      Absolutely not that heavy pal, EMCs crazy quads that he made weighed like 90 something, bass drums are lighter than quads normally, that's like ~40-50lbs I'm guessing

    UPDATE: Found the videos, linked in the replies
    If you can find it, Spirit 1988 had toms mounted on top of the top couple of basses. Also, 1996 Glassmen had a bass feature in the beginning of the show on micro basses, doing the piccolo part of 'Stars and Stripes Forever'.
    And that 1993 Bushwackers solo was the balls.

    I was the caption head for Woodward High school (Alums include Danny Thomas and Jamie Farr from M*A*S*H),from 2006 to 2019. We had a small line and only 1 Bass drummer. I remembered the 1988 Glassmen had a guy march two basses, so since the center of the football team, was also our bass drummer, I decided two floor toms could be attached to the bass drum. Well both myself and the bass drummer decided to kick it up a few notches and added two mounted set toms. The result was sheer shock and terror in other lines faces, when we showed up for drum offs. Remained undefeated all years. Still very proud of those lines and years.Aged out with the Glassmen and was on staff for three years.

      When I marched Magic of Orlando in the 90's some of the guys in this video were our brass and percussion staff. The snare player on the right (John Campese) wrote most of our percussion shows and the Contra player kneeling in front of the camera (Mike Roylance) was our contra tech and now he plays with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The group was mostly Suncoast Sound alumns who went professional and booked the ensemble to play a few shows/day at the Disney parks. Total badasses! And as kind of a 2nd generation, half the jammitors are Magic alumni

    @ 3:05 - Eric, the first time I saw stacked basses was Super Corps at Epcot in March of 1983. (The park was only six months old and still had large, uncompleted "worlds" at the time.) They used a snare, a quad, a triple bass, and a percussion cymbal/toy guy. Interestingly, they also had a small guard, too. I think they dumped the guard that same year. Cheapskates! I have photos, but I have no scanner. If I ever get one I will upload them and send them to you.

    A year after the Cavs used the double-stack Rhode Island Matadors (DCA) used it after their second bass drummer broke his ankle. Bass drummer #1 stacked bass drums 1 and 2 and put a plastic kids periscope on it which I think was half functional and half just as a joke. As I watched this video it made me think, "Why didn't we think of creating a space for the guy to see through? Once again, a very cool video, Eric! I have no idea why there are any thumbs down on this video.

  • @tiger4au75

    Dude! I'm so glad to see someone finally show this!!! I marched the 3 stack in high school for three years. I had to train with the football team in the summer to build up muscle for the marching band season. It weighed 58 pounds but it was so tall it was easy to put down on the ground between rehearsal however, I frowned on this and by my senior year, I was able to march the entire show going to the field and back without putting the drum down. I marched a single bass in college and they of course put me on the big one so it was different not having control of the entire bass section, but it was a pretty smooth transition all things considered. The hardest part was reaching the bottom drum as it stuck out from the bottom. I tried making some custom mallets that were longer but they kept breaking. My senior year premark sent me a prototype of their aluminum mallets and they did help as they were longer, but the best part was they never broke. My band director was a big FSU fan and had us play the war chant a lot, so in the stands I brought out an extra large bass drum to fit in the stands that I could play with or along with the triple bass that I mounted on the stadium rails in front of me. I'll be happy to send some video links if you like. Thanks for your support of the greatest instrument on earth.

    Instead of stacked bass drummers, I'd just make the bass drums a part of the pit, turn them almost flat, and let 1 or 2 kids with a good sense of rhythm play all of them. They'd usually have fun doing that and it would makes them feel like they are the star of the show!

    • @jthomas.
      @jthomas. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We did pretty much that my freshman year. Was a brand new high school and was A60 class so the director didn't want a full battery section on the field. We just put all the drums in the pit. One guy played four basses set up like a giant set of tenors (it was awesome), iirc we had 2 snares, 1 tenor, and a kit player as well. Despite not having a proper drum line, we still took home a couple of percussion caption trophies that year.

    • @joew717
      @joew717 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Future corps eventually went in that direction as well and put the basses on a horizontal rack like tympanis because the guy wasn't 19 anymore and it's tough on your back doing that for 6 shows/day!

    Not stacked, but my alma mater (Jacksonville State University) marched 9 tonal bass drums.. Including a drum large enough that we had a window put on the front and back of the drum so that the drummer could see where he was going.. not sure how many corp style drumlines have done that. I believe we did it for 4 years; '95, '96, '97, and 2000 - I was privileged to march "5 of 9" in the bass line of 2000, my freshman year.. used to joke that I was "center bass" lol

    Green Army Men was a Toy Story overlay that the Magic Kingdom Korps did for a while at Disneyland. They weren't around as long as Future Corps at EPCOT. Both groups however would do multiple shows per day, at least 5 days out of the week. When Future Corps started, the basses weren't stacked. They were set up like over-sized tri-toms. Not sure when they switched. I've only seen one video of them in that config so it probably wasn't long. Some time in the mid 1990's, the group switched the drum line over to rolling racks of drums. The snare and tom players had extra drums and mounted cymbals. The bass drummer had a rack of 6 bass drums (sometimes only 5). I didn't care for the rack set up. The bass drums didn't project as well in that configuration.

    Sprit of Atlanta had toms stacked on their basses in 1989. That was the year they has like 20 bass drums or something.

    There's a drum company in Tennessee that produces the configuration for the
    stacked basses. Forgot the name? Sorry. Will try and find.

      I was just looking that up. I need to do this for the tiny line I’m working with. I’ve done it before, with the great help of my father in law, but in need to do it again without drilling.

    I played Base Freshman year in Highschool. There is now way I would have marched a double base in a New Orleans Mardi Gras Parade. We marched one that was 12 miles, from 10 am until 6 at night. No Way! Side note, my brother was the cymbal player who jumped over the the other guy in Blast.

    Love the inclusion of Blast! on your list. I think a better representation of their use of stacked bass drums takes place in Medea as opposed to Battery Battle. Def took me many years and a good pair of headphones to hear but there are indeed some good clean runs played.
