thanks for making your videos fun and educational.

      Thanks man. That's sickening. 250 is a very small drop in the bucket. At least we can all collectively keep an eye out and be a little more vigilant. Whether it's one trap or 1000 it all makes a difference! Cheers.

    Congrats Chris, saw the CBC article, Proud to know a few people like you! Unfortunately poachers & poaching is rampant out here, it's disgusting how many really. I stand with you on this! Ooh Rah. Make sure you pass this along to your friends as well, you and them all deserve our thanks. Mike

      Cheers man. It's the least we can do. I'm happy it got some media attention to get the word out. It happens 24/7. Our oceans have enough problems already, we don't need people bending/breaking the rules. Our future ability to harvest depends on it. Thanks man!

    Proud to know there are people some honest people out there just doing good because that's what they believe in. I recently stumbled upon your channel doing some research into the sport. My girlfriend used to live in Burnaby (when we were doing long-distance) and I fell in love with the area when I first came to visit her. Would like to move out there someday soon and get into the sport. Cheers from Michigan and I hope you start seeing those big legal crabs more often.

      Haha me too man. Exploring the water while holding your breath is an amazing experience. I'm sure diving some old shipwrecks in the great lakes would be unreal. Thanks for the comment man!

    Awareness is definitely the key. Just last year I was out at Tsawwassen fishing for flounder when I snagged a blue rope under the water. I tried pulling the rest of it up by hand but it was much too heavy. There were no floats in sight and I had just assumed it was someone's lost anchor, but now after watching this video I would have definitely marked the location to report it. Good work out there! I hope if we report enough of these guys they'll be discouraged from setting the traps in the first place

    • @PNWSamson

    Another great video Chris. I didnt see the cbc coverage so thanks for sharing. Congrats you did the right thing man, its a renewable resource with lots for everyone, if...everyone plays by the proper rules. I hope they get caught and fined, its the same as stealing, what aholes...

    Great work Chris! Mass harvesting on that scale is so short-sighted and just depletes the ocean.

    I saw this on CBC yesterday morning, then saw your video posted - this is really important to stop, it affects us all. If we're all fair and approach fishing in the same way, we can keep doing it. If not, well...

    Are you sure you are allowed to harvest crab in 28-8? I have always considered it off limits as it's a permanent closure:
    28-8,28-10 Reminder Closed to harvesting of all crab species per navigational closures in sub-areas 28-8 (False Creek) and 28-10 (Burrard Inlet, partial)
    Does hand picking some how get around the closure because it doesn't effect navigation?

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, good question. Burrard inlet is a partial closure, 28-10. I dove around Stanly park once and had to inform the Canadian Coast Guard before and Port authority before hand. The issue is that people leave lines and buoys in shipping lanes which causes navigation hazards. Some areas don't even permit kayaking or paddleboarding. This beach is a pretty popular swimming spot and well away from shipping lanes plus we were hand harvesting. I guess a little bit of a grey area... The DFO knows where I was and didn't say anything so 🤔. Thanks for bringing that up though!

    20$ says they were Asian every time you see this shit it’s an Asian 🤷🏻

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not always. The most notorious poacher from Canada is a white male. I've stopped diving with some people who can't follow the regs and they were white. Some of the most environmentally conscious people I dive with are of Asian descent. With that said, the illegal crabs often get shipped overseas to Asia and I do agree that many break the rules and claim "we couldn't read the regs" as an excuse. I don't like to point fingers and one specific race or culture though it's a humankind issue not a race issue. www.google.ca/amp/s/www.macleans.ca/longforms/the-hunt-for-b-c-s-most-notorious-fisherman/amp/
