    Great tips . I have a tree service that brings me wood all the time . They bring me about 100 cord a year. I also offered them a place to dump chips in which I use in my wood yard to keep the wood up out of the mud plus I use them around my property

    Great advice not just for firewood but for any business anyone is in.

    From a tree service owner. Your points are valid. The fact that you come onsite to grab the logs is a huge plus. I don’t have anyone who had that option. I do have a few customers who will take anything I will bring them. I also own and operate a firewood company as well so I do keep a lot of the wood. The biggest thing I would recommend. The minute you start saying you will take this and that and not that. Is a problem. Just saying. Conscience is key. If you will take almost everything they have to bring you will be on top of the list.

    All great points and correct!👍
    The load of logs you have could have been sold at a mill.
    One issue I have run into with two different companies over the years was. When they see you are a worker and have skills they want to 1. Hire you or 2. They start saying to be there at 10, knowing good and well the firewood won't be ready to load until 2-4 that day. They get a half days work for free and then want the same thing again the next day. Helping some is more than ok, but the line is thin between helping and being an unpaid employee 6 days a week. Plus, your own woodyard will start piling up because all your time is spent getting this "free wood."

      Yes I guess you would need to balance that but I think this goes along with a good relationship. Each of us appreciate what the other does and don’t abuse it

    Character... Although I think you definitely are one😉 you also exhibit character. And that pays dividends in any relationship. Great tips and as always, excellent delivery.

    Scratch their back and they'll scratch yours. Since I have a commercial grade splitter, was comfortable letting the tree services know that I'll taoe any sized wood, but that over a certain size I need to know in advance so can order a longer bar. After the first dump, one tree service knows where they can dump wood and are free to dump wood at my woodyard anytime. THAT really helps someone like me that's a truck driver. The biggest tree service in this area won't allow anyone that isn't an employee of theirs to show up to a job site to haul wood away. Is all about the professional image they want to project, so people will encounter that. My biggest rip is to take as much as you can from them to build inventory and a relationship with them. Once the relationship is built, then can be a bit more picky on the wood you take. My woodyard landlord is good friends with the owners of the biggest tree service in the area, so that helps. Just waiting for them to do tree jobs near my woodyard to get dumps from them. Unfortunately, many tree services chip anything 16in and under. Good thing I have a big splitter to handle the big stuff!

    Hello Brad, many great points on today’s video!
    I have a 14 year long relationship with a reputable tree service here in Colorado, it’s great when one hand washes the other.
    The relationship component you speak of we also enjoy - they come to our annual fall party, and we go to their family’s quinceaneras and weddings - it’s a beautiful thing…

    The only thing I would add is if the tree service gives you a hay or a t-shirt wear them , it's free to you and free advertising for them.

    The CDL tip is a good one. You might need one just to tow your dump trailer with your 1 ton pickup. A load of green hardwood logs quickly gets you to the 26K gross weight for truck, trailer and load.

    • @redheaded6789
      @redheaded6789 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s actually not to do with what you weigh. They go by what the truck and trailer is rated for. So no matter what your load weighs even if it’s well under 26k if the truck and trailer combined rating is for more than 26k it needs to have a cdl. That’s why so many people get dump trailers with only 10k rating plates on them. So they are legal with no cdl

      When I was on the job there was a lot of confusion on this. The highest of the three is what we went with. 1. Registration weight, MGVWR (manufacturers gross vehicle weight rating), or actual weight if loaded.

    Cherry is probably my favorite to split it smells great & burns good. That being said man some of those cherry logs you get would be great saw logs! l have noticed a few other firewood channels have saw mills too.

  • @Dorchwoods
    @Dorchwoods ปีที่แล้ว +3

    One other tip I'd add, is if you ever do get crappy gnarly logs, break them down into ugly pieces of firewood regardless and hookup friends and family. All wood burns! Even if it doesnt present well

    Great tips brad! I get loads of pine logs anytime i want from my tree service guy and its a great connection to have. I make about $650-$700 on a cord of pine here in maine, cant beat that! Campfire season baby lets gooooo 🤣

    • @Dorchwoods
      @Dorchwoods ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Handle000 no, I make 1 cubic foot mesh firewood bags and I can do 60 of them an hour with my ez bagger. Pine is the best camp firewood out. Burning hardwood in a campfire is blasphemy here in Maine, that's home heating wood! Nobody wants to sit around a scorching hot campfire on 75 degree nights, campers want a nice crackle and easy to burn, well seasoned wood. In my experience!

    • @Dorchwoods
      @Dorchwoods ปีที่แล้ว

      @S'more Firewood I'm down in OOB. I just have a roadside stand but I do about 35-40 cords of pine a year from my stand

    • @Dorchwoods
      @Dorchwoods ปีที่แล้ว

      @Handle000 nobody buys by the cord. I sell large bags of firewood at my roadside stand. I live in a very touristy area surrounded by campgrounds. I sell about 35-40 cords worth of bags at my roadside stand every summer. It was once a side hustle turned into something more 👍👍

    • @Dorchwoods
      @Dorchwoods ปีที่แล้ว

      @Handle000 also, the bags i use contain about 3x the amount of wood you'd find at a gas station, and mine is all well seasoned premium red pine. Doesnt get much better than that for campfires

    • @Dorchwoods
      @Dorchwoods ปีที่แล้ว

      @S'more Firewood yes! I'd love to meet you all! I commented on his video because his vertical log splitter is the most amazing thing I've ever seen lol. I have an eastonmade ultra if you guys ever wanna borrow it for a video or some content, I'd be happy to lend it!
      Also, I don't want to be confused with the "wood pile" here in OOB, that's a different company. He sells pine in bulk and I simply sell at my roadside stand 🤘

  • @brandonhoad9033

    Do your guys pass the savings of not having to dispose of the wood onto the customer?

    • @DanielAtkinsFirewood
      @DanielAtkinsFirewood ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good point. I would think that depends on the company tho

    • @FirewoodattheFurnace
      @FirewoodattheFurnace  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t take all of the wood from the job. They still have to haul off all the gnarly stuff and chips so that still has to be considered when bidding the job

    • @brandonhoad9033
      @brandonhoad9033 ปีที่แล้ว

    I run a hobby sawmill business. Unless there’s metal or serious defects in those Cherry, Walnut,and White Oak logs, you’re crazy to put them into firewood.

    • @FirewoodattheFurnace
      @FirewoodattheFurnace  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t have a saw mill. We take the other logs to a local mill but smaller stuff we make into firewood

    I’ve had mixed results with the tree services that I’ve dealt with in the past, mostly what they have is green and more work than worth. Maybe I’m being too picky? But I’m getting $400 per cord (not including delivery) so the quality has to be premium.
