When I cut my husband's hair, mow my lawn, hand wash my car, etc. I put the amount of money it would have cost to do those things in my savings account. It's not savings unless you actually save it :)

I have been doing this same thing for a while. But lately I have been feeling guilty saying this to friends that want to go out to do something fun. Since I know I really do have some money in the bank but I don’t want to spend extra money every week.
@@brokebudget4037 "Sorry, it's not in my budget" is just as effective, and perfectly honest. (As long as you are actually budgeting the amount you are comfortable spending on gathering with friends.)
My friends know I do have money, so I just don't spend like crazy when we do hang out. A couple of beers at the bar? No problem. I go shopping with friends? I don't buy anything. I watch them spend.
@@brokebudget4037 This is going to sound ridiculous but my niece is in her late 20's. Love my capsule wardrobe. I’ve been doing it for 4 years and people always compliment my outfits and make comments like, “You must have a closet full of cute clothes.” Girl... I have had 3-4 pairs of pants max in my closet during this time. And my kids love the library. We get free audio books through them too. ❤️
I love having a separate account at different banks for spending and other sinking funds. It makes life so much easier for me and I'm not overspending.
I love this! Skip the holidays - mostly gift giving! There are SO many ideas to make it enjoyable. I don’t need another low budget item, in fact - I am picky and I hate clutter. I would MUCH rather be invited to a hot cocoa or cookie exchange party, an Xmas light walk, a pasta dinner where I can bring the host a bottle of wine to share, an Xmas movie marathon with holiday goodies - I could go on and on. If it’s someone close like my sister, a heartfelt card would make me more happy than anything anyone could ever get me. I have to say that Pinterest is somewhat harmful for me - I start looking at things I don’t have. Cleaning/organizing with intent is a better choice for me - I never fail to feel more appreciative for what I have 💗
Yes having separate accounts works. I use a cash envelope for my groceries. When that runs out no more grocery spending for the month. It's so easy to overspend on groceries using your debit card but that cash disciplines you.
I love have separate bank accounts for bills, spending, etc. My friend told me about this tip a few years ago and it’s been a true game changer in my finances.
In addition to unfollowing certain influencers, I’ll follow influencers that exhibit behaviors that I want to emulate. I’ve unfollowed all makeup and fashion channels that post frequent hauls, and followed influencers that use creativity to love what they own. This gets me out of a scarcity mindset and into an inspired one.
Love this idea of sharing tips from different people - we all have different circumstances so different pieces of advice can be more or less helpful depending on those circumstances, I will definitely be trying out some of these tips!!
I have weekly budget for groceries and everytime I buy something I write it down on a little notepad. I add it all up and if I go over I subtract it from the next week. If I stay under I might add it to next week or transfer it to my savings.
I've started writing down an estimate of what I expect to pay next to each item on my list, along with a total of what I expect to pay for everything. I try to beat the price if I can every time - it keeps me on point budget-wise. Any time I come in under budget I put the extra away for when we have to restock items we buy in bulk, which require a larger outlay of funds but which will last longer and tend to be less expensive per pound (rice, beans, oatmeal, etc). Also, I'm starting to look harder at convenience foods - instead of buying some boxes of cake mix, I got some quart sized jars and made my own using flour, sugar, salt and baking powder (which I already had on hand). It cost me about 70 cents apiece compared to around 2 dollars per box at the store. When buying on Amazon, I can usually get a few dollars off by purchasing something used or from the Amazon Warehouse. So far I have gotten items that are perfectly serviceable with minimal to no wear at all. The most recent was a Lodge cast iron skillet with a single scratch on the side and a tiny knick on the edge. Neither matters at all to the function of the skillet and as it builds up layers of seasoning over time they won't even be noticed. It's good to save things from the landfill this way.
I love this week's money saving tip. It's nice to know that you have viewer with useful tips of their own who shares their knowledge so we can benefit with the information that they give.
I love the holidays, but my family and I haven’t exchanged Xmas gifts in over a decade. We just spend the time enjoying our time together. ❤ I also have used an overdraft protection option for my checking account for years. It’s cut out a lot of financial stress for me!
Very clever to show what others share! Thank you. I don't have to pretend I don't have money go spend. I really don't. Amazing how well that keeps me from spending!
I now follow only certain sites that encourage mindfulness with spending, savings, heathy eating, decluttering and budgeting effectively. Determining needs versus wants is now easy. Presently my focus is rebuilding my emergency fund and culling my clothing using the capsule wardrobe concept.
My husband and I exchange Christmas gifts between ourselves. Every year he does a major project to improve our home. We classify it as his birthday, anniversary, and Christmas gift to me. I buy him one item for Christmas. We celebrate our birthdays with free restaurant meals. I honestly don't want or anymore stuff in our house. The University I work for allows us to use its facilities for free...pool, gym, etc. as well as taking classes for free. I'll have to check if they allow students to eat their culinary goodies.
For gift giving, we are pretty simple. We don’t see our family and my husband’s family do not give gifts and don’t celebrate christmas. So we set a budget for each of our kid(100$ each), give a gift to my mom and my goddaughter. That’s it. Sometimes if we have money, we buy each other a gift. We bought gifts that are useful to the person. We ask my mom what she needs and we give it to her. I bought my husband a new bathrobe he uses everyday. He got me bath products I really use, but never buy myself for saving purpose. For kids, it’s harder since it’s mostly toys because they are little for now. Another trick I do is doing overtime to pay for the gifts and sell any kids’ toys and unessential items in my home. That way, I don’t end up with an insane amount of toys that don’t get played with. I have enough place for the new toys coming in
I don’t comment often but I just have to say thank you. I love how you keep it real. I really resonated with you. You are really helping me get myself and my husband on track. ❤️
I so agree with what you said regarding fashion hauls! They are bad for people's finances and - the environment cuz they promote unsustainable consumption! Also agree on pinterest! 👍🏼👏🏼
Thank you for these tips! 😊 I was thinking the other day about how I’m trying to keep up with TH-camrs who shop a lot, but it’s part of their job and they get sent a lot for free/get paid to advertise the items. I hadn’t even thought that they might get things on expenses too!
I do have separate spend vs billpay checking accounts and it's the best idea. I give myself $300 per paycheck for spending and transfer the rest to the bill account.
Thank You, what I do when I want to spend I go on the store web sight and put things in the box category and then put in the archives for a later date maybe in time I might buy it 😊
