The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I remember watching Ed Sullivan Show religiously. It was one of my favorites. I was 14 when this showed December 1966. Awesome time to grow up.

If Gary's career would be represented in a career timeline, you would see a line drawn immediately after this performance, which was the end of his greatest success. 10 straight recordings all reaching the top 21 of the Billboard Hot 100. Ending with what I think is one of his very best singles, with lyrics that would ironically spell his fate, "Where will the words come from when I tell you I don't want you anymore".
He was drafted into the completely unnecessary Vietnam War. He returned home in 1969 an addict. That's what our military does to people.

The great Carl Radle on bass. Yeah, that Carl, of Leon Russell, Delaney and Bonnie, Derek and the Dominoes and Eric Clapton fame.
Days after this appearance, Gary entered into the Armed Forces for two years.

@@jody8526937 And, neither he nor the Playboys played on the records. It was the famous Wrecking Crew, a group of talented L.A. session musicians who played on, practically, everything. The records sounded so good because of the production genius that was Snuff Garrett.
@@jrdlabs I'm aware most "LA" groups didn't play the studio versions of the songs however Gary and The Playboy's were a good live act. I have seen live performances of the band and they are very entertaining.
@@jody8526937 Yes, I've seen them quite a few times, as well. They had a lot of hits and those songs are darn catchy. It IS entertaining and Gary is a good frontman.

Gary Lewis - lead vocals (son of Jerry Lewis)
Tom Tripplehorn - guitar (father of Jeanne Tripplehorn) (died 2019)
Carl Radle - bass (played in Derek and the Dominoes) (died 1980)
John West - Hammond Organ
Jim Karstein - drums (died 2022)

Yep my all-time favorite group as well even though like some of the previous comments have indicated their music was primarily played by The Wrecking Crew but so were most of the other groups’ music from that period.
My 1st concert was these great guys. Remember it to this day. So wonderful. Thanks guys

One of my favorite bands! Thank you for posting this great medley! An edited version is shown in a "Best of Sullivan" program featuring only two of the songs, so it's great to see the entire medley for the first time! The songs featured are "This Diamond Ring" (number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100), "Green Grass" (number 8), "She's Just My Style" (number 3) and "Where Will the Words Come From" (number 21). The last song was Gary's current single. This was Gary's last appearance on the Sullivan show before joining the army. This was the same one on which he sang a bit of "One Last Kiss" after the medley, posted earlier. He made one more appearance after he re-joined civilian life singing "Main Street" which has also been posted. The only performance left to be posted is "She's Just My Style" from a Sullivan show earlier in 1966.

Gary Lewis named "Top Male Singer Of 1966" on Billboard Magazine. Lewis was also on Scepter Records with the song "Then Again Maybe" as a solo artist & his last swan song peaking at # 135 (Record World) & # 110 (Cashbox) in September of 1972. Did Gary Lewis met Gary Puckett??

Gary served in the Vietnaum war starting in 1967 so perhaps the Bye Bye Gary refers to this.
You are probably right. This appearance on the Sullivan show was made on December 4, 1966 and he entered the Army in January 1967.
He was in South Korea until a year later when he came back.

I liked Gary’s singing with the music created by the famed “Wrecking Crew”…😊! Shame his career was ruined by our 3rd foray into Southeast Asia.

@@recordguy4321 An impressive list of hits indeed. The Dixie Cups also reached no. 1 with 'Chapel Of Love' (1964), so did The Shangri-Las ('Leader Of The Pack', 1964) and The Temptations ('My Girl', 1965, their first single with David Ruffin singing lead).

They do play on the records, there is proof out there
Most, if not all, you hear on their recordings was supplied by "The Wrecking Crew", probably with Glen Campbell on lead guitar, Hal Blaine on drums.

Gary Lewis in many ways was a self-made man as his famous father was more of a hinderance to his career than a help. His mother helped finance the band but other than Jerry Lewis helping Gary get some TV appearances, he either did nothing or belittled him.
Bass player Carl Radle went on to (in my opinion) much greater things including stuff with Leon Russell and Joe Cocker (Mad Dogs & Englishmen) but especially with Eric Clapton (Derek and The Dominoes).
I saw him with derek and the dominos. he was fantastic as well as Dominos drummer the late Jim Gordon .Carl died from years of substance abuse He played with Leon Russell since the early 60's and it was leon who encouraged all these guys from Tulsa like Carl drummer Jim Karstein, and guitarist Tommy Tripplehorn (Jeannie's dad) to move to L. A. Organist and cordovox player Jon West was already there.

It’s so sad that his musicianship had to be hidden from his father until it was proven successful. His mother Jeanne financed his studio time and equipment under the promise that Jerry would not know.
I thought that Jerry pulled strings to get Gary a recording contract with Liberty Records and ensured he had the most seasoned people behind him like Snuff Garrett. Patty was Gary's mother. Jeanne was married to Dean.
