My husband and i been watching you throughout the years and enjoy all your videos. Your real and honest about how it is out there. Since my husband retired both of us have seen the changes in the past seven years. We just recently returned from a trip and could not believe the lakes drying up and alot of the campgrounds closed. Traveling is stressful now to us and it seems we find ourselves driving all around trying to find a safe place to sleep and it's almost not even worth traveling anymore. Oh and there is way too many people out doing the same thing living in their RV, vans, and cars. I'm glad we didn't give up our home. Look forward to your next videos.

Thank you both so much for watching. And yeah, I'm thinking lately that selling the house to go full time may not be the best considering the uncertain future of our country and the climate.

I was supposed to be in New Mexico for my neice. I had my Grand Caravan ready to go in January then the weather got crazy. However, now the uncertainty of the country has kept me in my Native Florida. I am renting a room from a friend.
I have property that is foreboding. My only choice is to go back there and start from scratch.
I have only prayer for all of you that are traveling.

Great Video, Carolyn! Very informative. We like traveling in our RV but found some land in SouthEastern Ohio where we can have continued access to on grid and off grid Water, on grid Electric, and free gas at our “farm”. The prospects of $10/gallon gasoline plus unavailable water make it worth looking for property far enough East to miss most of the Tornadoes, far enough South and West to miss the Lake effect snow, far enough West to miss the hurricanes and able to stay at our farm for extended periods of time as we wait for energy prices to go down.
In the meantime, we are doing the Ruth Stout method of Grass Fed Gardening making our farm into a continuing supply of food for us and for nearby food pantries.
Rock on and we will continue living vicariously through your videos.
Ever in Ohio, look us up.
    Roy

Yes AbSOlutely Carolyn ! In NM yes the winds are high and constant like a storm. My water is lower than it has ever been and I purchased a large amount for safety. I have more people interested than ever in parking on private property. Yes NM Forest closures through Dec 2022. Nomads are going to have to go to private lands or buy a piece. That is one of three things I learned when I lived in an RV in the 80's #1 priority was to get myself a piece of dirt.

I love watching you. Can relate! I traded my big van for a Subaru for AWD and wanted more nimbleness and less gas consumption in these times. I did not want to rebuild it, as I'm used to tenting and making coffee in the rain, though ugh.. The weather has been a good reason to at least have a vehicle to sleep in; I can in the Subaru. Another thing is the sheer volume of people has made many favorite places offlimits, as I need solitude. In the tent I am more vulnerable, to noise or god forbid an attacking entity, animal or asshole, lol. I carry my water in a Coleman jug, as I havefound the light blue ones break and that could be disastrous. But remember I mentioned nimbleness: they are easy to fill at grocery stores selling filtered water. I do a sponge bath, as I am old so don't need a full on shower every day. But I do like a place with showers, so long as they don't have air fresheners poisoning the air. In essence, the weather has not yet been a problem for me as much as the crowded places. And the climate issues and fires have displaced people and that's why so many are on the road. I have a sticks-and-bricks so may do less camping until fall.

I live in Otero County New Mexico and 10 minutes away from Lincoln National Forest! The first fire we in New Mexico had was the area where I live! It was Not started by humans, it was high winds breaking tall pines and this one hit a electric line causing sparks which started the fire! Up north it was started from forestry service personnel doing controlled burns in dry windy conditions! They know better than to do them this time of year, but we're told by higher ups it was ok! So now here we sit with our beautiful forests burning to the ground! It is very ssd indeed!

  • @jmwilson3787

Forest fires were inevitably. We spent years traveling, boon docking, and camping. We were always very cautious going into National Forest, Pine Bark Beetles have been killing the trees for years and every year there have been more dead trees, so many in fact that we very seldom stayed in a National Forest for fear of a fire. At this time we’re trying to figure out where we’re going to go, had plans on going to NF around Chama, NM, but with the fires, have changed out minds. Goog luck.

I'm full time and you've been one of my mentors for years. Thank you! You validated my experience with weather this year. I always scoffed that I could just drive away from bad weather, but most of it is too sudden. Tornado touchdowns within a mile that weren't predicted. Softball size hail, not forecasted. Straight line winds and heat domes (which I had ever heard of before). Wildfire smoke that suddenly changes direction. I've dealt with all of that and more. I'm in a true 4 season camper van, so the sudden deep freezes and foot of snow were okay. Not so for most RVers. About the only thing you can reliably avoid is a hurricane. Not to mention gas prices over $5/gal up here in Washington state, where I spend the summers. I get 17 MPG. Typical RVs burn through fuel like fighter jets. All things to consider!

I’ve camped since childhood. Hiked portions of the AT, slept in a sleeping bag under the trees, tent camped when I was 7 months pregnant, slept on a mountain top while a bear circled my tent, tent-camped through US and Canada. All of this was adventure. The way climate and society are now, I’m concerned about my safety in an RV with a dog.

I'd say come East Young lady but things are changing here in the SouthEast too. Fewer drops below freezing over Winter in South GA, we used to wrap pipes in November to prepare and now you wait until you get that hard freeze warning. I haven't left my faucets dripping in 2 years now. You have to prepare for year round thunderstorms with tornadoes and power outages. It's crazy having tornadoes in January, used to be you didn't worry until April. Already in the mid 90's here, can't imagine what July and August are going to be like.
I remember a movie from when I was young about a dystopia future where everyone was migrating North due to the sweltering heat in the Deep South and thought at the time how horrible that would be. I'm now planning that move, my cousin and I are looking for land in our travels. I've been researching the safest areas of the country to live based on weather rather than crime rates now. Something to think about. We may be living in a holler in Appalachia in the future, was thinking Arkansas but may be too close to those fires in 20 years.
You and Sadie stay safe, head north and maybe East to stay ahead of the fires. But you don't need my advice on that 😘
Hugs and prayers from me & Neri.

The other problem we were seeing which you did not mention is the increasing numbers of closures due to trash being left by inconsiderate and un caring people.

Closing off public land last year, in WA state, sure helped the fire situation. We had ungodly high temperatures (record setting) but fewer fires than 2020. No people on public land equals fewer fires on public land.
This year, the spring has been much cooler and wetter. But I notice the rest of the USA is suffering or about to.

As always, you are one of the greatest.
    Always insightful information.
    And on the spot helpful.
Yes,being on the road is getting harder, and much, much, more expensive, starting with fuel.
Then if you can't camp out,and the often no camping rules, you see more and more, make motels if no choice, the only option, they too are becoming ridiculous in pricing.
And post pandemic, costs for everything,on the road eating as well, has skyrocketed.
RV life,as you brought up,is in many ways dependant and worthwhile, based on camping for the most part in the west.
And when that becomes harder or in some areas impossible, living on the road, will become almost impossible in response.
You just need to plan much better and hope things get better.
Hopefully, you will still be here,on your show, giving great insight and advice from your vast experiences, for a long long time.
    Again,thank you,for all you do.

    Thanks, Carolyn, for the heads-up.
Also, those of us on a budget are being priced out - fuel costs, etc.
I think it's not accidental - the shortages, the wildfires, the weather, -
I believe it's the end of the American lifestyle, and it's not accidental.

No, I don't have time to go back and re-research to explain in understandable terms to you.
Which specific issue do you wish to have explained?
Do you believe the "shortages" resulting in scarcity and price explosions are incidental and unintentional?
Do you believe in "wildfires" that burn one side of a residential street and leave the other side untouched? that melt everything metal? or trees that burst into flame from the inside out?

It is changing to finding land that allows RV and/or mini houses, at least for six months, if there is any land left. I bought mine in 2020 but I still need to do some work for living there or should I say more money (marking, leveling, mini house, water tank and septic tank) to get it there. I totally agree with what you are saying.

and yet, now in Seattle area, we've gotten so much rain, it's just stupid, did not have an over 60 degree day for months, just recently got to 68 degrees and some sun, but I heard some thunder today again, even though it was a bright, sunny day...

I do not think you are overreacting! Weather & climate change is truly threatening nomads. And since covid I find that there are fewer resources all around- closed services, less welcoming locals, poor road maintenance, closed parks & water stations, riding prices for EVERYTHING! Boondocking with an RV is rapidly shutting down. All nomads need to learn about weather & start looking at forecasts like they look for places to get gas or sleep. Know how weather works!! You are spot on Carolyn!

I've been out here for a year... really need to update my old photo on here! Currently I am summering in Ohio- more stationary due to gas prices. Doing two months as a camp host at a state park; visiting some Thousand Trails parks here and there. Long term? I am flexible. I don't know what the future holds... I always said this is an open ended vacay and when I feel done I will be done. Wherever I go I have it in mind: what would it be like to live here?
What are YOU doing to prepare for the changing times/ weather/ high fuel rates, etc?

  • @DebReed54

On the NM state park website, I counted 6 out of 35 NM state parks closed due to fire danger and 4 closed due to low water. There will be more fires in the future and the water tables have steadily been dropping. I don’t believe this is the end of van life, but it is something we are all dealing with. At least in a van or motor home you can drive your home out of danger.

Carolyn dear.....I so very much enjoy your videos! 😀 We live in unprecedented times.....as a longhaul truck driver, there is a lot of changes throughout the country that I witness that many don't see. You are among a very few rv dwellers that I choose to follow on TH-cam. I have found you to be genuine and honest and that is paramount to me! You take care of yourself and your sidekick pooch....OK? Things are tough, but one person I trust to still be standing at the end......is YOU!!! Hugs! 😀

I live on top of a mountain in the foothills of the Adirondacks. It’s supposed to be 95 here tomorrow. That’s insane for mid-May. We’ve probably lost 10-15 trees over the past 3 years. Last year, we had an invasion of gypsy moth caterpillars. They stripped almost every tree in our yard.
